Northern Rail Assessment Day

I'm sure lots of these questions have been answered before, so apologies about that, but I have an assessment day coming up and I just wanted to check a few things.

- The structured interview, is this basically the same sort of interview I've already had? The example interview?

- I've seen a few mentions of sites where you can practice some of the tests (group bourdon, dials etc.) but all the links seem to be dead. Does anyone know where I can practice these?

- I should wear a suit, right?

VicLine has put out some good info on the tests. Generally just do a search on this forum and you will find all you need.

This really is a hive of info and you've certainly done the right thing looking in here.

Structured interviews generally follow the same format - "tell me a time when...", so for a conductor's job it will include customer service, H+S, dealing with money, dealing with difficult situations etc.

And yes, I'd always wear a suit for an interview.

Thanks for the replies, it's for a driver position. I was surprised there was a another example interview, are they likely to be the same sort of questions? I think i used up all my relevant work experience examples at the last one.

Thought of another one. They say the Group Bourdon test could be written or could be on a computer. Is it likely to be one rather than the other, seems like there would be quite a difference between the two.

I'm going through the same process.
I have rarely found the need to post any questions as basically all the questions you could be asked in the DFFT, structured interview,trainability for rules, managers interview etc are already on this forum. There are links to group bourdon practise tests and numerous tips for the reactions test. So much so that I can't believe the TOCs don't bring in a new system. Basically with the info from this site there should be no surprises when you go into any of the tests.

I think the bottom line with the assesments is that you can prepare all you like but, they are testing core skills and abilities which you either have or haven't got.

Got my assessment coming up this week, I've been practicing a lot of the tests, but the one I'm struggling with is the mechanical knowledge. I did pretty bad on the test they gave me, so I've been trying to read up on this kind of thing, but really I'd like a place where I can do practice tests of this type of question. Can anyone suggest anywhere?

I feel I take it in a lot more if I can answer questions about something, rather than just reading info.

Hey, it's not until Friday. Any chance you've found anywhere to practice for the mechanical test? I'm struggling to find anything.

Hi Joe, think I sat my assessment (screen, lights etc) with you today and I was the first one to fail (or not reach Northern standard). Hope you passed, let me know. I have to wait 6 months to apply again but at least I do know my weakness/standard now.

Sorry to just jump into this thread...

congrats on passing, massive relief I bet.

Just wondering if northern rail still use the dials and cables test, using circles with 4 segments??

Commiserations to all that were not successful, it sounds like a difficult day. Hope I pass this time.

Hey, yeah we did the dials/cables test, I think it was probably the easiest test of the day, for me anyway, it was more about speed really.
