That's the Copy Pit line, the Calder Valley line runs through Calderdale and follows the River Calder through the same valley.

Although just to confuse everybody, the river from Copy Pit summit down to Burnley and eventually the Ribble is also the River Calder, the Lancashire one.

I knew there was a Lancashire Calder and am familiar with it around Whalley where it is substantial but I didn't know its source was so near to the other Calder, they must be only five miles apart at their nearest?

A pointy-ended one and a non-pointy ended one if that helps :)

I’m more curious as to whether this is standard way of moving them as the 5A coaches and 397s are taken by rail, and that’s currently the only traffic on the Portishead line, one or two trains a month.

Much less than that, in fact. What hasn't been mentioned so far is that the Copy Pit line is actually following the Yorkshire Calder from Todmorden, while the line to Manchester is following the valley of its tributary Walsden Water.

The two River Calders actually share a watershed just a few yards from Copy Pit. There is a farm at this point on the A646 called Calderhead Farm, which I assume is still a farestage on the bus routes between Todmorden and Burnley.

The terminology for a non-driving motor vehicle is just that, motor - eg Motor Second (MS) (or Motor Standard might better fit modern parlance) as in a 195/1. Trailer vehicles are those with no traction capability, and are not necessarily non-driving vehicles, for example the 'sputnik'/blue square/conventional DMUs that weren't power twins - they had a DTS vehicle.

195/1s are denoted DMSL/MS/DMS, the most easily distinguishable differences are that the DMSL has a CET tank and no air compressor. Therefore a 195/1 has two air compressors and a /0 has just the one. The DMSL on a 195 has a black spot above the secondmans side light cluster (unless it is one of the few that were apparently painted on the wrong end...).

Just to back this up, there are only 3 trailers in a 9 car pendo and are labelled as such.

All 195 carriages are powered, so by 'trailer' I presume you mean a non-driving carriage, i.e. a centre carriage from a 195/1.

Non-driving vehicles are still called trailers, powered or not.

What have I started? I think we have here a situation of something colloquially called something, which, strictly speaking, it isn't. I can quite believe that non-driving motors are commonly referred to as 'trailers', even though Wikipedia, for instance, defines a trailer as an unpowered vehicle which is pulled by a powered vehicle. That, of course, immediately creates a problem in respect of rail-borne unpowered vehicles, which, as often as not, are pushed, rather than pulled, by the powered unit(s).
To further set the cat amongst the pigeons, it's my understanding that a 'catenary' isn't actually a catenary..

I went to P14 at Piccadilly just now to catch the 10.47 to Barrow but when 195122 arrived from the Airport it was caped due to a ‘train fault’. :{

195122 has not been previously reported in service. It's appearance does support the notion that 195 operation is going to be expanded from Monday - perhaps before, who knows.
This 'door' thing is beyond a joke, it should have been sorted out weeks ago.

What percentage of the Class 195/0 and Class 195/1 are likely to be resident in the North East as part of the Northern franchise.
None, the 158 fleet is being upgraded to 'Connect' standard for services in the NE region. The standard being new seats and seat reservation system.

Class 195s will visit Leeds on the Chester service however.

Yes, it was mentioned in the Northern Pacer withdrawal thread that the cascade caused by new 195s will see extra 156s and 158s heading to Heaton to replace 142s there. .

I must say I'm not looking forward to all the Airport-Lime Street services going over to 195s on Monday. There's enough single 156s turning up in their place at the moment as it is.

It then ran ECS to Barrow. According to RTT the 1353 Barrow - Airport and 1634 Airport - Barrow are being cancelled (presumably in consequence of 195122's failure). Does no-one keep any spare trains these days?

Sorry if this has been mentioned before (I did try to see if it had but only checked back a few pages) but aren't these units going to do a lot of miles under wires and, if so, shouldn't they have at least been bi-modes?

Yes they will and yes they probably should, but cost and lead time are the order of the day. Northern is a heavily subsidised franchise so the cheapest possible stock (and smallest / fewest possible units) had to be ordered to justify the expenditure. Bimodes would not only have been more expensive but would also have been seen to take longer to provision (something which has been proven false in practice but they wouldn't have known that at the time). That some proportion of the routes the 195s will serve are already electrified from start to finish is a bit of a travesty really. I don't know if that's their long-term intention.

One thing I didn't think to ask is, why did it run to Barrow? If it had a problem which couldn't be sorted out on the spot should it not have gone to Newton Heath? It makes me wonder if the problem was technical at all, especially in view of the speed at which the remaining two journeys on the diagram were cancelled. The only reason I can think for it going to Barrow is that it is where the unit would have finished if the diagram had been completed as scheduled.
Another thing which seems odd, the ECS movement didn't feature a stop at Preston for a crew change. It did feature being sidelined into the Barton & Broughton loop for about fifteen minutes, but that was to let a late running Virgin to pass.
