I didn’t have long to wait before I was off on another bash. This time I was not on my own and on a cold Wednesday night I headed off to Plymouth for my first Night Riviera trip of the year. My mate met me at Plymouth where 57603 arrived from Penzance. Although we had been in contact with each other we hadn’t seen each other since October! Just after Exeter we decided to call it a night and got our heads down. A few hours kip would be needed. Tonights trip up from the Westcountry would see us go via Melksham for the 240 mile trip. We arrived just after 5am and we were off pretty much straight away.
It was absolutely freezing. We decided that South Eastern areas would be productive for both of us so made our way to London Bridge. 21319/21320 were had to Royal Oak as my mate needed them before 21499/21500 were had in the other direction to Baker Street where we head down to the Jubilee for 96027 and 96032. At Southwark we bail and head up to Waterloo East. It wasn’t long until something came in that I certainly needed and off we went to London Bridge with 465913, 465912 and 466039.
Hither Green was next up on 466041, 465237 and 465007. The only thing we saw here was 66117. It was back to London Bridge on 465926 and 465918 before double winners 375916 and 375826 to Waterloo East were had. For the first time today we had to Charing Cross on 465024 and 466031. For the first time (since the tube) it was all duds for me (my mate would have needed one of them at least or we would not have got on) with 465176 and 465031 to Waterloo East. Behind that was 375704 and 375830 which were had for the mile to London Bridge.
At this point my mate was going to head out to c2c land for the 387/3s. I didn’t need them as I got them last week. I decided I would go for DLR and we would meet up there once he had done the two diagrams he needed. So 96113 and 96114 were had up to Canada Water before 378153 up to Shadwell. I would now (despite the biting cold) fester. 28 minutes later I was in the warm…….for 1 minute! 75, 95 and winner 63 took me 56 chains to Limehouse! During that time I had seen a girl (she wasn’t even 16 apparently) kicking off with everyone and I have no idea why. It held up one the train she got off (which in turn delayed everything coming back out from the centre of London). Whatever it was she was kicking off about, not even her two friends could calm her down about!
Another 20 odd minutes later and I saw another unit I needed. Just needed to wait for it to return. Before it came back I saw two more units I needed! This was going very well! So half an hour after my last encounter with warmth, 25, 97 and winner 85 arrived and it was onto Westferry. Three minutes later I was on 02, 32 and 70! With that the DLR was cleared! I could no longer feel my feet or fingers but it was finally done! My mate had caught up with me by this point and we started to make our way to Lewisham for breakfast! Annoyingly for me he wanted to bus stop our way there to see if he could get winners. He got six in the end but I was cold and hungry! I couldn’t moan too much though. I had just cleared the fleet and he needed 20 odd still (although I will add, he has cleared, barrring the new stuff arriving, the entire rail fleet in the country and is on his second time round!). I won’t list all the units we had to Lewisham here but was a fair few. I needed them for the year though!
Once at Lewisham it was off to the Spoons for a large breakfast and celebratory pint (we had been up for 5 hours after all!)! With that devoured it was back to the station, this time back to South Eastern! The first train in contained winner 465011 being led by 465012. We took this to Blackheath were we had just enough time to get to the other side before double duds 465241 and 465185 back to Lewisham. We then made a rookie mistake! We saw a train in and we jumped on it with no idea what it was or where it was going! It was dud 465007, which we had had earlier and wasn’t stopping at London Bridge! Doh! We bailed at St Johns and went back to Lewisham on 456902 and 465043. It was then another set of duds (well for me) consisting of 465925 and 465930 to London Bridge . 465017 was had to Waterloo East. Finally a winner in 375709 led by 375704 turned up and it was back to London Bridge.
We weren’t here long and we were heading away from the centre of London once more. This time to Orpington with 375701 and 375917. We then headed back to the centre on 375816 and 375924. We bailed at London Bridge before 376024 and 376024 were had to Lewisham. From here a couple moves we made has me wondering why we did them. 465043 and 465902 took us to Hither Green and 465925 and 465930 back to London Bridge. We had been on these units earlier in the day so I have no idea what we were doing!
Anyway, back at London Bridge 376022 and 376021 took us to Waterloo East. next up was 465912, 465923 and 466024 to London Bridge. It was back to Waterloo East on 375605, and 375706. We had seen something going in we both needed so a returning (an incident meant it got turned back earlier than it should have) 375701 and 375917. Double winners 376028 and 376016 were had to Waterloo East and then a train of duds consisting of 465244, 465239 and 466025 to London Bridge. The next set of moves got repetitive but needed to be done!
375910, 375813 London Bridge - Waterloo East
465933, 465919 Waterloo East - Charing Cross
375614, 375802 Charing Cross - Waterloo East
375618, 375919 Waterloo East - Charing Cross
465920, 466001 Charing Cross - London Bridge
465180, 465041 London Bridge - Charing Cross
376016, 376028 Charing Cross - London Bridge
375916, 375615 London Bridge - Waterloo East
376018, 376019 Waterloo East - Charing Cross
465030, 465161 Charing Cross - Waterloo East
At this stage me and my mate split. I had got some gen on the potential location of some units in SWT land so decided to go and have a look. He stayed in the London Bridge area whilst I wondered over to Waterloo. I got onto 450570 and 450122. The guard was announcing something as I got on but missed it. Turns out there was signalling problems but we left pretty much right time. We got held a little and I decided I would bail at Vauxhall and wait there for my train. It meant a longer fester but didn’t want to risk the delays being worse towards Clapham (turns out they weren’t and I would have made it!). Eventually 458514 and 458507 arrived and I got on. One down!
Next up was 458508 and 458532 which I took out to Clapham. Once again I waited. But I waited on the bridge as there was no wind up there! Was still cold mind! Eventually my late running train arrived and 458521 and 458506 took me onto Waterloo. That was the 458s cleared once more!
I then made my way back to Southwark where I met my mate and we headed on to Baker Street on the following moves,
96042, 96107 Southwark - Green Park
96104, 96017 Green Park - Bond Street
96086, 96095 Bond Street - Baker Street
That was a haul with no effort! We went to the Spoons and got dinner before we walked back to Paddington for our train home. First class was enjoyed and we reflected on a good day! I had finally cleared the DLR. I had cleared the 458s once more. In total I bagged another 31 winners which takes me to 81 for the year so far (more than I could have dreamed of to be honest!). Over the trip 571 miles were travelled. No new shacks but I have a few trips in the pipeline that will see a few scratched soon.
