Might have wasted my time last night applying for the Leeds positions, I forgot that I'd failed a DSI test for a non-driver role on the 24th September, so I'm 4 days away from the 6 months elapsing. With the volume of applicants they surely recieve, I'll probably get a rejection this time based on this.
Lets hope they take 4 days to get to yours!

Ta mate. I used the same app form I used last year, which got me within smelling distance of getting the job. 7 months later and don't even get short listed.

It's puzzling isn't it, especially if it got you through to interview and you passed that. Mine this time was more or less the same with a nod to knowing where I can improve on my interview, I was hoping for one last chance to do myself justice and get to assessment and then if unsuccessful there's probably no point in applying again. I've had all different responses from a similar app with different TOCs and roles, so just when you think they must be able to see something in you, someone else doesn't. I would probably be best suited to getting in with a different role and building my experience and taking it from there, but it's rare to see anything come up.
Oh well, keep trying mate, I expect I'll be updating this thread with my rejection email before long, it is now showing as on hold.

I got through the interview stage for Picc too. Does anyone have any idea how long the next stage will take? Redundancy looms for me so time is crucial. Im contemplating doing the Driver tests myself in Crewe....anybody else done this?!?

Time scales can obviously vary, last year I sat the interview and assessments within 2 weeks, I'm guessing that's not the case this time. Though the course is rumoured to start in May/June, so I can't imagine the assessments will be to far off.
With regards private assessments, I have never tried Crewe but have contacted DBS in Doncaster a few times this year, unfortunately the answer is consistently the same, "we are unable to offer private assessments at the moment, due to internal HR work, contact us again next month".
If you have already had your interview, I would sit tight if I were you and let Northern organise the assessments.

I got an email yesterday letting me know I wasn't successful for the Machester Picc driver job. Gutted but that's life. Good luck to all those that got through. What are the chances of getting any feedback? I've asked so hopefully they give me something constructive.

Hi mate, hard luck not getting through. I was at the same point last year and requested feedback which they kindly gave, it was quite generic, but hopefully enough to do better if ever given the chance.
Yes mate, unfortunately I've been and had a look at my app form and like a complete numpty I missed signing the drugs and alcohol statement so it's my own fault.
Am not too upset, there's plenty of time for other application's and luckily trainee driver would be a bonus but I would gladly settle for another role.
You're not alone young just checked my application for Carlisle and I've also missed out the drugs and alcohol signature. No idea how I missed that looks like I'll get an auto reject then. Gutted

To youngboy and beardfoot . Don't be to hard on yourselves , i too checked my app and noticed the drug and alcohol declaration missing from my application. I know i would not have missed that so phoned up HR. A very helpful lady told me that this was a new part of the application and any alterations are also added to any current applications hence showing it incomplete. She assured me this was not the reason i didn't get an interview. Annoyingly the reason i didn't make it was because according to google i live 1hr and 1 minute from the depot and there is no leeway to the 60 min rule due to the safety critical nature of the role. Not sure if this will make you feel better or not but at least you know

I had that email about requiring another 4 weeks and my status is now showing on hold.I got this email about 10 days ago.
How many other members are on hold?
I really do this the whole short listing process requires a good slice of luck and some don't even get read.
My TPE application got me through to the next stage with quite short answers to the questions no longer than this post.
Anyhow good luck to those who have passed their interviews and unlucky to those who have been given the no thanks.

I live in Liverpool so yes I'm just under an hour away by car. I also said I'd be relocating should I be offered the position. Hopefully the feedback will help me out for future applications. I received an email back saying that I should receive some feedback within 10 working days.

You've just cheered me up big style. I just couldn't understand how I managed to miss it after spending nearly a day on the application. So am I correct from your HR conversation the drugs/alcohol part gets added to your application AFTER you've submitted it?? and then makes your application appear incomplete?? Therefore all current applications will be "incomplete" ?

That's what HR told me , it is in fact a new addition to the application but gets added to all current applications. Maybe someone who got through to interview could check their application and confirm they also have this as incomplete .
Do you live further than an hour away , if so this could be the reason you didn't get through. The frustrating thing is that in reality driving into Manchester at non peak times would only take me about 45 min , however i suppose they have to have some sort of criteria for the cut off point.

I got through to the interview and they asked me there about it and just marked it off, so i wouldnt worry about that going against your application because my guess is everyone had the same problem.
Anyone know what Northern are like for notice periods? Mine is 8 weeks which makes me worried for the June start on the job I have applied for. My notice is probablyy negotiable with my current employers should I get an offer, but is my application likely to get binned before I get that chance?

You will be offered a job and be expected to start when they want. Notice periods don't come into it. I got a job on a Thursday say and they wanted me to start on the Monday, bear in mind i had a months notice to work. The following Monday i started on the railway. They will not wait for you, wrong really.

They do (MT 4.1). I wouldn't panic over it - I was concerned, but on the day had ample time to not only answer all the questions, but also check my answers on the first 20 or so after I'd finished. 18 minutes is quite a long time when some of the questions take 5 seconds or less.
As for taking the assessment privately, you're better off deciding yourself - I'm not sure you'll get a 'mock run' however, fail and you've used one of your two lives. I personally wouldn't bother, I'm not paying for something a TOC would provide if your application is good enough, and if your application isn't good enough, well, you've done your money, haven't you? Obviously though, everyone is different, and some may prefer to have that pass in the bag BEFORE applying, if you think you may be slightly short on the experiences TOCs look for in candidates, an assessment pass might well be the difference between getting an interview and not doing.

As for taking the assessment privately, it got me into my job, so I'll always recommend the concept. There was only 1 job going and I was against Internal competetion, so I needed all the help I could get.
Of cause, others who have paid for it and never got a job out of it will recommend against it and say what a waste of money it was.

If you get paid 4 weekly all you will lose if you tell them you can only give 4 weeks is your holiday pay accumulated. This will need to be a mutual agreement with your current company though and if asked by anyone at interview tell them the notice period may be negociable.
