I submitted my application late last night (thurs), when the applications were still live on the Northern website. I checked this morning and they had gone. I hope I made it in in time.

They must have got absolutely overwhelmed in one day, unbelievable how many people want to get into a Drivers role.
The last time they advertised for Drivers at Manchester they had an incredible 150 Internal Applicants alone!!!
For anyone who is actually dedicated and wants to start at the bottom and work their way up to the top, there may be a Depot Drivers job at Blackpool coming up soon. It's already advertised internal but its always possible it could go external soon as well.

There is no progression/promotion as such and there is no need to have occupied another role in order to get a Trainee drivers position when it is advertised externally. All internal vacancies are available to all employees of the company.

As Beveridges has made it clear judging by his own experiences, being a Depot driver is no guarantee of getting a mainline position.

It is no more 'natural' progression than a Cleaner getting a Driving job is. But at least it is a sort of Driving role.

They take their time to sort through applications.
Last time, I applied for train presentation operative and it took so long to hear anything. When I finally got a response it was a rejection email

Funny enough I have started to think that myself.

I have also applied for a few other vacancies at FGW and Heathrow Express

Northern went from one of the best recruitment teams to one of the worst within just a few months. All to do with money, which was a shame - they once had some good people up there.

Shows how good Northern recruitment is. Got told I was successful at app form and Interview stage. Had already passed the psychometric tests. Still did not get the job even though I did not fail anything.

Arriva Trains Wales beat that, they did exactly the same thing but kept giving me false start dates for the next 12 months only after that to ask me not to bother them again! Never before have I cancelled so many plans for going on holiday over nothing!

I have a friend who is in exactly the same position.

If you think Northern are bad, I recently had an interview at Ipswich for Conductor with NXEA. Travelled from Liverpool to Ipswich only for the interview to be cancelled. I was not a happy person.

Applied for a Job at Workington in 2007 and had interview. A fortnight later I rang York.

'Hello, I was interviewed for the Conductors post at Workington 2 weeks ago. Could you tell me if there's been a decision made?'

'I'll have a look for you'
'Well er..er..er. I don't know'
'Ok thank you for letting me know'

I never did hear anything after that.
