Following the news earlier this year about funding being in place for alterations to Whitby station to add/reopen another platform and having a run round loop too, which will vastly improve the NYMR services / operations there.

Does anyone know when this work will take take place?

My understanding is that the work will start early in 2014 and be ready for the Summer service which will include more through trains to Whitby. The Feb/March timetable shows Pickering-Goathland only which presumably allows posessions at Grosmont for any necessary work there too.

156460 ready for the 12:41 to Middlesbrough at Whitby a few days ago, along with a board showing the limited current timetable.

Don't ask me why the photos are the wrong way up, they were fine when I started downloading them.

The work is due to start shortly and be complete for the timetable (as ianhr says the 'summer' one) from April. 5 trains a day into and out of Whitby, though only 4 through to Pickering.

Good news indeed. As we found out in August, when things go wrong with the Network signals and the inbound trains ends up delayed at Grosmont the built in turnaround time at Whitby is soon eroded and causes all sorts of issues not least preventing all the pax waiting from boarding while the train gets emptied propelled back the 1/2 mile to the run-around and once loco switched ends and then stock propelled back in and finally loaded, all adding considerable delays' into the departing service

Thanks for replies. I often go to Pickering for the weekend at Easter, to allow 2 or 3 days to "Play" on the NYMR , I may delay until later in the year just until we know the rebuild etc has been completed and it's all working ok.

It seems that the contingency plan if it isn't finished is to top and tail until it is - at least that's how it seems looking at their forum. There's some talk on there about it not being ready until June, but it's all a bit vague.

I guess they'll be looking to print their 2014 timetables pretty soon to get distribution well in time for Easter, so they'll have to make a firm decision if they are to avoid having to run a different (i.e. the 2013) timetable from what is printed and published.

I will have another look at their website, I could not see next summer's times teh other day, perhaps it's since been updated.

It takes about 15 min minimum to propel the train out to Bog Hall Sidings, loco run round, propel back into station....

Does anyone know how these rebuildings/renovations/improvements are going at Whitby Station which will improve services on NR & the NYMR, with adding a platform and a run around loop etc.?

According to the latest "Heritage Railway" work will now start in March & be complete by July, after which there will be 5 NYMR trains to/from Whitby per day (4 to Pickering). There is a diagram showing the new track layout. It seems Middlesborough trains will continue to use the existing platform. NYMR trains will use the 'new' (re-instated) platform, on the side nearest to the harbour, with a loco release track in the wide space between the 2 platforms.

Thank you, I will try to pick up a copy of Heritage Railway, It's interesting the way they will use the platforms, I would have thought it would have been the other way around as building a shorter platform 2 for the NR trains would have been cheaper perhaps, as platform 1 is very long and ideal for the NYMR Trains. Anyway it will be great when it's up and running. I will try to get up there in Sept or October hopefully.

Yes, would have been a better use of the platforms.

The issue would be access to Bog Hall Sidings. That's going to be switched to the new platform for NYMR and excursions.

If NYMR had continued to use platform 1 and NR platform 2 there would be crossover movements which would need major signalling? Sorry not a signals expert!!

Why would that have been a better use of platforms?
With platform 2 the NYMR can have heritage style fittings and double end exits (emergency exit to council car park) not possible on the Network Rail platform. Also platform 2 has direct access/egress from the car park face entrance, which is the side that appears to be the main entrance nowadays and has the ticket office/NYMR shop. Therefore I contend that the planned operation makes by far the best use of the platforms.

Bear in mind that Platform 2 already exists - it just has no track alongside it.
As the NYMR platform is going to have a runround loop alongside it in the space between the two platform roads (existing P1 and reinstated P2), all the pointwork for this can be laid without needing to affect the existing line right up to the stage when the reinstated platform road and runround is ready to connect to the national network.

The scheme seems to depend upon the simplicity of leaving the existing single line section (including the shut-in facility against the buffer stops) largely unchanged, with the new NYMR platform and run-round loop all accessed via a new (?) token-released ground frame off the single line, presumably arranged in such a way that all necessary shunting can be done with the train shut inside and the single line free.

Cant speak for Steve, but what I meant was it would be a better use of the platforms for NYMR to use the existing platform...they can fit 6 Mk I's in ok.

If NR used the new platform it only needs to be long enough for 2x156, which is a lot less than the platform they will have to build for NYMR.

Bottom line is a longer platform costs less than the signalling needed to do it the other way round...looking forward to seeing it all in action

It'll look brilliant once Whitby has been sorted out, as for how a run round loop could be installed, this may mean rebuilding platfrom two a bit further back than usual so that a loop can be installed with the current line on platform 1 acting as part of a loop.

Any southern extendion to the line is one that should go ahead, the problem between Pickering and Malton is that the trackbed is lost under a car park in the town so the only logical way of building this would be to start from Malton and run the line to the south of Pickering so that its only the car park knackering the job up. Once the car park has been obliterated, then the line can proceed to the current Pickering station thus reopening the ability to travel to Whiby by train from Malton.

Yes, that is what I was thinking, but after seeing the plans now in the railway magazine and reading the posts here, I can see that it does make sense what they are planning at Whitby. I just thought the large size of platform one, the length and width was ideal for NYMR services. Hopefully the new platform two won't be too cramped and narrow. Anyway, these new arrangements will be well worthwhile I hope.

Good Morning,

As it's now mid March, does anyone know if the expansion work at Whitby Station has now commenced?

Visited Whitby today. Still full after eating the biggest piece of cod ever

Anyway...the work is progressing nicely.

Track all laid, connection to Bog Hall sidings only from the new platform. Sidings looking rather overgrown due to lack of use!

Work progressing on the new platform, about half way done I'd say.

No run round available at all at the moment so NYMR workings top and tailed. Today it was a 25 on the Whitby end, B1 61034 on the Pickering end on the 1200 Pickering-Whitby, 1400 return.

Here it is leaving at Whitby....the noise was bouncing off the apartments on the other side of the estuary! Can't wait to see it all finished.

Great Film there. I was wondering how the rebuilding work was doing there. Is there any news on the date that it may be completed. I was thinking of coming up to that area either over the Aug Bank Holiday weekend, but it may be very crowded, or perhaps in early-Mid October. Hope it will be done by then, otherwise it will have to be next year.
