I am just watching the BBC Six O'Clock News and have seen a Politician being interviewed with a Pint in one hand and a Cigarette in the other

UKIP does not represent my natural Political affinity, however it is gratifying to see a real man rather than a "cardboard cutout" in the political arena.

The only other Politician I can think of who would be pictured in a similar fashion is Ken Clarke with his rumpled suits, hush puppies, cigars and real ale.

Good on you Nigel :p

He's a 'real' man because he smokes and drinks?

No, I may have used the wrong analagy. Because he is willing to be pictured in the media with "two sins" that would send most party spin doctors into a tizzy of guilt and self doubt. Not good "for the image" in these PC days.

Nick Clegg smokes , but I doubt you would find him in a similar pose in public.

He is as much a cutout as anyone. As real as the "Pub Landlord".

But like Boris and Alex Salmond he has charisma :p

And he happily parks his "battle bus" in disabled parking bays, although his local UKIP man said it wasn't. But it was. So as UKIP and Farage are clearly about taking advantage of the less-able then Farage is not a real man but a bully.

Check Streetview to confirm UKIP's lies...

I fail to see how parking in a disabled bay makes someone a 'bully' (which is defined by dictionary.com as someone habitually cruel or overbearing). An error perhaps, and a bad thing to make excuses to attempt to cover up, but a bully? Nope.

As for the man himself, I love Farage, I do expect some of his media appearances may be over done, but for years and throughout his career in the City he was a very eccentric, stereotypical Englishman, so I don't think this whole beer and fags is being put on specifically for the cameras.

I do wonder though just how much that complete and utter moron Cameron is regretting that 'fruitcakes and closet racists' comment - in fact he went as far as to repeal it this afternoon. Oh how much I despise that man.

UKIP is a joke it really is. They can't even be bothered to vet their candidates, and the ones they do have seem to have ridiculous "views": http://www.camcycle.org.uk/elections/2013maycounty/eastchesterton/

Closet racists, looneys and fruitcakes is about right.

And I'm sure if you delved deep enough into the lives of Tory, Labour, Lib Dem, Green etc candidates you'd find plenty of dirty laundry too. UKIP ban (and are the only mainstream party to do so) ex-NF, BNP etc members from even joining at all, and ask candidates when entering if they have a clean and reputable and respectable past. If they say so, their word is taken for it as they are trusted to be responsible enough to say if they don't. Unfortunately that isn't always enough, and that makes things like this arise. But like I say, they'll be plenty of unvetted Labour, Conservative etc candidates too. As for the man in hand in your link, I'm sure you view it as ridiculous, others may view it favourably. That's the nature of politics. I'd say the same thing about 99% of Green Party ideologies from their candidates, however others wholeheartedly agree. C'est la vie!

The cynic in me would say that it's because they're the only mainstream party for which that could be a major problem :P *ducks*

Quite possibly yes, however certainly around my way (and I'd assume for a lot of others similar towns) the alternative vote for many BNP voters is the Labour Party! Odd how many go from far right to centre left...

In terms of their economic policies alone, the BNP are firmly on the left. They don't like the word "socialism" though (perhaps because people might complete the equation nationalism + socialism = national socialism = nazism).

Yep, however if you include social et al policy they do swing right (though then again the spectrum is a circle, not a line). I think a lot of the die-hard BNP voters see UKIP as another Tory party, not someone who will help the (massive stereotype here) usually rather poor, working class kind of people they are. Though as UKIP have proved last night, they ain't really a party of the South as a lot thought, they tend to get an even spread of second place, which will be both their maker and hindrance I suspect.

One swallow does not a summer make.

Remember the "Gang of 4" who left the Labour Party (Shirley Williams et al) who promised a whole new dimension for the politics of Britain.

And The Greens after a wonderful performance in one of The Euro Elections !!

Not at all. Both were twisted, sickening individuals, a fact often overlooked in the latter. In fact I would go as far as to say Stalin actually killed more (like letting 22,000,000 Ukranians starve in just a few months) and was a lot more dangerous as an individual. But, no, there isn't.

Every party has to start from somewhere however. I wonder how many anticipated the Labour Party in the 1900s?

I have heard of no policies from UKIP apart from getting us out of Europe. The other parties should realise people are voting for UKIP because of this but they seem to be denial over this. I thought the Cons were going to give us a referendum during THIS Parliamnebt but they just keep on using delaying tactics to avoid.

The real question is as this is the equivalent to a mid-term election, how many of the UKIP votes are protest votes rather than because people really believed in their policies? Remember the gains BNP made several years ago in council elections? (Not that I want to draw parallels between the two parties but there is a lesson to be learned about celebrating prematurely.)

I don't like Farage. He is obnoxious and only ever seems to spread negativity. Credible alternative to the three mainstream parties? I am still looking for one.

Apparently they have a policy to partly rescind The Smoking Ban, allowing well ventilated facilities which do not expose non-smokers to any "fug" within Licensed Premises.

Good lord no, what an awful, awful set up they are. I doubt many Leftists either would appreciate having another party to split the wing vote either, much like the Tories and UKIP on the Right.

BB21 asked for a credible alternative which they are - at least in Scotland.

Should there be a problem with an ENP - Scotland and Wales seem to manage ok :p

If people think this result is a flash in the pan just wait till January when the papers are full of stories about Roma gypsies arriving in even larger numbers to set-up pick pocketing gangs in London.

Mind you as they are already responsible for 96% of Londons pocket picking it's probably a bit late.

Are you sure that estimate is not rather conservative

Seriously "the chattering classes" will be choking on their muesili as they try to find excuses for the proles voting for UKIP, unable to accept the reality that even in 2013 some people are racist, however you define it's meaning.

I believe that's one of the places Clegg put his foot down but I'm not sure. It doesn't do for parties to complete their core tasks because then what would they promise next time?

Farage himself is clearly a cardboard cut-out, it's painfully obvious. He is trying to portray himself as in touch with the ordinary man and it failed miserably

Similarly they don't have to be true stories. Our papers are hardly known for their accuracy and neutrality

In my area, the UKIP bloke was the only one who bothered coming round to meet his voters. Came across as a really genuine honest chap. I had 4 candidates and the UKIPs manifesto was by far the most down to earth and realistic. HE was also the only one who seemed bothered about the local community in his flyers.
I didnt vote though.

Exactly :) I prefer to think of it in terms of 'Control'. Total control of your life by the government on one side, which covers both Communism and Fascism, and total Anarchy on the other side, where there is no sense of government at all. Of course, both of those are entirely hypothetical.

it is alleged by some that the man is a bug eyed fantasist leading what is effectively the political "paramilitary" wing of the Conservative party.

There is always a shift to the more extreme parties, of whatever hue, during hard times.

What the UKIP vote represents is Tory voters voting for a more right wing flavour of their own ideals. I expect a lurch right by the Tories following these elections.

It's all well and good dismissing UKIP as racist, but it's not actually going to make a difference. UKIP have one policy, and that policy resonates with the real man on the street - Europe has gone too far and something needs to be done.

It is at the moment still a protest vote, but if the 3 main parties that have no differentiating policies continue to ride roughshod over the electorate, then it will become much more than that. This is a warning to LibLabCon that things need to change. Will it be heeded?
