The train I was due to travel on tomorrow has been cancelled due to a "short notice change to the timetable" am I able to claim compensation?

You can certainly claim. Whether or not Northern will pay it is another question, but if you don't make a claim then you cannot find out how they will respond.

"A short notice change to the timetable" is typically rail-speak for a shortage of traincrew or units - which would tend to demonstrate a lack of reasonable care and skill - so even if Delay Repay is denied and you don't want to pursue that avenue, you may well have a Consumer Rights Act claim.

My worry is they have announced it before 10pm the night before travel.
10pm the night before no longer has any significance following the new NRCoT introduced in April.

As I say, if you don't make a claim, you won't know where their response is.

As it happens both my outward and return journeys were cancelled. I was using a complementary return. I've submitted a delay repay claim for both 60 minute delays. Will see how I get on but I'm wondering if it will be capped at one free return ticket.

For the avoidance of doubt I did travel and was delayed an hour in each direction. I was travelling using a free return ticket.

You should be issued with 2 complimentary return tickets if delayed by 60+ minute delays on both legs, though I don't know if that's written publically anywhere.

I suspect given that you were traveling on a complimentary ticket your claim will be approved, regardless of when the cancellation was published.
