Hi there!

I'll be travelling from Nottingham To Cumbria (Same Day Return) this Saturday

However i'm confused with the tickets with Northern Rail.

Here's the fairs i'm confused does this ticket cover all the changes that's included?.

Also does the tickets state the platforms? As i'd hate to have a mad dash to catch all the connections.

Stefan44, welcome to the forum. Have you considered travelling via Manchester?

Also do you realise those tickets are Advance tickets, restricting you to those booked services, we here could certainly try and find you a better value ticket, also giving you flexibility should your plans change.

The tickets won't state the platform, as these can change, but there are information boards at the station which will clearly indicate which one you need.

You mention you're open to anything. Would this include split tickets (you have two tickets for one train, but it's cheaper than one ticket?)

Absolutely , as long as i can get there on time and back on time i'm good lol :D
Great :) First of all, do you have a Railcard? These give you 1/3 off ticket prices.
(You can get one if you're 16-25 years old and you may wish to buy one at a station if you see yourself making several journeys by train in the next 12 months.)

I don't have one.
Okay.

The Northern Rail website offers you the return journey for £58 by making you commit to specific trains. That's a pretty good price considering the distance so you aren't losing out by buying those tickets.

However, if you don't mind being a bit naughty with your tickets, I can show you flexible tickets (you can catch any train) for about £10 cheaper. It involves using a little-known rule about using a 7 day season and non-stop trains.

Bearing in mind you're here from Sweden, and English may not be your mother tongue, it's your call to make.

Seems to be fairly well known amongst staff, I've never had an issue there. As for normals.. :D

Out of interest, what is this method please?

I've had mixed responses from staff in the North West

Non-railway people are only just cottoning on to split tickets where the train stops, due to its nascent increase in publicity.

I feel some amongst the general public may struggle to get a 19c right every time, especially if combining it with 'stopping short' etc.

Stefan44, if price is the most important factor here (along with getting there on time) then you can have the combination, saving £10. Remember that if anything goes wrong, we'll assist you to the best of our abilities. If you feel you wouldn't be confident enough using a "loophole" then I would advise just buying the first tickets you saw.

Not only do you need to inform the OP, he would need the confidence to also assure and inform in a language which isn't his first any member of staff who doesn't understand condition 19.

Given the confusion expressed by the OP in simple advance tickets, I'm not sure for the sake of a tenner that trying to further encourage someone who is new to rail in this country to consider let alone understand a condition 19 principle is appropriate advice.

My point exactly. Therefore is it appropriate to encourage 19c to someone unfamiliar.

Except you're not going to be accompanying him on his journey.

I don't disagree with the sentiment of your post. I am not encouraging using the 19c (which is a fairly simple principle), I'm putting all options on the table. It is up to the OP to consider them.

No but I'd be able to as I have a season ticket for most of the route ;)

I interpreted this:

slightly differently to you I think. However I agree that caution needs to be shown. As above, I'm happy to give more details to the OP, but only if they're comfortable with the risks.

Good decision ;)

Remember that even though you must be in time for your specific train (if you miss it through your own fault you'll have to pay more) if the railway is at fault (eg a late train makes you miss your connection) then you can catch the next available train at no extra cost, plus request compensation for the delay.

Even if the worst happens and a late train means you miss the last connection home, you're still protected. If you speak to any member of rail staff (the train guard, station staff etc) they'll arrange another way of getting you home, at no extra cost (for example reimbursing a bus fare, or ordering you a taxi).

It's a protection that's quite generous:
Condition 43 of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage said:
43. Help from Train Companies if you are stranded
If disruption caused by circumstances within the control of a Train Company or a Rail Service Company leaves you stranded before you have reached your destination printed on or stored on your ticket, and the Train Company whose trains you are entitled to use is unable to get you to that destination by other means, any Train Company which is in a position to help will, if it reasonably can, either arrange to get you to that destination, or provide overnight accommodation for you.
Enjoy your journey!

Judging by the journey times in your opening post, it will be a mixture of train companies, including East Midlands Trains and Virgin Trains.

All the exact information will be in the email you got when you bought your tickets.

If you can't access the email or print it out, your ticket (reservations) will say the exact train and time on them. Remember to keep everything together as each ticket is only valid with the others :)

Ps take a phone/laptop charger - it's a long journey and some of the trains will have electric sockets.

It doesn't say on the Email it just says ''6:58 to Carlisle'' and then alot of other tickets with the changes on.

Catch the ***** to Crewe then catch the ***** to Tamworth and so on.

It doesn't state the platforms or company.

Does it say which time each part of the journey starts? Eg 06:58 Nottingham -> Derby then the bits from Derby onwards?

Correct me if I'm wrong; are these the trains you're booked on going from Nottingham -> Carlisle?:

Outward
06:58 Nottingham -> Derby (arrive 07:29, CrossCountry train service to Cardiff Central)
07:40 Derby -> Crewe (arrive 08:59, East Midlands Trains service to Crewe)
09:09 Crewe -> Carlisle (arrive 10:59, Virgin Trains service to Edinburgh)

Return
17:10 Carlisle -> Crewe (arrive 18:58, Virgin Trains service to London Euston)
19:19 Crewe -> Stafford (arrive 19:41, London Midland service to Birmingham New Street)
19:51 Stafford -> Tamworth (arrive 20:14, London Midland service to Northampton)
20:19 Tamworth -> Derby (arrive 20:39, CrossCountry service to Leeds)
21:13 Derby -> Nottingham (arrive 21:41, East Midlands Trains service to Nottingham)
