Last lot of strikes Northern extended the Liverpool service to/from Wilmslow; now now it's just to Airport!

I have booked a journey from Cricklewood to Dronfield and back on 2/1, and I have been notified the Northern leg between Chesterfield and Dronfield has been deleted. There aren't any Northern services in the timetable now at Dronfield on that day, with only a few limited EMR services. Is it related to the industrial action?

There is no service on the Calder Valley line on Sunday which means a 4 day strike has resulted in SIX days of no service whatsoever between Leeds and Manchester via Hebden Bridge

There is also no service on this route on Christmas Eve

I've just noticed this.

No engineering works on the route either - just a train operator not doing its job by the looks of it.

According to the staff member I spoke to, the lack of trains is due to the overtime ban. I'm presuming this is the one Shapps put on

Isn't Sundays classed as overtime for certain guard depots in Northern? Especially in the Manchester area. Hence no guards to run the services so they decided it would be safer to cancel everything?

Yes but mainly (only?) in the west. Some trains ran in the Leeds, Sheffield and North East but only between c 09.00 and 17.00.

The trains have reappeared back in the timetable with the original timing.

It won't be too long until Craig Whittaker (the Conservative MP for the Calder Valley) gets involved.

Services could still go ahead, albeit revised and ran with Leeds staff to run between Leeds and Todmorden although it does mean getting Preston PSB to man the points east of Tod to allow turnback otherwise it'd be at Hebden Bridge. Leeds to Huddersfield via Halifax would be unaffected since its mostly ran with Huddersfield based crews.

Will Northern be bothered to put anything on January 5 I wonder, when other TOCs will manage it.

A stark fact is that in the month from 10th Dec to 9th Jan there has been a service on the Calder Valley line between Leeds and Manchester and the majority of the West Yorkshire network besides the Airedale/Wharfedale on only 14 days out of 31 days

10/11/12 Dec
13/14/15/16/17/18 Dec - NO SERVICE
19/20/21/22/23 Dec
24/25/26/27 Dec - NO SERVICE
28/29/30/31 Dec
1 Jan - NO SERVICE
2 Jan
3/4/5/6/7/8 - NO SERVICE
9 Jan

I am considering going to Leeds on Easter Monday. I have little confidence of getting there by train with TPE unreliable, Northern becoming unreliable and possible engineering work at Huddersfield. I therefore looked up National Express coaches to get there from Manchester.

Really? I don't recall him ever getting involved with rail issues in any meaningful way in the past. In fact I don't really recall him getting involved with any local issues in any meaningful way....unless it meant a good photo opportunity or a chance to flirt with married women (my wife included!, or preferably both). He is very much a roads/car lobby man and largely a waste of space (allegedly). I hope to see him lose his seat at the next general election.

Full disclosure: He is currently my MP. :frown:

Worth mentioning...

Northern cancelled one train today (Wednesday 28 December) stating it was "due to industrial action, and as such no bus will be provided". This was almost 24 hours after industrial action had finished, and all other operators had run a near full service since 8.40am on the Tuesday morning - yesterday. A letter was passed via my MP to Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister to look into Northern Trains' questionable excuse.

Next week, Northern have also cancelled all trains on that line on 01 January 2023, this time citing "engineering work at Manchester". After contacting Network Rail who rebutted the false claim stating full route availability on the two possible routes, Northern were asked to run a bus service, but again refused. This too has been passed to the Rail Minister to look into.

Last time, their Managing Director, Nicholas Donovan responded initially totally denying a similar incident then when questioned further sent the former rail minister (Heaton-Harris) a grovelling letter stating 'we got it wrong' and 'we commit to not repeating this error' - priceless.

The real reason why there will be no service on many Northern routes on Sunday 1st Jan is because of the rest day work ban, so there will be virtually no conductors working, as Sundays rely very heavily on overtime. And especially in the West were conductors can opt out of booked Sundays with a weeks notice, not many will want to work New Years Day.

This we all know. Whilst Northern's responses are pure comedy, their subsequent refusal to put a replacement bus on crosses the line from under-performance to malice.

They've not used the volcano in Bradford excuse yet.

Despite no Network Rail signalling or maintenance strikes, coinciding with the RMT guard strike, it seems Northern intend to barely run any strike day services again, particularly in the North West.

Timetables

The below services are the only services running on strike days. Later timetable dates will be available closer to the time.

Darlington - Saltburn

Liverpool - Manchester Airport

York - Leeds

Leeds - Hebden Bridge

Leeds - Ilkley

Leeds - Skipton

Leeds - Moorthorpe - Sheffield

Leeds - Bradford Forster Square

Apart from Leeds to Hebden Bridge (which I think is new) the timetables appear to be identical to those previously operated.

Presumably Northern only have the same number of non-RMT personnel available to act as guards?

That would be my assumption. However given there are unlikely to be line closures at the beginning/end of the day (as on previous strike days) it may make more sense to start the day earlier and finish later with a gap in the middle of the day.

It appears worse, I think originally the Liverpool strike day service ran to/from Wilmslow via Manchester Airport.
It seems outrageous and very poor on Northern's part that there aren't even 2 additional trained managers to run an hourly Bolton - Oxford Rd shuttle.

If the schools are shut we might be looking at reducced numbers of staff available on these strike timetable days? Some schools are closed Wednesday & Thursday next week.

A bit of a long shot, but does the Settle & Carlisle line run on strike days?

My guess would be no, but I wanted to check with those more in the know!

Never has done before.

I'd assume, as someone with no operational knowledge of the line whatsoever, it probably isn't the easiest to train managers on either. Would be a lot of effort for relatively little gain. In that part of the world, the very limited resource is far better utilised on the Shipley Triangle services.

Thank you, yes makes sense! Sadly I planned to go from Surrey to Settle and it's looking likely I will have to drive as I couldn't see a way to do Leeds-Settle by bus! (as SWR and LNER will run services so I would be able to get by Train to Leeds at least)

Not even from Skipton?

Settle is quite a way from Leeds.

Settle is served by route 580 from Kirkby Lonsdale Coach on Saturdays. Every two hours, journey time 40 mins between Skipton Bus Station and Settle Market Place. It's hourly Monday - Friday and no service on Sundays. Last services just after 1700.

True but will there be a train from Leeds to Skipton on strike days? or is that by another bus (if so I appreciate any information as to which number!)
