Anyone else feeling this is all a little ridiculous?
Three months since the award of the contract and still no news on the remaining two fleets that are supposed to be in service in 20 months time? It's pretty hard to feel positive about this when there's been radio silence from First group (other than the Hitachi bimode news).

Let us be realistic about such matters. The franchise is only 25 days old and any new trains will take a considerable period in construction before they will be entering service.
First, as a TOC, will make their decision at a time to suit them. Interested onlookers who have contributed no financial input should "remember their place" and not take the view like some journalists and TV "pundits" that they have a divine right to be privy to such knowledge.

Exactly - this is a heavy piece of investment and it's better for all involved if First thoroughly assess the options they have. They need the right train for the job, and there is no point rushing into it. I am sure they are busy sorting something out, and as Paul has said, the franchise is only 25 days old.

I don't think it's 'ridiculous' as such, although it's getting to a point where they are pushing it if they want at least some of the new trains in service for December 2017, as per the original plan.
TPE have more imminent concerns to worry about anyway, i.e. covering the loss of the remaining 170s when they leave in July.

And also TPE is redeploying two of the 185s currently on daily loan to Northern (Northern loses one from 16 May, the other from 11 July).

Yes. All that's been confirmed has been 19 x Hitachi AT300 bi-modes, 12 x 5 car electric trains for WCML Scottish services and 13 other 5 car sets for North TPE causing the 350/4s and 22 x 185s to be released.

First Group certainly don't seem to conduct their rolling stock business in public but the "car park watchers" outside a certain lawyers office report seeing happier faces towards the end of the week.
Who knows when the long rumoured deal will actually be finalised and announced but it looks as if, barring a last minute problem, it won't be too long now.

Work on the new order won't start as soon as the ink is dry, it will have a place in the construction queue and a few weeks delay in signing the contract is highly unlikely to change the date on which construction begins.

The pretendolino has been ruled out by internal management, as has any involvement with 442's

If Transpennine want these thirteen trains in service before 2020 then mark 4s are out of the question (the first replacement IEP set for the 225 fleet isn't scheduled to be accepted until late May 2019, and the 225s aren't expected to be off lease until the end of March 2020).
And I don't think that push-pull operation with locos and units (as 68s do seem a likely contender in some form) is commonly considered "retro" outside of the Southern region.

Finally got 185108 yesterday, on a Cleethorpes run (is it confined to South TPE? Not seen the new livery on North TPE). Have to say the new livery looks loads better than Dynamic Lines did.

As far as I know the reliveried units are part of the general fleet and have no set routes. That's why they have been to Blackpool and Barrow! It might just be that the diagrams 108 have keep it on the South for a bit.

Yep I was on 108 on a northern Barrow service the other day! Photo on the other tpe thread!
Was in York this afternoon, came of depot, and worked a service south.

Had them regularly on the Hull services to Dewsbury. 16:41 off Manchester had it three times since it was introduced.

Yesterday they went past me at Dewsbury in the space of about 15 minutes between 17:25 and 17:40. Both on the rear of 6 Car TPE services stopping at Dewsbury towards Leeds.

Probably, but hopefully not. The Mark 5 length is a slightly unusual 22 metres to ensure they fit into the platforms at Euston in the required sub-formations for the portions to Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen.
