First day back at work for 1000's and signal failure meltdown at Glasgow, trains cancelled at a whim. Seems the engineering work done over Xmas isnt up to scratch, or is it a coincidence ?

Surely yesterday was the first day back for 1000's or was the route not open yesterday?

In anycase, after a tripping the surge protection failed causing extensive damage to signalling components....so yes, a coincidence.

Today was the first day back for most people in Scotland. However Monday and Tuesday the saturday service operated so very little difference to most routes. In fact more frequent on some like Bathgate.

Basicly increased amps/current/volts from the power surge + the failure of the surge protection = Big Bang, lots of smoke and fried electrical components. A bit like a lighting strike damaging your home Hi-Fi equipment.

As to whos to blame....I am sure the powers that be will be asking that very question.

apparently the snow was freezing on the bottom of DMUs falling off, shattering and damaging the engines. The skirts were designed to thaw the engines.

Last winter it was similar temperatures for over a month and services held up quite well apart from the odd frozen points. It just seemed to be the sheer amount of snow this time around killed all the rolling stock. It wasn't just turbostars but 156s and 158s that died as well. Edinburgh Glasgow, Stirling and fife circle services barely ran. West Highland, Aberdeen inverness and shotts line services stopped for over a week.
