Could that be because a lot of local authorities only elect a portion of their councillors at any given time? So what may have been 18 Conservative councils would always have been 18 Conservative councils because the number of seats up for grabs would not change the majority.

In Cornwall Independent/ Unattached councillors have the most seats following Thursdays elections.

Cornwall results were:

Independent 30.08% 37 +4
Liberal Democrat 29.27% 36 -2
Conservative 25.20% 31 -18
Labour 6.50% 8 +8
United Kingdom Independence Party 4.88% 6 +6
Mebyon Kernow 3.25% 4 +1
Green Party 0.81% 1 +1

1st column is % of vote, 2nd column number of councillors elected, 3rd column variance in number of councillors from previous election

Good to see the Greens at the bottom - beaten even by Cornish Nationalists :p

Illustrates my previous point about Independents !!

The independents had their town/ parish's best interests as their selling points, the parties all were just going with their party policies.

Whereas the only Labour gain (in Derbyshire) was from the status quo of No Overall Control.

So whats good for the goose.....

How come there are not more Independents - a lot of them seem to be in rural / island areas ie Cornwall IOW Orkney

Living in Cornwall the main parties are very out of touch with the rural areas. IOS had their first ever non-independent stand in their election this week. He was a member of the Green Party

I knew there was someone else besides David Dickinson who favoured the use of rather strangely bizarre shades of fake tan, as I am sure that David Dickinson was the nearest human missing-link to the Oompa Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory....:D

He doesn't use fake tan, that's his actual skin colour. He's Armenian.

Why do you think they harvested so many votes in yesterdays Local Elections if voters were so concerned about this ?

Because the general public are complete idiots, if you look at any 'most' popular list, it's bound to be some mindless nonsense.
I've become increasingly misanthropic over the past few years and I've been given good reason to.
Press CTRL ALT Delete or restart or something because I'm sick of this country.

Such cynicism from one so young! Of course the "general public" are not complete idiots (except, interestingly, in a linguistic sense - the word "idiot" derives from an Ancient Greek word meaning "someone who is not holding public office"), and they are protesting here. They realise that a) the system of local elections being split over several years means that radical change is almost impossible so b) they can vote for oddballs without it having the slightest real effect.
If you are so concerned, do something, get involved, stand for local positions. There are plenty about, not just on councils). You don't have to be a party member, in fact it is often better if you are not. And you will soon see that, despite what you read in the media, the country isn't that bad.

Isn't voting for oddballs how the some of the worlds most dangerous parties got in? It doesn't make sense though, why are people voting for another right winger, in the middle of a mess created by right wingers.
My political opinions do not correlate with the current political ideology that's in the vogue at the moment, hence why I wont run in any local elections. (Also I don't have the charisma, confidence or people skills for that sort of thing)

Treated as individuals most people, aren't too bad, but people in crowds as one single entity are complete idiots.
(No I'm not an individualist)

I think that most of the truly dangerous election successes have come about when "extremist" parties put on a "sensible" patina. The Nazis (for instance) were far from being perceived as oddballs when they took power. However, whatever the press may have us think, most people realise that UKIP are oddballs, and are using them to express disquiet rather than downright rejection of the status quo. This is where your puzzlement about backing "right wingers" is, IMHO, using the wrong template. The "status quo" involves three centrist parties who agree broadly on most things, swamped by the effects of a failure of regulatory administration over the last twenty years; in global terms, all three parties are left of centre, but differ on details of approach. I believe that voters see and understand this, but are voting outside the box as a means of saying something must be done. [The effects that such close alignment can have can be seen in some large councils such as Bradford, where the business tends to be not running the city, which all parties seem to think is impossible, but in petty bickering, which is why goons like Galloway can get elected. This stagnation has not yet been reached nationally]

Because not everyone agrees with your interpretation I'd imagine and just because they don't agree with you doesn't mean their wrong either ;)

Cor Blimey, if in global terms all 3 parties are left of center, the world is in a worse state than what I previously thought.

So UKIP are useful idiots then.

In a society where millions more vote for who wins a television show contest than who governs their lives it is more likely that someone with even a glimmer of a personality will fare better than the grey non persona of a bog standard career politician, most of whom are easily interchangeable (as oft they do) between the main three parties.

Let us all be thankful that the "dregs of television" programmes such as Big Brother and others of its ilk are not seen to be a "new way forward" in determining who will be the "front bench" of any ruling British government ?

Can you imagine Katy Price as Chancellor of the Exchequer standing up and giving her personal views on "inflation"...:D

As I believe the lady in question has experience of inflation and deflation perhaps she will be able to deliver "one in the eye" dependent on the way she approaches the topic. :p

You don't have to watch it - the usual retort when one complains about the appalling tripe that appears on our television screens.

Quite so, but it was frightening to see the viewing figures that showed how many millions seemed compelled to do so. The fact that some "redtops" devoted an 8-page "middle spread" to each episode seemed to accentuate the problem.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone think that the Sun will go as far as backing UKIP at the 2015 General Election?

From what I've heard (I don't read the paper on a daily basis, only if someone's left a copy behind on a train, and only then will I glance at a few articles and the Dear Deidre page), the Sun is now strongly anti-Cameron, possibly as punishment for the Leveson inquiry. Private Eye reported that Nigel Farage has purportedly met Rupert Murdoch for dinner, and Murdoch has spoken favourably of Farage in public. Given that most of the Sun's readership will agree with UKIP's policies, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Sun does back UKIP (even the Daily Express backs UKIP)

Most of the press is anti-coalition. It does not like the idea of co-operation, as that tends to dilute its default mindset of "rubbish the opposition". So you get the Grauniad agreeing with the Torygraph, as unnatural alliance as ever Frankenstein spawned. Offering support to UKIP is all part of this game - they are not part of the coalition (and are not BNP - quite) so they get the support. But, when it comes to proper politics in an election, there will not be a coalition to hate, so I suspect the press will revert to type, and UKIP will be left wondering why it doesn't have the column inches it used to.

The Sun will back whoever pays them the most money. It's disappointing that newspapers (I use the term loosely) are allowed to overtly support parties though

I think that your comments are very close to the mark. I can't see UKIP getting much support or coverage at all, as they have little chance of gaining power even as part of a coalition.

As you say, the press hates coalitions, so they will be pushing for a clear winner, which, in reality means Labour or Conservative.

Of course, that doesn't mean the press will get what it desires!

The Sun will back whoever pays them the most money. It's disappointing that newspapers (I use the term loosely) are allowed to overtly support parties though

I agree, though I am sure that the Sun et al would protest at the curbing of free speech, and also point out that they will support whoever they think will do the best for the country etc etc.

Personally I think all newspapers should be as political neutral as my local paper, which doesn't really have an opinion that could be described as political at all. It restricts itself to such glib utterings as 'Swansea is not such a bad place to live as many people seem to think'!

No mention of Page 3 - does he avert his eyes

The Sun only backs winners (normally) so they will not back UKIP !!!
