If you watch the bit of the movie when it plays at the beginning, you'll understand why it hits "all the feels". It also plays again a few minutes later when, after having to fire the wave motion gun at the enemy, Captain Okita says they have given away their intentions and requests permission to get underway. The final time it plays is after Yamato warps back to Earth and HQ contacts them - reporting that they have the device...
