Are you really claiming that the measured level of takeup is wrong based on one person's anecdotal evidence based on a single flow? What sample size does that represent and what evidence do you have that its representative? Sorry but it would be hard to think of an better example of an unrepresentative sample based on an inadequate sample size, virtually guaranteed to give wildly inaccurate results.
Ideally all stations would be barriered and therefore fare evasion would fall significantly. That's never going to happen of course, though.
That's fine on lines with a frequent service in a suburban area but having barriers at stations like Pontefract Baghill is a non-starter. You'd have to provide staff at the limited times trains actually operate (otherwise they'll be a risk of the barriers failing and passengers being locked in the station) and then if a staff member is provided it'd be more cost-effective to have them doing a manual check.
Then its probably not a good tine to point out that work has also started in Baildon to install a TVM.....![]()
I'm not trying to claim that the figures are wildly wrong, nor that my own observations are somehow better- that would be absurd! My issue is really that as there's no way of measuring exits and entries at Batley or Mirfield, it is impossible for the figures to be 100% accurate. If those figures are then used to justify changes to services, those making the decisions should tread carefully.

Use of MCards could be a source of useful data, if only it were gathered and recorded accurately. For example, on buses the system will log where my card was used to board a bus but there'll be no log of where I travel to. Do Metro or the operator assume I've travelled the whole route? Then there's the revenue: how is my £106 each month distributed between Metro themselves, Northern (used their machine), and the bus and train operators I actually travel with?
The service is being improved. They'll get a morning peak departure for Manchester from next May which will arrive in Manchester pre-9am and an evening peak departure from Manchester post-5pm. Although, they'll be no service between the morning and evening peaks.
Until said person pulls a fiver out...TVM at *Ardwick*?!
Why don't they just bite the bullet and close it? Barely anyone ever uses it and it has a joke of a service. If it doesn't justify all the Hadfields calling it doesn't justify existing, and the footbridge looks like it's about to rust away to nothing.
Or is it being kept open in anticipation of planned "regeneration" developments of posh flats?
Having said all that, I suppose it could be to stop people on peak workings stopping there from saying "I got on at Ardwick, mate" and getting away with not paying. IOW, there being no intention of anyone ever actually buying a ticket there.
A TVM at ARDWICK??
They'll put one at Denton next... absolute madness! I thought I'd seen everything from these tram obsessed clowns-but clearly not!
It's different to the screens at neighbouring Northern stations- uses white LEDs rather than orange.
They are going to put one at Denton - as well as Reddish South and Manchester United!
Manchester United seems the most ridiculous of them all...They are going to put one at Denton - as well as Reddish South and Manchester United!

Can't believe that many people just make a single journey back into Manchester!
I bet a lot do, as they know they will get away with doing so for nowt as the trains are too crowded to sell tickets. A few 80 quid specials will soon stop that.
