No mention of Page 3 - does he avert his eyes

The Sun only backs winners (normally) so they will not back UKIP !!!

We're all doomed then. The three main parties either haven't got a clue or they are so divided as to be of no use whatsoever. AND not one of them will give us a say on Europe. The EU is bad and needs to be killed off

The unfortunate thing is that UKIP seems to spend far too long going on about immigration and not enough time going on about Europe. What is more off-putting though is Farage trying to claim he is the 'heir to Thatcher'. I would see the EU dissolved tomorrow if I could, I think it's the biggest threat to European democracy this century, but if it meant a government that calls itself Thatcherite, then that's almost too big a price to pay.

What is more likely to happen is that the Conservatives will shoot the UKIP fox by offering an EU referendum (although whether they will deliver one is anybody's guess).

If there was a vote we would vote to stay in, so I don't see what all the fuss is about

I wouldn't be too sure. It wouldn't surprise me if the UK is one of, if not the, most eurosceptic EU member state. I'd certainly put it in the Top 5. I do recall once seeing a survey on the matter and the UK, Austria and another made up the top 3 IIRC.

I can remember the 1975 Vote ......

Most of the "Big Three Parties" MP's are in favour of the EU (including Tories) so no chance ....:p

Found it. Not Austria at all; but Latvia, the UK and Hungary.

Eurobarometer 71 said:
On the other hand, the Latvians are still the most sceptical about their EU
membership, but their support has increased slightly compared to January-February (25%, +2). The British and the Hungarians are also not really enthusiastic about their country’s membership, with respectively 28% and 32% of citizens holding this [view]...

Yes, but wasn't 1975's vote on what was essentially an economic scheme, not anticipated to turn into what it has today?

Yes, however if we do get the referendum that Cameron has promised (whenever that it), and the people vote to leave, what will the MPs do? Regardless of their own opinions they'd need to do something, it would be a lethal career move for most of them to disregard it.

The people won't vote to leave when the consequences are properly explained to them ......see Scotland 2014 :p

In general, it's probably about 50/50, depending on who you ask and when. However, it's in no politician's interest to move out, because it's not in the interest of businesses that trade in Europe (massive over-simplification, but never mind). It is also in the interest of politicians to be close to the seat of power (Brussels) so they naturally try to stay friendly with Europe. To expect them to risk that to allow the people a say when they might give the 'wrong' answer is asking a lot, and it will take a lot of political courage (as Sir Humphry might have described it) to take that chance.

Of leaving or staying in - or possibly both ? :p

Both really but more the benefits of staying in given the political slant of the popular press. Impartiality is a dirty word in our news media

After Farage's reception in Edinburgh yesterday should The Party be renamed -EIP ....English Independence Party. :p

It does not seem to have much appeal in Scotland, not sure about Wales and Northern Ireland.

What did he expect when he calls for Holyrood to be dissolved! Or are we supposed to do what we're told and forget about any non-EU policy Farage has?

Perhaps Farage thinks if he bleats (word intentional) UK is good, Europe is bad we'll forget that his other policies are not even good enough to be called half baked

Well one of their policies is to scrap the current Scottish Parliament and replace it with a committee of Scottish Westminster MPs.

Which if course ignores the fact that some people vote for different parties for different elections...

UKIP currently have no elected representatives in Scotland and judging by the above will not have any in the near future :p

Rather amusing to hear the BBC comparing Farage and Salmond. The only one they didn't come up with was Lenin and Martov (leader of the Mensheviks). The more similarities there are between two politicians, the more they hate each other.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage has described protesters who besieged him in an Edinburgh pub as "fascist scum".

Says him?! Hes homophobic, opposes anyone who's not English and the EU and maybe I have rose tinted specticals on as I'm a strong labour supporter but I find it so extraordinary and hypocritical that he can call people protesting against UKIP as fascists when they're mildly themselves.

What happened to the bit "got my UKIP membership card today" - I wanted to ask if it had ....

"Gott mit uns" printed on it :p

Because I couldn't be arsed with the reaction it would probably get, as I suppose if the party's racist / fascist than that would probably make me too

I don't actually know what you're on about, but if you are so concerned about the graphology of my membership card then I'll happily tell you what its features are...

This may be a case of pots and kettles, but I can see where he's coming from, to a certain extent. A flatmate of mine (from Stirling) used to call Salmond a "McCarthyite" because of the way he accuses his opponents of "talking Scotland down" if they try to say Scotland would be better off in the UK, almost as if he thinks he can define what it means to be Scottish. There has already been the case of English students being the only ones paying full tuition fees at Scottish universities, and certain parts of the independence movement are extremely anti-English.

The irony is of course that this protest was describing Farage as "fascist scum". That is of course a standard left-wing tactic used against anyone vaguely nationalist, and often tends to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. The annoying thing is that nobody in UKIP has worked this out yet, although they do seem to be making a bid for respectability in Wisbeach. There was a story on Look East that they asked their supporters not to attend a rally against immigration, with which they have been associated, rightly or wrongly.

Err.. well there's been a bit of back-pedalling on that one!

I think he's learned enough now to know that even the Scots who moan about it constantly would fight for it tooth and nail, democratically or otherwise (whatever), if it was to be abolished on the orders of a Farage/UKIP Regime (unlikely I know) in London - these days are over.

It's difficult what to make of Farage, I've enjoyed some of his speeches at the EU Parliament - even if only for the looks of absolute hatred from the presiding officers who would have him up in front of a firing squad in minutes if they could!

However he seems to have made it clear that he would welcome approaches from the Conservatives as long as Cameron goes, the Tories pragmatic as ever will probably eventually oblige, particularly if he gets into Westminster - but will a Ministerial Car and salary be enough to square Farage into delivering up the UKIP?
