Northern have published details of their strike timetables

Very limited timetables on these routes only

Liverpool - Earlestown - Manchester - Manchester Airport
York - Leeds
Ilkley - Leeds
Skipton - Leeds
Leeds - Sheffield
Bradford Forster Square - Leeds

They aren’t bothering to provide anything other than a strike service on Thursday 15th December despite there being no strike this day, which sums up the attitude the industry has these days, they are hardly doing everything they can to provide the maximum service they can, just rolling over with the easiest option

On 15 Dec Probably due the micro managing by the DfT; they might as well say they won’t pay staff on 15 Dec or on any single non strike day between strike days.

If the management chose not to run on days between strikes that's up to them. If they want even more trouble and bad press then not paying staff on days they are in is definitely the way to go, nor do I think it's legal.

This certainly sums up Northern. They were the only operator, I believe, who ran no additional services on the first two days after the previous strike was called off.
Questions need to be asked of both Northern Trains and Transport for the North.

There is a strike timetable unless you live in Blackpool, Blackburn, Barrow, Bridlington, Harrogate and many other places. So on the 15th the lines will be open (from 07.00/08.00), staff will come in and get paid for doing nothing yet Northern can't be bothered.

The lack of any effort by Northern to put on a service on the non-strike day is rather frustrating. Is there any strong operational reason that helps to explain why they aren't running more services that day?

I asked Northern and got the following reply.
"Hello Peter, I am sorry for the disruption this may cause, sadly this is due to the shortage of resources the strike action on the 16th will cause. ^VR

I expect the reason is simply "we haven't got the planning resources to devise and implement a separate 'shoulder day' timetable". Bear in mind that whilst there has been a more intensive 'shoulder day' timetable (essentially a normal service with early trains cancelled) on previous strike days, this can't simply be copied forward, as these latest strikes fall under the new December timetable - which sees significant changes to services, particularly on the west side.

It's possible they'll feel able to devise a 'shoulder day' timetable for the 5th of January. I wouldn't hold my breath though - the internal perception will likely be that it's a lot of effort for 1 day, when most people will hold off travelling anyway due to the "do not travel" messaging.

TPE have now released their timetable and I see we're back to nothing across the Pennines again.

They managed to make it to Manchester last time, so it's irritating that we're going backwards again.

The strike timetable appears to be the same times each hour from around 09:00 on Sunday 18th December as well for some reason, presumably the overtime ban. Note this isn't the normal Sunday timetable times but the same times as Tuesday with a later start and earlier finish??

There could just be no service on that day.

There are some services between Manchester and York. They're showing in National Rail Enquiries too.

Well the Northern website says check before you travel rather than don't travel. And they only show timetables up to the 17th.

Not on Saturday there aren't.

Saturdays and Sundays are likely to have different timetables or even no service at all during the strike and overtime ban, yes.

Alas it's Saturday I need to travel. However, during the last Saturday strike, TPE ran a service from York to Manchester, which would have been of use.

They are on the NORTHERN site, links from this page https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/travel/strikes
It's not clear whether the Ilkley/Skipton – Bradford Forster Square electrics are running on Sunday or not.
Thanks. They were not shown yesterday. If the wording on the website is correct (!) the Ilkley/Skipton to Bradford service should run normally.
I am at a loss to understand why some of the routes are closing early (around 18.00) whilst others appear to be operating normally.

The wording is:
All other routes do not have service or replacement buses on this day
so those won't be running.

Signaller issues perhaps?

You're correct now, but for posterity the wording for Sunday 18th was different when the previous poster posted. At that time it said something like "all other routes will run as normal". Until a moment ago I still had the page open with the old text and saw it change as I refreshed.

Does anyone know if Northern's timetables for 2nd Jan are hiding anywhere or have they yet to release them? I know it isn't a strike day but searching my journey on train line and NRE bring up no results and there's nothing specific on Northern's website

Just looking at the services running around Manchester for today's strike day on RTT, there are some ingenious routings.
Avanti is operating quite a strong WCML service London/Birmingham/Manchester/Liverpool, fewer to Preston/Glasgow.
Manchester services run via Crewe and Styal (Stoke and Stockport being closed).
XC is running this way as well to Birmingham, as far as Reading and Southampton.
No services towards Chester, Sheffield or Stoke, or at Victoria or on Calder Valley routes.
TPE is running Piccadilly-York via Guide Bridge, and Airport-Preston via Bolton.
Northern is running the Liverpool-Manchester Airport stopper, so Liverpool-York is possible.
Merseyrail are running 4tph on the Wirral lines (West Kirby, New Brighton, and turning at Rock Ferry), and 3tph on the Northern line (Southport, Ormskirk, Kirkby, but nothing towards Hunts Cross).

Interesting that many freight services are running, between Thames ports and Trafford Park, for instance.
Liverpool-Drax biomass trains are routed via Chat Moss, Piccadilly and Huddersfield, crossing the throat at Piccadilly.
Liverpool-Euston services are also running via Earlestown and Warrington BQ (not stopping), as the Liverpool South Parkway/Runcorn route is closed.

Keeping PSB/ROC routes open is obviously easier than multiple manual boxes, but (eg) Astley, Eccles and Diggle must be open, while Victoria is closed.
While Preston and York boxes are open, the line between them via Hebden Bridge (which they control throughout) is not.

At Birmingham New St there are services on WCML routes, XC is running to Leeds/York/Leicester/Reading but not Bristol.
There are local services on the cross-city line, but nothing to Shrewsbury/Hereford, or at Snow Hill/Moor St.
No TfW services anywhere north of Newport.
