Out of interest what is the salary for Stockport Shunters?
I know that all they do is pull points, see trains on/off and maybe tank. I'd like to see how it compares with Driver Operators.

Just shy of £28,000 for shunters at Stockport.Just received email regarding visual comparison for the trainee train driver , made it through to shortlisting to my astonishment. Only 43 answered and one definitely wrong. There is nothing on these forums to say a mark this low is a pass historically, so have northern dropped the standard or do they actually consider the strength of your application at this stage also.

I got that same email as well, saying that my application is to be considered for shortlisting.

As for whether they consider the strength of your application at this stage I doubt that's the case, as surely they get so many applications in they can't have had time to do so. Could be wrong though, but I'm guessing you were right on the cusp and were lucky to be on the right side of the divide between pass & fail.

I've just checked my emails from last time and as a guide I was sent another email 3 days after this one asking me to attend an interview, it could be completely different this time around, but just thought I'd share my past experience.

Thanks for that hopefully it is only 3 days I'm forever checking x

Has anybody who completed the online visual comparison tests for the Blackpool position actually had a reply regarding their test results / the next stage? It was 2 weeks today since the deadline and I've heard nothing! I know some have received emails regarding the Manchester Piccadilly post, which had a later closing date. I know I'm probably worrying too much but I feel like I've fallen out of the net!

I applied for trainee driver Blackpool and haven't heard anything from the test. However I also applied for depot driver role at Blackpool/barrow! Received email saying since I've already taken online test and passed I am now at shortlisting stage waiting to see if my app is strong enough for interview. So I guess I passed the comparison test but haven't heard officially!

Hi, I applied for Blackpool and I got an e-mail saying I had passed the online test and I would hear from them in the next 6 weeks if I have been shortlisted for assessment. Good luck everyone and we may get to meet at the assessment day :D:D:D:D

Hi Michelle, that sounds promising, much more than I've heard. If you don't mind me asking when did you get that email? I'm getting tempted to ring them on that number posted earlier in this thread but I don't want to be too much of a hassle since I already emailed them asking the start date etc.

Be warned Skipton's work is 90% on the "Bradford triangle" with the odd trip up the S&C, so I've been told anyway.
Apply for Leeds if you want any sort of variety.

Damn Leeds is my perfect depot, but already applied to blackpool. Has anyone applied to 2 positions at the same time and succeeded with either...

Yes you can apply to both. Northerns only requirement is that you must live within an hours drive to either depot.

Just tried to apply and it would appear it may have changed from that, as the first question asks if you have a live driver application open, and if you do it states you cannot apply for more than 1 at a time. I may email them and ask if it's possible to swap my application over! I live within an hour of both depots (just!)

Hi folks been watching for a while. time to post and get my pm,s.
to answer sidekick, two easy options,
1. apply with a different email account. Or 2, just click no when they ask if you have an open application. its just a computer weedout in the early stages i reckon.

You reckon? If discovered you may as well say goodbye to the job! The best thing to do here is go through the application and then ask them if successful if there is a chance of getting the job at the other depot, this has happened quite a lot depending on demand for either depot and if there are vacancies at both and you are what they want it will not be a problem, start messing about going against the rules of the application you may as well not bother in the first place!.

Yeah, I was of the same opinion. I won't be messing them about when there are so few chances! I emailed them and had my application transferred to Leeds, job done!

An interesting thing about these new positions is that the pay seems to be higher. £19.8k during training, and £44k odd when qualified: compared to £18.8k and £41.5k now respectively.
At first I thought this was the East/West differences - but surely carlisle is an ex-FNW area? Anyone noticed.

Carlisle is an Eastern depot.

Carlisle was always eastern (ATN), due to Leeds-Carlisle and Newcastle Carlisle being jointly worked.

I think Whitehaven (FNW) used to work all the Cumbrian Coast stuff.

Hey Paul85,
I too was in the same boat (or carriage) so I took it upon myself to give Northern a call as my Wife kept pestering me to do so but also for a little piece of mind to find out if I had passed the visual comparison test.
They were quite helpful and said that the reason they hadn't responded to everyone was due to "thousands" of people applying.
They'll also tell you whether you have passed the visual comparison test too if you really want to find out then give them a call on 01904 568 543.

I passed btw so may see you and others at interview stage.

East is £19.8k training (or keep the same salary if internal - this is massively higher for some grades ) then on passing out, straight onto £45k or whatever it is after the Apr 2013 pay rise.

On West you get a lot less especially if your an Internal. £18k while training (internals take a pay drop which could be tens of thousands!), then year 2 is £35k, year 3 is £38k and year 4 onwards £41.5k.

MDD Drivers (East) only have to do part of the mainline course if they transfer to mainline. MDD Drivers (West) have to do the entire course right from the beginning to the end!

It's easy to see why East attracts so much more Internals than West.

There is no pay rise in April 2013.
