Just passed through Halifax and I'm sure I saw a coach painted in what looked like Northern colours, maybe a mark 2, through some trees. Is it some kind of training facility?

It's been there some time.
Ironically, it's more comfortable stock than the 14xs and 155s passengers have to use!

Northern, as well as others, spent £30,000 on repairs, restoration and repaints on the vehicle. Am I right in thinking it has Class 158 style seats inside??? I would go and have a look, but £9.95 just to see it is a bit expensive :(...

In my defence it was my first time to Halifax! I'm on a north country rover, was on my way to Preston to get a pendy to Carlisle, then returning on the s&c :)

Tht coach has been at Halifax since the early 1990's.
I was on a Ballast at Halifax in 1992 and it was there at that time, as we were parked across the track from it.

Sorry - I wasn't criticising you - simply just adding a bit of information. :D

Hope you enjoyed your Rover.
Some wonderful Pennine scenery around Halifax and the Calder Valley.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England

This is a "cunning plan" to recoup the £30,000 spent and at less than a tenner a time, Northern hope that no-one will notice.....by claiming its doing its bit for education.

Sorry that didn't read how I wanted it to, I didn't think you were!

I did enjoy it thanks:
Day 1, 158 to Hull, 170 to Leeds, 333 to Bradford Forster Sq, 155 to Harrogate, 150 to York, 221 to Darlington, IC225 to York and home
Day 2, same to Leeds, 158 to Preston, 390 to Carlisle, 158 to Leeds (via s&c) and home
Day 3, 158 to Scarborough, 185 to York, IC125 to Newcastle, 220 back to York, 158 to Hull and home
Day 4, 158 to Hull, 185 to Leeds, 158 to Bradford Interchange, 180 to Brighouse, 158 back to Leeds and home. Today went a bit wrong, my 321 leg was cancelled, and the 6th opportunity to get an XC HST was yet another double formed Voyager...

But its been good, especially given I bought the Rover with Delay Repay vouchers!!

One of the many reasons why I believe Lancashire is better then Yorkshire no matter what any one from White Rose country says, :p

One service which presents beautiful scenery is the Leeds to Blackpool service especially between Bradford Interchange and Blackburn, one thing I used to love as a kid was looking out for the Blackpool Lights :)

All the same as to OP, glad to hear you're enjoying yourself with the rover.

It has standard Mk2a seats inside with Northern moquette, I saw a photo online of the interior but I can't remember where. Either way, its better than the stuff out on the mainline.

Hmmm a sign of things to come? Is this what loco-hauled carriage services may look like when Northern finally succumb to ridiculous overcrowding on busy routes and are forced into bringing back unused carriages on loco-hauled relief services.

In a strange way I almost feel sad that the shunter won't get a run-around with its carriage as it faces the prospect of a lifetime trapped on a tiny section of track like a caged bird.

Where do people get the idea that there's a mass of unused stock and locos ready for use on stopping services which they were never appropriate for?!
