Northern Rail 158

Can anyone tell me is Northern Rail has loaned a 158 to East Midlands trains or if East Mildands has loaned a 158 to Northern Rail because, at Derby today, I saw this:



Someone care to explain this?

If it happened, if it happened permenantly, I would wonder what EMT would refurb it to......

Same as their other 158s, but they'd probably do it in house at Neville Hill.

No, as Northern don't need to do that.

Well, what a good bit of joined up thinking (excuse the pun).

Congratulations to both EMT and Northern for attempting to maintain some form of service, and possibly quite a unique one at that.

I know the Northern service would be the Leeds - Nottingham, but what was the EMT one?

Is it the Liverpool Norwich? Wondered if the were coupled up in Nottingham or Sheffield?

I imagine Nottingham - Leeds and Norwich - Liverpool would have run coupled from Nottingham - Sheffield, and visa-versa.

It does happen rarely. A GC 180 ran coupled to a HT 180 from King's Cross - Doncaster at one point.

Not totally unique - First Great Western & South West Trains do fairly regulary work together on diversions - either when the GWML is shut between Taunton & Exeter & FGWs HSTs take over the Yeovil Junc to Exeter section, or diverts & pairing of 158/159s between Salisbury & Bristol - as reccent as last month, where one of SWTs Bristol to Waterloo jobs ended up pairing with a FGW 158 on a Portsmouth bound service - due to a line problem around Westbury (Kettle i think)...

I may well be wrong, but I think that the 180's didn't run together in the end as they failed to couple up succesfully at Doncaster.

Your half right. Some did fail to couple and others didn't.

I think it may have happened (or been attempted...) a few times - think it happens due to pathing issues as opposed to diversionary routes

Yes I remember that wasn't it something along the lines of there were engineering works at iirc somewhere near Welwyn and there were limited paths due to One Lines each way being closed, so GC and HT merged their service between Doncaster-Kings Cross
