I notice this applies on the Barton on Humber branch too.
Also a lot of new CDS/CDR's on Northern flows from Leyland, good news for me
And as of the new fares round, there are first class fares from Leyland to Preston...where no first class accommodation is available...![]()
Chester -> Lancaster Off Peak Return, 8A any train, £39.80 (ATW)A completely unnecessary piece of non-simplification there.
It's used to be available on several trains throughout the day. These have become gradually reduced though, I can see only the 0625 from Leyland to Blackpool North for today.
I know it (off peak day returns) was part of Northerns contractual agreement but wasn't expecting to see them (off peak day returns) so soon.
Even then, that service (without looking at diagrams etc.) could be run by a 156.
I know that, I was just expanding on your comment about the decline in 1st class services. So? A Meridian could be replaced with a pair of sprinters on the Midland Mainline, does that mean they shouldn't offer First Class fares? The service has First Class accommodation. There's a procedure to follow of a train without any substitutes for it.
Some important questions:
1 What are the restrictions on the new Off-Peak Day Returns?
2 Do any of them cost less than the Anytime Day Single?
3 Are there to be any Off-Peak Day Singles?
4 Are there any changes to the price of existing fares?
Think the OP is the guy behind Chester le street station so wouldve got the update from Northern directly
Gorton to Manchester is going up from £2.10 to £2.60 - just under 25%. Northern can bugger off if they think I'm paying that each day - I'll just get the bus.Oh my God! Mauldeth Road to Manchester is going up by 23.8%! That's unbelievable. Well the savings from this are all wiped out anyway. What an outrageous increase.

£2.70, and only £2 more per weekly, but with a service every 3 minutes rather than 30!Which is how much?

So a 24% increase is OK because it's only £2? How much is a Zone 1 LU single on Oyster? I know, let's increase that by 24% overnight and see what happens. This is disgusting.

The bus takes 10 minutes, comes every 3, runs through the night, has free wifi, USB charging ports and half have leather seats. The train from Gorton to Manchester is normally a 142 and last service is 8pm on Sundays. Belle Vue doesn't have a single service on Sundays.£2.60 for an off-peak return for a 5 minute journey each way and you'll refuse to buy it. Knutsford to Mobberley is £3.50 return for a 5 minute journey each way when it's only 1tph - some people in Greater Manchester don't realise how low their fares are! I imagine the change is due to a cut in a subsidy provided by TfGM.
Everyone can manipulate stats in different ways, I could easily say that Northern are brilliant for reducing off-peak LEY<>PRE fares by 15.5%, which sounds like a lot, however that is actually only 70p...
I travel to the vicinities of both of those stations regularly, and am shocked that anyone bothers with Northern's ludicrous offering. It would need to be a significant discount on the bus fare to be worth bothering with. Costing more than the bus? Not a chance in hell.
Are they trying to get rid of their remaining customers in the region so that they can close their stations between the city centre and the Stockport boundary?
Maybe this isn't such a far fetced thought.
Don't forget the December 2017 changes to the stopping trains between Manchester, Huddersfield and Leeds. This will mean some of the intermediate stations will no longer have a train service to some of the other intermediate stations like they currently do.
The DfT supports this as it says there is a perfectly good local bus service which local people should use for local journeys between villages and adjacent stations, allowing the train to be better at moving people into the towns and cities, where it has an advantage over the bus.
Basically they say that as it stands at the moment both modes of public transport cannot do the same thing, so each one should specialise in what it is more suited to.
I haven't seen the price of something I buy regularly jump by 23.4% overnight before ever. It's unbelievable.
