GWR are the only operator with a single Class 158 centre carriage, maybe he meant that?

No. LM don't have any 158s. The odd GWR 158 vehicle is not the centre car in the 3 Car formations. A number of 2 Car 158s were split and the carriages bolted on the end of other 2 Car 158s to form 3 Car formations, not placed in the middle. GWR have one proper 3 Car unit, 158798.

What is not odd about the UK 'privately run' rail system. The system today costs the taxpayer more than it did under BR in its finals years. Nothing seems to make sense within the system these days.

Neither does this posts within the context of the thread!

319448 was on the 11:40 Man Airport to Liv Lime St today. I was on the 12:40 and that was 319450 which still had its Thameslink first class seats and covers. I also noticed that this unit had a disabled toilet unlike other Northern 319s that have two small toilets opposite each other.

As far as I'm aware all the units in white have had their two existing toilets removed and replaced by a single 'accessible' one - certainly, all those I have seen have.

Having spent time in Bristol last week and rode on one of Northern's incoming 150/1, it got me thinking.
Which depots are getting what stock when it starts to be cascaded or the new trains built?
Northern have 3 depots that have pacers what will replace them?
The new EMU's are going to operate both East and West of the pennines, are the new 331's going to be spit between depots or loco hauled between depots?

I don't know all the answers but what might help is Northern have planning permission for a new facility at Blackburn where 3 car trains with 23m carriages could be kept. As Blackburn won't have wires that suggests some of the 158s will be based at Blackburn.

170s will work Leeds-Dewsbury-Southport and Leeds-Harrogate-York which suggests they'll be based at Neville Hill, with possibly a couple of sets stabled in the North West overnight - maybe Wigan sidings?

I'd be surprised if some 150s aren't based in Yorkshire after the extra ones arrive.

As concerns the 170s, these appear to all be Leeds based if the timetable stays the same as the one Northern has proposed (see http://www.opsta.btck.co.uk/sopman )
With a first departure from Leeds to Southport at 0522 arriving 0803 (hourly to 1722) and returns from Southport from 0824 arriving Leeds 1103 (hourly to 1926).

Northern actually has four depots - Heaton, Neville Hill, Newton Heath and Allerton.
From what I have been told by a reliable source the diesel units will be based at Newton Heath and the electric units at Allerton.

Northern have five depots you forgot Longsight where the 323's are based.
Of the five depots pacers are ONLY allocated to THREE of them. HT, NH and NL.
AN and LG do not have pacers

Longsight is an Alstom depot where 17 x 323s are homed alongside many Virgin units. Will Northern continue to use Longsight facilities once the 323s have left the fleet?

Alstom will maintain TPE's new CAF EMUs (Edge Hill and Longsight).
I don't think Northern has said anything about its CAF class 331 EMUs yet, or the class 195 DMUs for that matter.
Then there is the possibility of CAF having its own UK support/maintenance facility somewhere.

There will of course be the new Blackburn Depot in due course.

Is Blackburn going to be a FULL depot, a light servicing depot or just overnight parking for trains.
What everybody has to remember is Northern are withdrawing 15 m pacers ard replacing with 20 m and 23 m trains.
Northern's existing trains total length 15452.08 m
Northern's trains in 2020 total length 20175.87 m

20175.87
-15452.08
=4723.79 m of extra siding space needed every night to store trains.

Northern have said that all the new stock will be maintained in the existing depots. 195s at Newton Heath and Neville Hill. 331s at Neville Hill and Allerton. Blackburn is just a stabling and washing plant and will not do any heavy work similar to what Hull Botanic Gardens does for the stock working up there on diagrams out of Hull before they are rotated back to NH and Neville Hill.

I would guess that 150s will be split like the 142s are now between Newton Heath and Heaton with Heaton maybe gaining an allocation of 158s for the Carlisle jobs. We will see.

I am not sure that stabling is really an issue. Wigan, Preston, Blackburn, Sheffield, Harrogate, Barrow, Blackpool, Stockport, Darlington, Huddersfield, Leeds Holbeck and plenty of other stations overnight provide enough space for everything and more.

At the moment, Sheffield is an outstation of Heaton, so we get an allocation of their 142s on a rolling basis.

Does anyone know if this arrangement is expected to continue under the new franchise? (obviously the 142s are leaving, but I mean the situation where Northern send DMUs ECS from Tyneside to South Yorkshire on a regular basis)

It's a lot of distance to send units, but I doubt there's going to be much spare capacity at Neville Hill (and no scope for a "proper" depot in/around Sheffield).

Why would the 331s be maintained at Allerton. They are replacing the 323 which are looked after at Longsight and are used on South Manchester services and there are extra sets for say Blackpool and and were to be used to Windermere as well. As far as I know no 331s will operate to Lime street.
