Sorry, I was passing by car! There wasn't more than tree clearing certainly.

Looking at the 1:25000 map between Newtons Lane and Potters Lock the county boundary doesn't follow the Erewash but the eastern edge of the railway. I think.

Hopefully Portishead and stations to Portishead will make progress over the next few years. Reopening this line to passengers has already been proposed and would reduce congestion on some of the roads into and around Bristol. Hopefully, after electrification, there would be stock to run on this line. Would probably take a fair amount of revenue too with commuters. When/if this ever goes ahead, stations can also be reopened at Clifton Suspension Bridge if possible (bringing in tourism) and I hope they consider reopening a station at Ashton Gate, near Ashton Stadium.

I can't remember where I've read it (I'll try and find it!) but I'm sure that recently the relevant authorities have said they aren't considering a station at Ashton Gate from the off.

I have read it somewhere too.

There is also a paragraph on the wikipedia page for the old Ashton Gate station that says:

Wikipedia said:
The Portishead Branch Line through Ashton Gate is due to be reopened as part of the Greater Bristol Metro, a rail transport plan which aims to enhance transport capacity in the Bristol area.[3][4][5] The scheme could see the reopening of Ashton Gate, with an aspiration of two trains per hour in peak periods.[6][7][8] Network Rail stated that it was not feasible to build the station during the initial stage of the project, but that the scheme will be future-proofed to allow the construction of a station at a later date.[9]

Is there any reason for why reopening this station isn't a popular choice with various authorities?

Will there be any replacement stations for either Nightingale Valley Halt or Ham Green Halt?

I don't think authorities are opposed to it, it's more that there isn't enough money currently available to reopen it. According to this document from Bristol City council, dated Dec 2014:

Bristol City Council said:
The initial study has found that while it is not currently feasible to build a new Ashton Gate station as part of Phase 1, it will stay in the MetroWest new stations package. A new station and platforms at Ashton Gate would have a multi-million pound price tag.

I'm not sure - I highly doubt the first, as Nightingale Valley Halt station closed decades before some of the other stations on the line and it seemed to be pretty isolated from where its approximate location was. As for Ham Green Halt, Ham Green is very close to Pill, looking at the map, so one station for both of these areas should suffice.

If the Portishead line is successful in the future, maybe the council/TOC will look at extending the Portishead line to Clevedon, but that's quite a while away yet. :p

Thanks for this. Hopefully it'll happen one day, despite not initially being planned.

Ham Green Halt was there for the isolation hospital, later used as an NHS recuperation unit. I know this because my father convalesced there following a lung cancer operation in about 1962 (successfully and a rare recovery at the time).

Clifton Bridge was not mentioned and I doubt if it will be reopened. One had to be a toff who would be met by a pony and trap to be taken up to the bridge and then across it to Clifton itself.

When finances allow, it will be interesting to see where Ashton Gate station will be located. Its old location is fairly useless, being over on the western side of the road complex that maroons it from where folk want to be. I would have thought a location near the signal box level crossing area would be better for the footy fans. Actually, further along at Ashton Drive would perhaps be more useful for the large housing estates on either side there.

Hello, (apologies if we already have a topic for this)

Can forum members collaborate to produce a list of serious station opening/reopening projects in this country.

I suggest the categories: Under Construction, Approved, and Aspirational. At this point, I was thinking new stations on existing lines (so not including the stations on the new airport line of the Manchester metrolink, for example)

A couple to start:

Under Construction: Surrey Canal Road (LO)

Approved: Apperley Bridge, Kirkstall Forge and Low Moor (west yorks), Watford West (LU Met)

Aspirational: Bilton and five others on the Harrogate line

There must be lots more?

Quoted from T&A today

BRADFORD'S newest train station is on track to be up-and-running this summer.

The under-construction £10m station, at Apperley Bridge, will open to passengers in five months' time, 50 years after the old station there was closed.

Yesterday, local MP David Ward and ward councillor Jeanette Sunderland (Lib Dem, Idle and Thackley) were given a tour of the site, off Apperley Lane, to see how work was progressing.

Contractors from construction firm Spencer said the build was on-target for its end-of-August opening, with the passenger platforms, 300-space car park and access road now well under way.

Dan Guiher, Network Rail commercial scheme sponsor, said: "The progress every time I am here is astounding. I look forward to coming back in a month and seeing the platform surfaces in."

He said as part of the design, they had been able to keep three established oak trees, which would sit near some new ponds dug to collect run-off rainwater.

He said: "That was one of our intentions - to leave the site as green as we possibly could."

The new station is being funded by the Department for Transport, with some cash from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Once it is up-and-running, it will have one train an hour in each direction on the Bradford to Leeds line, with the potential to increase this if passenger numbers grow.

Apperley Bridge's old train station closed because of the Beeching Axe in 1965. Plans to re-open it were first announced in 1999, although years of delays followed.

Mr Ward, Liberal Democrat MP for Bradford East, said the station had been a long time coming and would be a "big boost to the area".

He said: "It is great to see it actually happening. I was a ward councillor for this area for many years and this was something we campaigned on year after year after year.

"At times we did wonder whether it would actually happen."

Cllr Sunderland quizzed rail bosses about how safe the unstaffed station would be, especially at night, and was told it would be well-lit with a live-monitored CCTV system.

She said: "It is a lonely bit of the world. I'm now assured it will be a safe place to come.

"I come back to Bradford late at night, so this would be the station I would use and I would want to feel safe."

Cllr Sunderland said she hoped the railway station would alleviate congestion on some of the area's busy roads.

She said: "Local roads are really badly congested. Part of having a railway station is to encourage people to get out of their cars and onto the railways for their journey to work, and this has good access for Leeds and Bradford."

I'd add York, Haxby to the list - its on City of York Council's top priority transport list, planning application is underway, and its likely to be funded from the West Yorkshire infrastructure fund.

Unlikely. This is the latest of many letters and articles in the York Press
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/features...New_railway_station_for_Haxby_is_a_daft_idea/
It has been a sad cliche for many years that the "proposed reopening" gets trundled out just before every election accompanied by a photoshoot of the local Conservative MP.

A line in this update on the Preston local plan mentions that v there will be further delay in the project to open Cottam on the PRE-BPN line.....

http://blogpreston.co.uk/2015/06/pr...ged-to-accept-amended-garden-city-masterplan/

Plans for a new railway station at Cottam – called Cottam Parkway – look set to be shelved from the Local Plan as Network Rail and Lancashire County Council are still negotiating on where the exact location of the new station would be.The Cottam Brickworks development – which faced possible derailing back in November – is safeguarded in the plan as it would serve the whole of North West Preston and not just Cottam

The new site for this Cottam Parkway is very interesting indeed:

old-cottam-station630.jpg

The red bit is the alignment of the new Preston Western Distributor road.

That might be useful in itself, but what makes it quite interesting indeed is this map:

QbI2seK.jpg

This new parkway station would be located adjacent to the HS2 line bypassing Preston, which would be the first part of the line being extended further northwards. Also designed was an M55 Interchange station just to the north of here, including a brand new junction and the shortest new road network possible between there and the station. The PWD works include building the M55 junction and a high-quality road all the way down to the A538 junction, running completely parallel to the HS2 line but seemingly developed entirely separately. What appears to be entirely self-evident is that the HS2 station should be relocated to the south so that Cottam Parkway becomes Lancashire Interchange.

Not sure I would take much notice of that yet as it is what it is, a map in a report from March 2012. Considering there isn't even a sniff of a Hybrid Bill for phase 2 to Manchester/Golborne yet I could still draw a line on a map and say that is the route.

However, that is the only route the consultants found work to run north of Preston, meaning it is very, very unlikely that any future Hybrid Bill would not be based on it. There have been many changes made to the HS2 route since the initial route studies but these have been minor realignments and vertical profile changes (e.g. putting the whole of Old Oak Common to Ruislip in tunnel under the surface route originally proposed).

Indeed, much like the more sensible idea of not going past Streethay on a massive embankment and going in a cutting under the WCML.

It was announced in today's budget that the extended round of the New Stations Fund will be used to support a bid for new stations at Ollerton and Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire, subject to a business case.

Doesn't that require re-opening the whole line to passenger trains, not merely re-opening the stations?

East Renfrewshire Council has placed an advert in my local free paper about it's proposed City Deal projects. It confirms that the new Barrhead South (Auchenback) station on the Neilston line is planned to open at the end of 2019.

Both these two stations were opened by the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway and both saw their first regular timetabled passenger trains in March 1897.

Ollerton saw its last local train service on 19th September 1955 and Edwinstowe saw its last local train service on 31st December 1955.

Both stations still remained open for excursions to the East Coast after closure for general traffic until that too ceased on 6rh September 1964.

My geography text book at high school had a section about the Robin Hood line opening and discussed phase 2 which included a station at Edwinstowe. This was over 20 years ago, so it's good to see there's finally some movement on that front.

Plans for Bow Street's new railway station to go on show

Can be found here

A railway station could be returned to a Ceredigion village for the first time in more than 50 years.
Bow Street station closed as a result of the Beeching cuts in 1965 and since then a number of people have campaigned for the stop to be reinstated.
The proposed new station would be built a short distance south of the original location, which is now the site of a builders' merchants.
The scheme includes a park and ride facility for 100 cars.
Councillor Alun Williams, cabinet member for transport, waste and carbon management, said it was a "very exciting idea" with "strong support" from the public....

Good news for proposed new station at Robroyston:
I wondered if you were making that up, but Wikipedia says it really does exist. I've spent quite some time visiting and exploring the Glasgow area but never come across that bit. My OS map shows it over a mile from any railway line, with other named suburbs closer. Maybe the Scots parliament couldn't resist using the name for a new station!
