I don't think they are that strict, depending on your circumstances. I live over an hour away from the location I applied for earlier this year and was successful at interview. But I was able to demonstrate that I could relocate immediately.

Trainee positions for Leeds have also gone up today for Northern, with a closing date of tomorrow.

Out of curiosity, has anyone previously applied with Northern for one location and then asked to change to another part way through the application process? Is this even possible? I have passed an interview at one location recently, but Sheffield (that is now being advertised) is much closer to where I live.

How on earth is this still advertised? Are they going for a Northern record?! They must need heaps of people, 5 days now and counting. Good luck to all applying!

I've applied for the Leeds trainee position. My friend, who is also from Bradford, was successful last year and has passed all his training not so long ago - I hope to join him this year!

I would presume that HR at the moment have their hands full with the Franchise change coming up on April 1st. They are run ragged especially in Recruitment!

Good luck to all those that apply!

I applied internally in December 2015, Out of all the applicants 5 of us got through to the Assessment Stage but only Myself and another got passed! The other 3 failed.

Been a long 3 Months since applying but I had my medical a few weeks ago and received my job offer earlier this week.

I start on Aprils course. Currently have about 6 Shifts left to work as a Guard.

I had a feeling they would re-advertise as there was another vacancy on my course but as no-one else got through the Assessments so they closed that position.

Best advice I can give you is to get the application out of the way and then the Interview, If you get offered an Assessment date then go from there with what the Assessments consist of.

One thing I always say to people is don't run before you can walk, Take one step of the application process at a time.

People get hung up about the Assessments but are not always successful with the Interview or even their initial application.

The above advice is meant in the nicest possible way but I did not even look into the Assessments until about 1 Week before I was due to sit them. I focussed on getting through each stage.

Cheers

This is sound advice.

I've been actively applying for roles within the rail industry for a few years now (not a long time compared to some members who post regularly on this forum) and out of all the applications, I have only had 2 interviews and 1 assessment day.

Passing the sift is difficult and luck based. Passing the assessment day is a lot to do with focus, but don't bother yourself with that until you're offered a place at an assessment day.

Also, this industry takes its time. So be prepared to wait for answers / updates.

Thank you - I'm already a qualified driver and maybe in the future might need to transfer North, with Sheffield a very good location. Looks like a nice variety of routes and mix of traction

Afternoon all!

Anyone still waiting to hear back re: this vacancy?
I keep logging on to my online application, probably about twice, maybe three times a day to check on it! Still not had any emails or contact from them and my application status still shows as: "New Submitted Application"

From what I gather from a few of the other threads in here, it appears that they are just working through the applications in order and contacting applicants to approve or reject their applications as they work through them, but like everyone that has an ongoing application, I'm a little bit concerned that "no news is bad news" (contrary to the famous old saying).

So is anyone else still waiting to hear back? (Come on, pipe up now and make me feel a little bit better about my situation! :D)

I'm waiting for an update on the Trainee Train Driver for Leeds. I've heard nothing as yet. And I'm the same, checking e-mails and the northern website all day! :p

Position only closed 3 weeks ago and the email said they'd respond in 2-4 weeks, or later depending on the volume of applicants.

Just had this as a reply from HR when I sent a query email to ask about what was happening with my application:

Thank you for getting in touch with the HR Contact Centre. We have reviewed your query and can confirm the following solution:

Due to the interest that the vacancy generated it is proposed to have a phased approach to the short listing of the applications, we will therefore be in touch within the next 4 weeks to advise you whether you have been successful in being progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Please accept our apologies for the delay in dealing with your application.

Many Thanks

The HR Contact Centre Team

So there's still hope for those of us that haven't heard back yet!

Keep the faith!

Heard nothing officially, but speaking to some northern guys I hear they are looking for 60 drivers for Sheffield alone. Not sure about the accuracy of this, but apparently courses will be starting every 2 weeks from the end of the summer. Combination of general short staffing in recent years and new franchise commitments so I am told.

Ooh interesting, someone else said they were after 12 people in another thread, hopefully it is 60, obviously gives me a better chance.

I think 60 is way off the mark given the size of Sheffield depot, 12 sounds more realistic.
Also there might be redundant Freightliner Heavy Haul drivers applying, which could reduce the number of trainees required.

I'll just do my best, nothing else I can do really. They don't give you much notice for interview, only 6 days. I'll have to see if I can put a holiday in at work.

Does any have any idea how many they usually short list?
