That's great. Hopefully one day they might link up at Pickering and then it would be possible to get there from York without having to catch a bus.

Maybe but very, very unlikely that any extension south of Pickering can be even considered. Just look at Pickering itself.
Whitby should be complete by the end of July/first week of August

Rillington will only ever be pipe dream if someone donates their euromillions win and even then it's probably better spent improving the current line

Isn't that what they said about the Welsh Highland? "It'll never happen....."

I Think there are a couple of other threads on this forum about extending from Pickering towards Rillington/York. It would mean a huge road rebuilt around Pickering for a start.

It won't happen if there is road building involved but I would have liked it.

There is also the problem of joint running between Rillington Junction and Malton, unless a 3rd track is added to this stretch. The other option might be for a mainline TOC to operate to Pickering, or Whitby with running powers over NYMR, but they are presumably not keen on this as it would conflict with their heritage operation.

The countryside is very flat and so, although few earthworks would be involved, the original line had rather a lot of level crossings. Level crossings are now out of favour and so presumably overbridges or underpasses would be specified, which would be expensive.

However, there must be a great deal of suppressed demand for through journeys Leeds-York-Pickering-Whitby which is an obvious gap in the strategic network. I have always thought that this is one of 3 lines in Yorkshire which should not have been closed, the other 2 being Harrogate-Ripon-Northallerton and York-Market Weighton-Beverley(Hull). By contrast the Whitby-Middlesborough route which was kept open would seem to have very limited utility apart from the fact that any replacement bus service would be even slower and more circuitous!

To be fair, there are quite a few visitors to Whitby from Middlesborough and points North who use the line. I agree that the others shouldn't have closed though.

Yes I would agree strongly with this point. Could a heritage group ever get together to reopen a steam line to Ripon, it's a lovely town with other tourist things to do there so a steam train would compliment that?

The main problem with the train service through Ripon was that the station was a very long way from the town. It was so far away that the North Eastern Railway used to run a bus service from Ripon station to the town centre. The distance of the station from the town centre was presumably a key factor in the closure of the station.

There is a lot of useful detail about Ripon here:

http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/r/ripon/

The station was one mile north of the town on the other side of the River Ure.

The station for Witley is not next to the village but that never closed. So there must have been other factors.

Never mind heritage, the whole Leeds Northern wants putting back in. There's a serious lack of alternatives, if York is ever closed.

One problem with getting any movement going towards reinstating railways in this area is that NYCC is anti public transport. The proportion of the population dependant on cars in N.Yorks is probably higher than in any other part of England.

Examples of the consequences of their policies can be seen in:
(i) the failure to get a station reopened at Cross Hills, the largest centre of population on the electrified Aire Vally line between Keighley and Skipton.
(ii) the recent failure of Pennine Motors and their refusal to subsidise any replacement.
(iii) recent drastic reductions in the Moorsbus services.

I am sure there are other examples and I am thankful that I do not live under their administration.

So what is the new layout at Whitby? Obviously two platforms but does anyone have a diagram or similar? Also can Northern use the new platform if they wanted to or are they only able to use the original platform?

If you go to the NYMR link quoted above by Ploughman, there is a photo of the ground frame at the south end of the station complete with a diagram. As using the new platform involves unlocking the ground frame with the single line token to operate the points, I suspect the Northern services will continue to use their original platform. Unless of course their train staff are trained on the new equipment - but I can't see any reason why they would need to be.

This is an immense acheievement. Any plans to provide double track (two single lines) to Grosmont enabling full segregation for NYMR?

Hopefully Malton - Pickering is not wholly dead either.

Why on earth would you want two single lines Whitby to Grosmont anyway?

Surely if you were go to the expense of doubling the route (which is highly unlikely anyway) you'd have proper double track that would add capacity and aid reliability for both operators: Northern & NYMR.

How about they reinstall the double track on the esk valley line. It was a massive mistake to single the track. Now they have a rubbish service from Northern rail! Infact more NYMR trains go to Whitby per day now than Northern rail service trains! <D

There is no need to double the track on the EVR to have more services. Simply run more services, but would this mean more passengers?

The Glaisdale - Whitby section, at least, must be pretty 'full' nowadays, surely? I can't see much space for additional services as things stand.

Great opportunity, without adding track, would be seized by adding Grosmont as a block post. At present neither NYMR, or Northern, can enter the section Glaisdale-Whitby station curtilage unless the section is completely clear. So NYMR train enters section any Northern has to wait at Glaisdale until NYMR inside at Whitby, likewise no NYMR service can enter the section until an outbound Northern has arrived at Glaisdale and surrendered the token. If there was a Grosmont block the number of services could be increased quite substantially.
For Esk Valley services reinstating the second platform at Battersby would give another cross over opportunity, again adding service increase possibilities without any further double tracking.

I'm sure these guys know what they are doing and why, but I agree - I can't see why Grosmont wasn't made into a token block point - years ago, as soon as NYMR serves began. So doing must surely cost a fraction of the recent trackwork and yet improve the shared access beyond recognition.....

Maybe it's because a signal box would need to be staffed permanently whereas the new platform doesn't.

Saw the set up at Whitby yesterday, complete with a rake of Mk 1's and loco. Very impressed with things and the speed at which it's been brought about.
