Which they shouldn't be doing, although it's become quite a regular occurance; the centre cars were explicitly for use on York - Blackpool services.

From 2007-2008 3-car 158s were the norm on Blackpool-York, but I think Northern claimed that Nottingham-Leeds, which started in December 2008, would need the third car as much as the aforementioned would, so now it appears to be a roughly 50:50 split on each service between 2-car and 3-car sets.

If you could send Pendolinos & IC225s via the Pennines, I would want Stockport to Stalybridge electrifying as it would be more direct via Macclesfield than via Warrington Bank Quay.

Due north, and three to the left.
This has taken a lot of people at Network Rail, TPE and Northern by surprise. Network Rail were looking at TransPennine electrification and if the nod was given it was pencilled in for Control Period 6 which is post 2018 and would have rolled on nicely from the NorthWest Electrification.

However a few phone calls today gave that its York-Leeds-Huddersfield-Salybridge-Picc/Vic that's being wired and brought forward to CP5 (2014-2018) and tied into the Northern Hub works.

For TPE this will allow three of the proposed six trains per hour over the core route to go electric. Northern are saying nothing more than Vic-Huddersfield and Huddersfield-Leeds would probably go electric and possibly Leeds-York stoppers.

As for rolling stock, displaced 317s, 321s and 365s from FCC were mentioned several times.

Undoubtedly things will change but as long as it happens, the glut of spare EMUs created by Thameslink and Crossrail will cascade into glut of spare DMUs and hopefully, bye bye Pacers.

Do I need to point out that if TPE N gets electrified fully exld. Scarbrough it could well be the case that Blackpool N - York - Scarbough will end up being Class 185 operated anyway? Same for the Calder Valley Semi-Fasts via Bradford Interchange (also candidates to extend to Scarbrough)

You can certainly make this [valid] point, but the phrase 'Do I need to point out....' does make you sound pretty supercilious and could well rub other posters up the wrong way.........

Did they mention if it was NR's proposed works for TPE N Electrification that are going through, or a watered down version?

Here's an idea.

Could 1 of the 2 Liverpool - Newcastle tph opperated by 350's be extended onto Edinburgh to provide an hourly service at the local stations in Northumberland north of Morpeth?

Have all the reasons why Transport Scotland don't think this is necessary (as discussed a few weeks back) suddenly gone away then?

Please excuse my ignorance but as I am not that well familiarised with lines in the Northern area, would someone be able to provide me with a map showing which lines are to be electrified? Thanks.

the areas in West Yorks that need electrifying are:

Leeds-Knottingley-Doncaster
Leeds-Hull
Selby-Doncaster
Doncaster-Gilberdyke
Leeds-York via Harrogate
Neville Hill-Colton Junction
Leeds-Huddersfield via Halifax
Halifax-Victoria
Mirfield-Leeds via Kirkgate
Horbury Junction-Meadowhall
Moorthorpe-Sheffield

I agree that they should certainly do Harrogate as an add-on. Put an end to all the silliness.

But that would only be needed if GNWR started. It was the 'as opposed to Warrington' that confused me.

There are two sensible route to Stalybridge from the WCML...

One via Warrington BQ, Earlstown, Newton-Le-Willows, Eccles, Manchester Victoria - Stalybridge
The one he was mentioning for additional electrification was making use of the line via Denton instead to be able to route the service by

Stoke / Crewe, Stockport, Denton, Guide Bridge, Stalybridge.

Not sure that's correct...

3-cars still appear on Blackpool-York's, but now some are seen on Selby-Wakefield Westgate (via the world)...

Fair enough.

Yes, but Blackpool-York went from almost exclusive 3-car operation to about a 50:50 split with 2-car operation. 3-car operation on the Selby-Wakefield Westgate trains amazes me.

When I was in Garforth in March about half of the Blackpool-York services were operated by 3 car 158s - the Selby-Wakefield service was a 142!

Good news, glad to see it confirmed. Whilst I'm a left-leaning voter, I have to admit that the Tories seem to do better in terms of infrastructure (arguments about privatisation to one side...).

The logical solution would be to switch which one goes via Leeds. There will probably be a ECML timetable recast before TPE electrification is done.

Agreed. Running a Middlesbrough - York - Leeds - Sheffield - (Birmingham etc) service and an Edinburgh - Newcastle - York - Doncaster - Sheffield (Birmingham etc) service would be much better, it'd give a faster Edinburgh service to Birmingham etc, it'd free up seats on the "via Leeds" service (as the Scottish passengers wouldn't be on it), it gets my vote.

Just holdeth thy horses on 'Hull and Middlesbrough Not Being Wired' We don't know what is being done yet, if it's the Network Rail plan, it does include Hull.

Agreed. We seem to be getting ahead of ourselves here when we don't know what has been promised. I sincerely hope Hull is wired, but people need to bear in mind that the initial Lancashire electrification announcement was only for Chat Moss (the Bolton announcement came after, to get further publicity).

Yes I see BB got just Phase 1 to start with - very sensible!
The Hub spend is not approved yet is it - other than Ordsall Lane

Funny how a couple of weeks ago we were talking about the Northern Hub as being scaled down (reduced to just the Ordsall Curve). Now, the wind changes and the Government are suddenly a lot more ambitious...

I can only immagin it's a matter of common sense that Guide Bridge to Stalybridge and Leeds to York will be electrified as part of the project?

Can't assume anything. I'm not sure that Guide Bridge - Stalybridge would be done (it won't have any passenger service if all TPE North services are going to Victoria).

And there's another problem.
We are assuming "tick" it's approved, followed by money to pay for it.
However, it looks like a conditional approval, dependent on private sector Pension Funds being willing to make the investment - ie it is not government money.
I think this one, like previous PFI projects, will run and run before we can be sure it will happen.

I agree. I'm not sure about the rights/wrongs of using Pension Fund money to prop up Government spending (its a bit like Labour's raids on the National Lottery to spend on things). Pension Funds are there to get the best rate of return for their members, they aren't designed as a "slush fund" for the state. Great if they get a rate of return on it, everyone wins, but if they don't get a good return on their money then questions will be asked...

Add Micklefield-Hull, Temple Hirst-Selby and Doncaster-Gilberdyke. That has the added advantage of freeing up a lot of 180s from Hull Trains. I reckon that this would be far more likely than the old Midland lines, at least until they do the MML (whenever that is).

Four?

the areas in West Yorks that need electrifying are:

Leeds-Knottingley-Doncaster
Leeds-Hull
Selby-Doncaster
Doncaster-Gilberdyke
Leeds-York via Harrogate
Neville Hill-Colton Junction
Leeds-Huddersfield via Halifax
Halifax-Victoria
Mirfield-Leeds via Kirkgate
Horbury Junction-Meadowhall
Moorthorpe-Sheffield

We have plenty busy lines that need electrification (e.g. I've mentioned the Harrogate loop recently), before we start wiring routes with no passenger service (or virtually none) like Knottingley - Doncaster (which only gets a handful of GC services that would still need diesel power anyway).

The only Northern services in Sheffield longer than two coaches tend to be the three car 144s (which are more like two coach Sprinter than a three coach one). The three car 158s tend to be on the Calder Vale services to Manchester if they aren't on the Calder Vale services to Blackpool.

Have all the reasons why Transport Scotland don't think this is necessary (as discussed a few weeks back) suddenly gone away then?

I'm glad someone else has remembered this!

AIUI its a twelve hour diagram that involves a couple of return Leeds - Manchester trips plus one "Grand Tour" trip to Wakefield via Huddersfield, which tends to get everything from Pacers to 155s to 158s (some with 153 attached).

Notionally the bigger DMUs (e.g. the three coach 158s or the 155/153 combos) are timed for peak hour services through Leeds, but it does mean Pacers to Manchester at some times whilst Wakefield gets 158s.

ITV News agreed.

They did find a nice refurbished 156 for Cameron and the delegates to travel on between Manchester Piccadilly and Newton Heath. They even got the 156 on the adjacent platform to the Pendolino he came up on. Northern only have 11 fully refurbished 156s.

What services would need to do that though? :|

It's also a diversionary route between Stockport and Salford.

Talking about diversionary routes Wakefield Westgate to Huddersfield would make sense. It's only a short stretch and would allow electric services to run on TPE when the route via Dewsbury is closed.

The diversion would be Huddersfield - Wakefield Kirkgate - Normanton - Woodlesford - Leeds. Otherwise you'd need to reverse up the single chord to Westgate.

Given how hard it is to get basic lines wired, I'm not convinced by a lot of the suggestions on here to electrify diversionary routes with precious little service (e.g. if the frequency over Calder Vale isn't sufficient to electrify, and the self contained Harrogate loop isn't busy enough to electrify then EMUs on Stockport - Stalybridge seems a bit fanciful!)

The HS1 concession is owned by a couple of Canadian pension funds isn't it? They must think infrastructure is a sound investment...

It is.

Up and running infrastructure is the kind of thing that pension funds love, there's a secure income, they are fairly safe, they can invest for the long term at a stable/ unspectacular rate. A lot of pension funds are invested in shopping centres etc for similar reasons. Investing in the HS1 infrastructure (after it was up and running) was a fairly safe bet.

However putting pension scheme money into brand new projects is another story, thats the kind of speculation (given uncertain costs etc) that doesn't suit pension funds.

Fair enough if the Government are giving them guarantees - it could be a pretty cheap way of getting round Government borrowing restrictions - but its odd if they are speculating money on uncertain projects.

On another subject, should the Stillington line be wired, thus providing an alternative & very useful electrified diversionary route?

Without swearing, what happens if we end up sh*t creek without a paddle?

Has Cameron considered the downside versus the upside?

Yes but to make use of the line under normal circumstances you'd want a EMU running Wakefield Westgate to Huddersfield, opposed to having a DMU running it.

Surely instead of wiring all the diversionary routes they are just going to run the overnight services with DMUS still... if 185s operate other routes still within the TPE franchise then they will get put on late night services that get diverted hence the government doesnt need to wire the diversions. Cheaper for government so surely that is what will happen.

There's not likely to be TransPennine Express franchise by the time electrification is complete.

I suggested Huddersfield-Wakefield because it's a short stretch and another service can switch to a EMU if it's done (assuming the Grand Tour is split.)

Nobody seems to know for sure. All that has been reported so far is "Manchester to Leeds." Which should mean Guide Bridge to Leeds via Huddersfield, and probably Leeds (Neville Hill) to York (Colton Junction) but who knows what else might be included.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Which line do you mean?
Stockton to Ferryhill (approximately half way between Darlington and Durham) via, erm, Stillington. Not a hope in hell of it being electrified as part of TPE, or of any other scheme in my lifetime, if you ask me.
