Speaking of playing with peoples lives, surely Arriva Trains Wales take some beating. In 2009 I passed the whole selection process for a Drivers position at Pwllheli & passed everything from application form through to final line manager Interview and medical and got a letter confirming I had passed the lot and we're just waiting for a start date.

I almost got ready to hand my notice in! Also cancelled any plans for holidays this year (had to miss three holidays in total), visited Pwllheli numerous times looking at houses, spent ages looking at houses online, worked loads of overtime in a job I didn't like (awful bottom link work at the time!) to save up money for the house, etc. Turned down the chance of applying with several other jobs that came up as I thought I'd got this one.
I kept phoning them every month & they kept telling me the job start date is a couple of months away. 6 months later got a letter saying the job is subject to recieving government funding. Phoned them again and they told me not to bother them again & they'd contact me if they have any news.
18 months later I got sick of waiting for them to contact me, emailed them for months on end then finally got a reply saying they do not have *any* plans for recruiting trainee mainline drivers!!! 2009/2010 was a horrendous pair of years thanks to ATW!!

Had problems myself with the wonderful ATW recruitment some time ago. Had an interview at the training centre on Plat 1 in Chester; they never wrote back to me afterwards, so when I contacted them in Cardiff some time later, they claimed the interview never happened.... did I imagine it!?! lolol

Unfortunatley its like that in every sector in the UK at the moment, Unemployments so high that potential employers can **** you over and still have 1000 people prostrating themselves for a chance to be strung along. Ive not been to an Interview in the last two years that didnt have 3 digit number of candidates through to second round.

But ATW really went too far with the "messing with lives" thing. I almost bought a house in Pwllheli (Because there was an extremely good buy at that moment that was sure to go) and almost handed my notice in (it is very lengthy so would have had to hand it in early to start with ATW in time for the training) as they convinced me that I had got the job for certain after I passed the entire selection process.
I could have ended up living in an house in the middle of nowhere with no job & still waiting for that job offer that never comes!

Back to Northern, they've now withdrawn an entire station in the last few months. Salford Crescent (despatch) was withdrawn, they also withdrew the booking office vacancy not so long ago too.

If anything else is withdrawn the station may look like Hattersley before long :(

How did that happen? Was it withdrawn due to being filled internally, or did they get it wrong that someone was leaving and they didn't?

Suspect if anyone asked them they would be told "change in business needs".

Well done mate!!! I got my rejection email today too! I really don't understand what Northern Rail want to hear in an application form, after being succesful once I've never passed another shortlisting!

I reckon to be honest there's so many applications coming in, they get to a certain number, and don't bother give any of the rest a look in, regardless of the standard of application.

Despite some of the staff up there being brilliant, I genuinely think their department is too small for purpose and cannot cope.

Stapling a £50 note to the back is becoming increasingly tempting.

Was this for Driving? I have heard nothing and heard they have not shortlisted yet! Apparantly there are 3 stages of shortlisting that the app forms are processed through! Incredible

It was a Customer Service Assistant at Oxford Road. I applied on the 15th of April 2011, and it is still listed as 'Online Testing Complete'

Probably already earmarked for internal candidates they've already picked. There's only a small complement at York and it's quite a sought after depot.

Its a conductors job and its not like drivers in the sense it seems to have a big turnover in recent years and a lot of new starters from the outside. There is at least one vacancy in the link so this one should be real

Well it turns out that after passing all parts of the selection process I have been put "on hold" again
How many times do I have to keep passing the whole thing before I get a job out of it
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Until I find out what keeps going wrong, I will continue banging my head against the wall!!!!!

My last psychometric test pass was October 2008. Valid for 5 years. When that expires, and I have to take it again, I can bang my head against the wall some more.
