With the delay of the Farnworth tunnel, will these effect the 319s being used on Preston-Liverpool in October?

As far as I know it won't effect them. They will still run. This will release diesels to strengthen busy Christmas services over the Bolton - Manchester line

It will effect traincrew diagrams as Blackpool drivers and guards don't sign 319's yet and not all Man Vic crew sign them meaning that the work will have to be re-allocated between Wigan, Lime St and the Vic men that sign the WCML and 319's (although Vic drivers don't sign through St Helens Ctrl)

The Blackpools are almost exclusively Lime St work at the moment, possibly in preparation for October?

There's definitely still one job where it is a vic guard all the way and I'm sure there is a few wiganers who venture up that way as well as a couple of Blackpool men.

What is a bit odd it the Lime St - Man Vic stoppers are mostly Wigan guard jobs and the Lime St - Man Airport are all bar 1 on a Saturday night Lime St guards!

I thought Blackpool were learning 319's ready for October? Or will they lose all the Lime St work come October temporarily?

Oh and don't forget, pretty sure there's a random Airport Sat morning which is a Wigan guard. I'm sure the lot at Lime St won't moan about some decent express work!

I'm not sure about the Saturday morning Wigan job as since the diagrams changed last month they guards haven't been to the airport at all. I do know the last one out of lime at for the airport (20:16) on a Saturday is a Wigan guard to MCO and then a vic guard takes it up to the airport and back to lime st to then work the 23:19 back to vic.

As a matter of interest, how long would it take for a driver to be ready to sign for a 319, and also a guard?

Guards course and pass out is done in 1 day. Driver is significantly longer. Think I've been told it's about 6 days incl pass out but that needs checking.

Apologies if it has already been mentioned, but Rail today says one of the extra 319s will be operating Manchester Piccadilly-Airport from December.
Presumably this is the shuttle rather than the one which runs through to Crewe.
This should release a 323 for other work, hopefully eliminating the remaining DMU workings under the wires south of Manchester.

Or will it? The 323s are currently undergoing retractioning work so it might be just to prevent DMUs filling in for 323s on Alderley Edge services which seems to have become commonplace recently.

The 07:56 Macclesfield-Manchester service could switch as long as they don't continue to try to use the unit off that service to run the FO Stockport-Stalybridge. (They could easily find another DMU to operate that service.)

I'm not sure what in the afternoon could switch. The 17:23 to Hazel Grove continues to Chinley, while the 16:58 to Hazel Grove is part of the same diagram that runs the 17:58 Stockport to Chester so switching the 16:58 probably wouldn't free up a DMU for long enough to do something else in the evening.

TfGM have asked Northern why 319 reliability is so poor and apparently they are working on a plan of action to improve reliability.

How close to what was previously serviced and maintained at the depot(s) are the 319 from a fitter's point of view?

What is the luggage storage capacity on a Class 319 when used on the Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport service, noting the likelihood of numbers of large items of luggage normally so transported on this service.

The only other thing which has been maintained at Allerton depot is the 156, before that it was mothballed for five years after they stopped doing wheel turning of 507/508's there. The depot staff were sent down south for a weeks basic training on the class before they arrived. So a lot of it will have to be learnt from the ROSCO tech support advisors, manuals and any staff transferred who previously worked on them, so you can understand why a lot of the indepth historical knowledge of maintaining them would have been lost.

We do have one of the lead engineers at Allerton who had transferred up from FCC land and brings a wealth of knowledge with him.
Unfortunately the ROSCO/TOC has changed some of the traction package on the Northern 319's after removal of the DC gear which has made them different to both operate and work on.

As of 05/10, all but two trains a day between Blackpool and Liverpool Lime Street go bye-byes, being divorced at Preston to enable electric trains to take over as many services as possible.

At the moment I am aware there are still some non-Blackpool services from Wigan which use DMUs under the wires, but I think I might be right in thinking that the 5th will represent a watershed in the northern hub electrification with all but those two Blackpool trains being operated by Class 319 trains. Am I right?

The Warrington Bank Quay services will still be DMU's until December.

And there will be one or two working that a DMU vice Electric (balancing moves) 1739 Lime St-Man Vic off the top of my head will be one and 1903 Wigan-Lime St because there's no 319 into Wigan, it comes off the 1814 Man Vic-Wigan
