Sounds like a good trip! I don't approve of the pacers, but I certainly do of the trams - the Metrolink is a great system.

With the f.o.s.s rover do u have to use 3 running days like Monday to Wednesday or can you travel Mon then Thurs Fri?

As Kite as already mentioned, you have 7 days in which you can use three days of your choice.

Which should be easy enough to get on a GM Wayfarer with 3 trains an hour

Yes. We were going to try and do it but just ran out of time.

An excellent read as always! I didn't know there was an evening service at Ardwick as well!

I trust the walk from Marple was enjoyable, looked like it would be so from my brief visit to that area not too long ago.

Yes, 1805 service which was good timing for the brewery. Gave enough time to try all the beers before it closed.

Was a nice walk. Pity we didn't do it all. I was up for it, the missus not so much! She'd already done a load of walking that morning!

Sounds like a good trip! I don't approve of the pacers, but I certainly do of the trams - the Metrolink is a great system.

Love the tram system in Manchester. I don't mind pacers, but even if I didn't, I wouldn't have been able to do everything I did if I didn't use them, because that's all that turned up!

Just caught up with this Noddy. Congrats on Polesworth. You shack scratchers are maniacs, getting up at silly o'clock to get a station done. However I doff my cap to thee for having the dedication to do so.

Congrats on clearing the units you Did, I've forgotten them all you got but clearing LM and ATW is not to be sniffed at and the Anglia 90's. So wanna do the VTEC turn.

As usual a great read. Look forward to reading more.

Is it a set week or any running 7 days?

So could I use it sat/sun/Monday

The only time I get three days is weekends where there's bank holiday Monday.

Sorry if it's already been said, just trying to plan my time off.

It's valid for any 7 days, so if you buy one on the Saturday you need to use it by the following Friday.

The third of my GWR Jan Sale ticket trips, this time to Reading. I was not feeling it this morning at all. I was tired and wondered whether this was a trip too far. I had pretty much used all my days off from work to hit the rails in some way or an other since the turn of the year, and with work lately being quite laborious had it finally taken its toll? Either way I had paid so had to go! I had a plan to clear the shacks on the North Downs line, hopefully picking up a couple of red pens as I did it (although there was every chance I wouldn’t!). Off I went to Plymouth station, just before 0500. I popped to Pumpkin for a tea when I got there and then went out to board the HST with 43124 and 43070 in charge. My mood got worse when I realised I had left my earphones at home and my portable battery pack! I had charger but knew after the HST to Reading I wouldn’t see a plug again until the HST back home! My phone battery was on 99% at the moment but I knew I’d be using the phone during the day! Not much to see on the way with only Westbury providing anything of note (70801, 70808 and 66149).

At Reading I headed over to the East Bay platforms. I had already got my ticket and boarded 166212 for the first time that day. We were soon off and first stop for me would be Chilworth. An eight minute wait for 166202 and I was heading west once more, this time to North Camp. Another shortish wait and 166208 arrived and it was off to Shalford. One thing I noticed as I was doing these short leaps was the lack of footbridges at stations on this route. This could be my undoing later in day so I changed my next move slightly (knowing I had a bit of flex in day to still achieve what I wanted).

166212 by now returned and I boarded it. I was going to bail at Farnborough North but the lack of bridge and a +1 meant I would not make the move I wanted to make. I instead bailed at North Camp once more and then waited for 166202 and took this to Dorking Deepdene. I had a 15 minute wait for the train behind (166210) which would take me on to Reigate. A five minute wait here for 166202, again, and this time to Betchworth. Now for my longest wait of the day so far, 34 minutes. I took a wonder away from the station but there was only a busy road going. The station was not really in Betchworth and I headed back to the station.

Eventually 166212 returned and I took this to Redhill. I spotted a pair of 73s and got a rubbish photo.

20170301-Redhill-73136 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

I got back on 166212 and this time went off to Gomshall. 166208 arrived ten minutes later and I took this to Dorking Deepdene once more. I had a bit of time to get to Dorking West and stopped of at KFC for some food on the way. It had started to rain now too which wasn’t nice. I felt better after a Zinger Tower Meal and carried on to an inspiring Dorking West. I was entertained for the ten minutes more I had to wait, by the crane in the scrap yard next to the station moving stuff from one place to another!

Eventually 166208 came in and it was onto Crowthorne. 166205 (a different unit!) arrived and it was onto Blackwater. Now I needed to look at my plan to make it as effective as possible. I got on 166213 heading the other way, this time to Wokingham for +4. It was then onto 166208, this time to Farnborough North for my longest wait of the day!

I had an hour now thanks to the level crossing (no bridge) and wandered into Farnborough itself. I popped into Saisnburys for a choccy bar and then made my way back to the station. I saw a mini bus reverse into a BMW and then drive off without stopping. The driver of the BMW was in it at the time and was not happy!

166212 arrived soon enough and it was onto Sandhurst. I had another hour now! This time (and it was raining again!) I went to the nearby pub for a pint! Had to kill time somehow! I was in a good mood though. I had seen 166209 heading East and it should be my next train! Sure enough an hour later 166209 arrived and I boarded it all the way to Reading.

I boarded 450039 and 450005 already in the station and we were soon off. I bailed at Winnersh Triangle and made my way through the rain to the other side. 450096 and 450560 arrived and I got off at Earley. My final shack on the North Downs line! Once more I was over to the other side for time killing move to Wokingham on 450091 and 450118. Bonus, I got a winner on it too!

At Wokingham a short wait ensued and it was 450103 and 450007 took me back to Reading. I had an hour and twenty minutes so went off to get a drink and some food. The pub opposite the station (Oxford Social Club I think it was) was very nice and then it was to Burger King for food.

Soon enough it was time to head home. 43030 and 43027 arrived and was a good run to Plymouth, arriving 2 minutes early. My phone was down to 8% battery after a hammering during the day so that got plugged in straight away! In the end I enjoyed the day after my non convincing start. 2 winning trains and 14 new shacks after 572 miles traveled.

That looked like a good day out Noddy (not for the BMW driver though), I've used a couple of the stations you mentioned although it was years ago.
What was the train sandwiched between the 73s?

Not sure to be honest! Didn't have long to get the phot before it left! Some sort of engineering equipment!

Sounds like a good day there! How many 166s do you now need?

Top job on the shack clearance there good sir! I know all about getting the same units all day on that line, having done so a few months back myself!

One!

Congrats on clearing the North Downs Line for shacks :)

Thanks

It was frustrating and I was so relieved when one of the peak ones they chucked out was required! :)

Congratulations on clearing all those shacks.
It's always a good feeling to complete a line.

The bus/car incident reminds me of an incident I once observed at Leamington Spa.
A van was parked in a bay in the car park, an open topped sports comes in and tries to pull in to the adjacent space.
Instead he hit the rear of the van.
Van driver gets out and walks round, takes a look at the bump and walks up to the car driver.
"Hold on, I'll just clear my car out of the way and then give you my details" says the car driver.
He straightens up, then puts his foot down and shoots out of the car park, leaving the van driver literally scratching his head!

My final GWR Jan sale tickets were for a trip to the capital once more. Originally planned as a solo trip a mate’s rest days got changed and he was now free too. A more sedate start to the day saw me leave the house just after 0630. I drove to the station today as I couldn’t face the walk. It was more the walk back nearer midnight I couldn’t face (I could just tell I wouldn’t want to be facing it!). 43181 and 43164 were in charge and we left bang on time. I had found a table and plonked my self down. It was light enough to see what was going on already. As we passed Laira I saw nothing to note and expected the same at Tavvy Junction.

On the odd occasion there is something there. Today was the turn of 70812. I wrote it it down and then thought “I’ve spotted that wrong!”. I knew Colas had ordered more but I was unaware of any of the new ones arrival! A question mark went into my notes.

My mate joined the train at Exeter and onwards we went. We didn’t see anything at Exeter Riverside and to be honest I forgot to even look at Taunton Fairwater Yard until it was too late! Theale was the first place we spotted anything of note, 60091. At this stage I also got some Gen and 70812 was at Tavvy Junction! A rare winner for sight!

After Reading no fewer than nine 66s and a couple of 57s were spotted en route to Paddington. None were required for sight. At Paddington I went off to get my travel card and it was on to the Cross. Sadly the next four moves produced nothing

21525, 21526 Paddington - Edgware Road
21538, 21537 Edgware Road - Great Portland Street
21026, 21025 Great Portland Street - Euston Square
21495, 21496 Euston Square - King’s Cross St Pancras.

It was then off to see what was on the Finsbury Park stoppers. first up winning 365503. That’ll do. My mate needed it too so that was a bonus. At Finsbury Park the next Kings Cross train was a while away so we did a fill in move on 313134 and 313035 to Harringay. 313042 took us back.

A few minutes later 365521 and 365534 came in with a winner for each of us on it! Once back at Kings Cross I spotted 365524 in the station. I needed that! My next move was sorted then! My mate didn’t need anything and he decided that he would head to where we were going to spend most of the day, London Bridge. We separated then and off I went to Finsbury Park once more on 3655524. 387117 bought me back and with nothing else required in sight it was time to follow my mate towards South London.

I headed to the Northern Line and winners 51565 and 51566 arrived. I decided that I would see what was behind too and bailed at Old Street. Duds 51670 and 51671. Ah well I got two units. I was supposed to meet Dave at London Bridge but he got the timings for something wrong and we rearranged to meet at East Croydon. Dud 377443 took me there. En route I spotted 66770, 59102 and 66125. 377212 and 377438 were boarded as my mate needed one of them and off to Clapham we went.

Having ended up not being where we wanted to be we jumped on 450096, 450012 and 450083 to Waterloo. We then walked to Waterloo East. I also said that unless I needed to be somewhere I was only getting on what I needed! After an hour and bit of nothing winning, finally I got one! 375827 and 375803 took us to London Bridge. I didn’t even have a chance to look at the screens for the next train before I spotted 376017 and 376019. “see ya in a bit” I shouted to Dave as I jumped on. This was more like it! I took them to Waterloo East. The next few moves produced this

465191, 465235, 466005 Waterloo East - London Charing Cross
375702, 375902 London Charing Cross - Waterloo East
375916, 375825 Waterloo East - London Bridge

We ended up at Waterloo East at the same time and both caught the last one for our next move, 171s, hopefully. We went over to Platform 10 but I didn’t need any of the three on the train. Dave did so off he went. I did spot a required 377 so went for that. 377156 and 377151 were had to New Cross Gate. 377428 and 377404 a few minutes later and I was back at London Bridge. I still had time before the next Uckfield train. I popped up to the through platforms to see 376013 and 376004. That’ll do to Waterloo East. I had to jump on whatever was next out though which was 466017, 465033 and 465177. Not complaining! Next up was a winning 171! Thats what I wanted. 171202 was it so it was a little wedged but no matter. I text Dave to let him know what was on it as he needed it too. We briefly saw each other at East Croydon as I got off and he got on.

Now to get back to London Bridge. Luckily I didn’t need the next 171 (I wouldn’t have made it) out from London Bridge as Dave knew what was on it. 377471 and 377135 was the next London Bridge train which I took. Another move to Waterloo East and back saw me get 465044 and 465020 and then 465161 and 465163.

Now to go and see what the next 171 diagram was. The train was a ‘tad’ longer than the last one I caught! 10 car vs 2 car! 171802, 171730 and 171804 with the middle being the winner! Only 171201 was now required to clear the class. I hadn’t even seen it although apparently it worked that morning in the area. My attention next turned to temporarily formed 377342. I got some gen of its workings so I looked at where I could intercept it.

Once at East Croydon it was outside to the trams. 2546 was had down to Church Street. A short walk round the corner to Centrale for 2563 up to West Croydon. I had a minute to get to the platform before 377342, 377317 and 377132 rolled in. This was had all the way into Victoria. It was then a brisk walk for the 1830 departure to Brighton. 387212, 387216 and 387222 were all winners on this hop to Clapham. I decided I would be trying to do this move for the next few times in London to boost my 387/2 numbers. I’ve had five now!

It was then over to the Victoria bound platforms. A train was already in. 377622 and 377602. I needed 622 so that would do. It was then down to the tube where 21564 and 21563 took me onto Paddington. I’d already text Dave and said I was getting a BK. He had gone for a pie and chips and just as my food was given to me he arrived. Good timing! It was then onto our train worked by 43122 and 43094.

23 winners today was a good return. Slowly but surely London’s needs are dwindling. Considering I am avoiding the 700s at the moment which accounts for the greatest of my heavy rail needs I don’t think I am doing too badly. If I ignore Thameslink, South Eastern is still my most need TOC followed by Southern.

After 560 miles I finally returned to Plymouth. I was home five minutes later!

Sounded like a productive day in London :)

You will soon be like me in needing not really a lot in London (or like Keith who needs hardly anything apart from 700s)

Noddy - That was a good day up in the smoke with a nice bit of variety thrown in . Nice bit of jam in getting those 171s including 171202, my last one!

Kite - You'd be surprised as to what I need around London. Excluding things like 700s and retractioned 455s & 465s, I am still chasing down 25 units and three classes stick out like a sore thumb accounting for 18 out of those 25 - 165/0, 350 & 387/2. The 165/0s in particular are pure laziness on my part!

The fact you need much at all surprises me Keith, you have reminded me that I need to deal with my last Chiltern shacks!

Next time I am there I will probably do a similar thing to what I did to look for the final one. I could keep an eye on what was happening whilst still picking up winners so it was quite good.

I think it was 171202 i fell on for a mandatory move in December from London Bridge to Croydon.

I can't believe I need less London based units than the legend of Keith

Yes but Kite, you've had a lot more opportunity than the Grand Master of Bashing in recent months! I believe Keith is doing the 455s and 465s again as they're being retractioned, so it's a bit different!

Yeah, accept that there'll be folk out there needing less than me around the smoke now given that the weekend evening trips are not happening at the moment although I live in hope that that it's not a near-permanent cessation of after-work hostilities. And now that we have literally just passed the Spring Equinox, my first long distance trip of the year cannot be far off.

But, Kite, thinking about your London needs - does your "less than 25" include the Underground as well?

Not at the moment ;)

Excluding the 700s & GWR 387s not yet entered service (140+), out of London I need 3x 321s, 1x 332 (out of service), 9x 395s, 1 x 390, 1x 91, 2x VTEC 43s, 9x GWR 43s.

Kite, so your needs are considerably less than me for National Rail stuff as a good deal of yours are only available outside the travelcard zones and even the 332 & 395s cannot be hit using a travelcard.

You can use a travelcard to knock off the 332s, just travel between Heathrow Terminal 5 & Heathrow Central ;)

But as my last is 332014 which is currently enjoying the Old Oak Common sunshine with parts removed, I doubt I will be getting it any time soon. Similar my last 3, 321s are currently away (I believe) in Doncaster for new motors.

I have a plan for those 395s, mainly linear hops on a Sunday to get them down to a more manageable level before targeting them on a Friday evening

A great trip to London - getting so many duds on Southeastern would really irritate me at present - I need loads and loads of stuff up in that area.

It was that time of the year again, my yearly trip away with my dad! A long time in the planning, most of this was decided and some of it booked before Xmas! I ended up with the Friday off work through an unexpected super long shift that saw me finally get home at 0430 hours! That meant I didn’t go in for my normal shift and forced myself up by 1100 after a few hours kip! I got a load of stuff done and got ready. That evening my parents came up and along with my wife we all went out for a dinner. After dinner it was back home to pick up the bags for the five days ahead.

We arrived at the station with 15 minutes before the sleeper would arrive. Tonight it was 57602 in charge, my lowest mileage GWR 57. By the end of the journey it would be 200 short of 1000 but a long way off 605 on 4667 miles! We checked into our cabin and decided that we would go to sleep asap. Normally we’d go to the lounge car for a drink before but we decided against that. Fine by me, I was exahausted with the lack of sleep in the last 24 hours finally catching up with me!

We arrived into Paddington on time. We had been given our bacon bap and tea about 30 mins before arrival so we ready to be off once we pulled into the station. It was then over to Hammersmith station. We literally just missed a train (and that’s because we were checking our oyster balances which was a waste of time as we both had enough!). Worked out well though. Before our next train a winner in the form of 21521 and 21522 came in heading to Hammersmith. We got on and bailed at Royal Oak for the next set 21505 and 21506 all the way through to Kings Cross. A reasonable start to the day. I had better get used to not much red pen action for the first part of this trip! It was a trip of two halves! A plan and then no plan! All will be revealed!

Once at the Cross we went up to get our FONE tickets. The ticket office wasn’t open until 0600 so we had a few minutes to wait. Once we got them we headed to our train. 91109 was our train and nothing else I needed was about so wasn’t that upset.

We were off on time and as we passed Bounds Green I spotted the BLS charter HST being dragged through the depot. A mate was on this but we flashed by so didn’t see him, not that I expected too to be honest! A handful of 66s were spotted at Peterborough but none I needed. Our first stop was Retford. A new shack for me we had about 50 mins for breakfast. This required a trip to do the spoons which was pleasant enough.

With that done it was back to Retford and then down to the lower level station. 144011 arrived soon enough and we were off on our way onto the Saturday only Brigg line. At Gainsborough Central we got off and started to head to Lea Road.

20170318-Gainsborough Central-144011 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

From here 153376 took us on to Doncaster. There was plenty about as we approached the station. Mostly Sheds but there were four Grids by the station.

20170318-Doncaster-56105, 56113, 56078, 56087 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

Our next move was onto 158901 for the 60 mile trip to Driffield. I needed the spoons there so with that done I was happy the area was cleared! I then discovered a new one had opened down the road at Beverley! That’ll have to wait as I had to stick to the plan!

20170318-Driffield-158849 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

158860 was our ride back to Hull before 158855 was caught to York. At York we saw 158752 in the new Northern livery. I got a picture as it was the first time I’d seen the livery.

We now had some time to kill. We had just under an hour. With no move on for an out and back we decided to pop to the NRM for a look round. Top move this was! The NRM was running diesel rides and today was D2860 doing the rides! It was required so we paid the £3 to take a ride down to the yard limit and back.

Time was tight though and we had asked when it would be leaving. It was 5 minutes later than we were told and I was getting nervous! With the ride down we headed back to the station. We would have about 10 minutes to get there. In the end we had longer as the train we needed was running late. The next hour and twenty odd minutes were nerve racking!

Our train was 185106 and heading to Middlesborough but we were getting later and later. This maybe a problem! We were due into Middlesborough where we were to make a connecting train from Bishop Aukland. All being well it was a +10. However we got to Eaglescliffe Junction and the +10 was all but gone! We stopped at the junction and I feared the worst. Once we were off again I looked back and there was our next train! Waiting and now behind us! Thank goodness! We bailed at Thornaby to get onto 142078 a stop earlier. I felt it was safer incase there was some plan to chuck both trains heading east into separate platforms at Middlesborough. It was now onto Redcar Central.

We were a couple of minutes down but we had a +11. We weren’t that far so all should be ok, yes? No! I don’t know how we did it but we lost time! It was getting desperate! We got to Redcar central and the station is a staggered! The other train was already in and stopped before we were and I thought it was game over! I pegged it up the stairs and saw the guard struggling with the wheelchair ramp! We left late but it didn’t matter! Somehow despite everything we made it to the train we wanted!

142089 was the ride (a winner which was nice!) and after a brief chat with a Northern guard (who at the time I thought was working the train) and clarifying its next stop we stopped at British Steel Redcar!

After getting the photo we set about on our walk back to Redcar Central. We had an hour which was plenty of time, if we could get out! We left the station along a grassy path and then we met an obviously very empty road. We curved round to head towards the main road and to get there you pass under a bridge. Unfortunately all the way across the road was a massive gate that had been shut all the way across the road. OK. We carried on walking and got closer. We realised we could, by grabbing hold of the fence, haul ourselves up towards the roof of the bridge where the gate didn’t actually go all the way to the top. We then dropped down the other side trying to avoid tripping over all the brambles! Don’t forget, at this time, we still had all our stuff for the trip with us! All the while I was just hoping there would be no trouble! There was a (quite big) security building opposite this gated bridge and whilst the lights were on, I don’t know if anyone was home. If they were, they either didn’t see us or couldn’t be bothered! We walked passed it and it was onto the the rather more simple 2 mile walk to Redcar Central!

With that mission completed (and by far the hardest shack I’ve ever scored!) it was now time to get back to Middlesborough on 142090. The plan now was to shack score on the branch up to Nunthorpe. This went out the window though when a late running steam train was coming off the branch from Whitby! 76084 and 61264 passed through when it was too dark to get a photo without them stopping but at I needed them both for sight.

We decided to head to Billingham on 156451 to get dinner in the spoons, which was required. Whilst here I looked at the feasibility of a bus to Norton where the other ’Stockton’ spoons was. Apple maps suggested a bus was in a few minutes and we would be there in 20. It would be rude to not do it whilst here! We had ages until the next train too.

So to the bus stop via ASDA to get some change. I was a donut here and when I purchased a chocolate bar paid with my watch instead of the £10 note I had! Doh! I needed the change for the bus! So back in again I went and this time a bottle of water was bought, this time with the note! We then got the bus to the spoons and got a drink! It was absolutely heaving in there and I was glad to get out! We then set about walking to Stockton station which was now the closest one. When we got near it started to rain and as we approached the station were greeted to the smell of a BBQ! On a cold and now getting wet March Saturday night? Yes! There was a group of people sat outside their house on the pavement having a BBQ! Mad! I like a BBQ but it tends to be warmer and drier!

The last train of the day was 156481 and this was had all the way into Newcastle. It had gone 2200 and was a good time to call it a day! We headed down to the riverside to check into the premier inn and that was day one! Not much red pen action but one very awkward shack done. The bonus was the 02 at the NRM got for haulage. It wasn’t long until I was asleep but it would be a another early start tomorrow (well all days to be honest!)
