I had my interview over a month ago, and all I’ve heard is that the union has to give Network rail the green light to hear the outcome? Anyone have any idea on this?

Total rubbish to be blunt, there MAY be a situation where consultation is being held with the trade union to increase the number of staff in the role you’ve applied for, which is awaiting the formal agreement between NWR and union.

In no way does the trade union have any direct say in recruitment or giving out info to applicant.

So why would recruitment tell me this? Surely they would tell me if unsuccessful?

So your saying maybe they’ve advertised a job that hasn’t actually been confirmed with the union?

or perhaps the Union is deciding whether training for your role can resume so they have held off giving you the job and a start date?
I was emplyed elsewhere but have been on hold at home as I cannot train at the moment

Unlikely, the training schools are running some courses but with reduced capacity.

Potentially yes, all new roles or expansion of rosters is consulted with the union.

If it was the foundation stage recruitment team you spoke to, they’ll just be reading off a screen very similar to the one you with a few extra internal options.

Only when you get a offer, will you speak to the proper informed recruitment specialists who really know what’s going on.

That’s what it sounds like. Certainly when I was involved in recruiting staff (not for NWR admittedly), we’d not advertise the roles until all consultations were completed. Things can change very quickly in this industry and it makes no sense advertising and interviewing for a job, just to have it pulled at the last minute.

Very strange, I’ll be gutted if they say I’m unsuccessful after such a long wait

They’ve interviewed for the job, so it’s likely just a formality I’d imagine.

This is what I got

Unfortunately this role is held by our unions, so we cannot move on it until they give us the green light to continue. I’ve spoken with the hiring manager this morning and he’s confirmed he’s trying to move this along as quickly as possible, and expects an update within the next 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has prevented this moving any quicker.

What role is this for please?

It sounds like the fault, if any, is with the HR department for going ahead with recruitment for a role which has not yet been signed off and agreed. Of course they’d rather blame the union than admit they’ve dropped a clanger.

If there was a **** up, surely they would just give me the unsuccessful email?

You need to chill out fella and wait. As explained, there are processes to follow. It'll be getting sorted out at the railway's usual pace. I don't know why you think they'd jump to writing everything off.

Bear in mind these forums are sometimes monitored by people in the industry, so just be cool.

So I’ve found out the role was built and advertised but had never been consulted in with the union. I will find out more on the 11th August, fingers crossed.

Well that wouldn't be the first time. I participated in negotiations, at local TU level, about four new signalling jobs, but awaited further info from management. Suddenly, after discussion at higher level, these four new jobs were withdrawn and replaced by a re-org of relief staff in the area. As a result extra jobs appeared on the displacement notices that local TU reps knew nothing about.

Yep job has been withdrawn am absolutely gutted have waited months for nothing!
Sorry to hear. Have they indicated how the interview went? I know there’s no job now, but it would be worth enquiring how the interview went both to aid you in future interviews, or to work with in case there’s another suitable job they can offer?

I had this with DB Cargo a couple of years ago. Had an interview for Junior Driver and heard nothing. After a couple of months of chasing them up, I was advised that regrettably they’ve withdrawn the vacancy due to unforeseen circumstances (losing a large contract I think).

Anyway, I asked how the interview went and although vague they did say it was a very good interview (to the extent that I got the impression I stood a realistic chance had the job still been available). I also said I’d be interested in any Groundstaff positions they had, they said they’d keep me on file. Fast forward a 6 months or so I received a letter (I know, shocking in this day and age!) inviting me for assessment as Groundstaff. I was halfway through driver training at the time so I politely declined, but it’s worth noting that sometimes companies do actually keep your details on file :D

Good luck!
