There are loads of aspirational ones in South Wales - Beddau, Creigiau, Llantrisant, Talbot Green etc. Think one in Caerphilly has opened recently (Energlyn?)

Edginswell on the Riviera Line in Devon is being designed now. Torbay Council are funding it.

East Renfrewshire Council is planning to use City Deal money to build a new station at Barrhead South with delivery in 2018:
http://www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=12349&p=0

I'm still very sceptical about the GARL element of the city deal ever going ahead but this is a pretty good project that deserves to succeed.

Only thing against it is possibly Neilston folk may not be keen on being redesignated to Barrhead High School catchment from Eastwood High. This might not be popular as Eastwood tends to do better academically and the walking route from the new station to Barrhead is longer and on busier roads than the existing one from Patterton to Eastwood.

This sounds a very minor concern but part of the previous business case for a Barrhead South station was to unlock house building capacity in Newton Mearns by taking Neilston kids out of the Eastwood High catchment. Interestingly this report does not mention this side of the business case so it may have been dropped for political reasons.

.

I think it's fair to say that GARL as originally conceived is a dead duck. The SG was never going to buy the land again, that would've been ridiculous. It's trams or nothing now.

Network Rail tweeted this about a possible new station at Winchburgh:

"We are aware of community aspiration for station but no further information on this presently. Maybe clearer by end of year."

This sounds a bit strange when the ScotRail ITT includes a Winchburgh station as a priced option:

ScotRail ITT said:
5.3 New station at Winchburgh
A new station is planned at Winchburgh (located west of Edinburgh on the route from Edinburgh towards Falkirk High, between Winchburgh tunnel and Winchburgh Junction) to support a residential development. Supporters of the scheme, West Lothian and the scheme developer, expect that it will be open in 2018 or 2019, subject to finalisation of the business case and funding arrangements. Transport Scotland requests Bidders to provide a Priced Option which would be held open so that it could be instructed by Transport Scotland at any time before or during the Franchise Period. The option should include calling at the station, operating the station as the Station Facility Owner (SFO) as well as coordinating and facilitating the commissioning of the station. The option should be priced on the basis that the station is unstaffed.

2 services per hour should be provided between Winchburgh and Edinburgh. Calls at Winchburgh may be inserted into services between Edinburgh and Dunblane/Alloa (Route C2). Journey time neutrality should be achieved, where possible through using up pathing time. Where this is not possible journey time increases should be kept to a minimum. Calls at Winchburgh must not be inserted into services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High, (Route A1) where achieving the headline journey times of 42 minutes is important to the EGIP business case. Additional services may be proposed to cater for the calls where this can be justified by reduction in journey times on other services i.e. Edinburgh / Dunblane.

In Bidders’ financial models, this option should be able to be ‘switched on’ at the time when the station becomes operational (at any time during the Franchise Period) so that the model would be used with the option on to calculate franchise payments thereafter. If there are genuine operational reasons why the pricing of this option must be dependent on the time when the option is instructed by Transport Scotland then multiple options may be used in the Financial Model to represent this, provided that these are clearly identified and fully rationalised in the delivery plan for this Priced Option. Bidders are required to include the following:
• A full description of the 7-day timetable for the services affected;
• A full description of rolling stock diagram changes and other operational impacts; and
• An explanation of the revenue and cost impacts of the proposals.

Shame they can't spell.

Besides its tiny population of circa 750, what is there in Reston that would warrant a new railway station being there ?

Newstead and Cononley are around that size - the latter is probably the most overserved station in the country by local population!

But if there is cash going for a project like Reston, let's build new stations at Tallington, Essendine, Little Bytham and Swayfield on the ECML too! Although maybe we could leave out Burton Coggles...

Barnham surely? Less than 1,500 residents but with multiple trains an hour to London, Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton.

Also re: Reston, it is interesting to note a similarly-sized settlement just a few miles away: Drem. Population of less than 100 but over 1000x that in usage per year. I would also think Reston would have some appeal to Eyemouth just a few miles east on the coast as an alternative to Berwick.

Both of those two English settlements have populations that are larger than Reston and I was making reference to the area of the Borders Railway in my posting.

A good job I said they were 'around that size' then, eh? And I know what the question you asked was, I didn't purport to answer it!

To be fair as there is no station in the Borders Council area on the ECM, and in fact in the Borders full stop! (At least until the Tweedbank route opens) there is a political reason for this proposal. That said it will be a useful railhead for both Duns and Eyemouth.

Drem's appeal is as an unofficial park & ride for a large area of East Lothian and Berwickshire. This is causing parking problems at the station and surrounding area. It is hoped that the proposed new stations at East Linton and Reston will help alleviate this growing problem.

Thank you for your support. Had Ripon been on an existing working railway then with a forecast of 0.92 footfalls annually in 2012 it would be a strong candidate for a station at about £8m. As it is, reinstating the railway from Harrogate to Ripon will cost approximately £50m or £130m throughout to Northallerton

I will admit that Reston did have more of a claim to fame once, as it also served the branch line to Duns.

Those who contribute upon the Closed Stations Journey quiz on this website have learned many interesting historical railway facts in our researches into our postings.

Wasn't Beechwood turned down on the grounds that the gradient was too steep for safe stopping & starting?

I was back in my home town on Saturday and either:

a. I have no idea where Ilkeston station will be or
b. Nothing much is happening

Well when I popped over to Ilkeston on Thursday I was surprised to see progress - all the trees have been cleared on the Cossall Island roundabout side of the site so you look straight over the whole site and down to the railway lines. It has to be remembered that most of the site is actually in Cossall Parish, Nottinghamshire and not in Ilkeston itself - only the platforms are actually in Derbyshire I believe.

Is there any progress with any of the Devon Metro stations yet - Newcourt and Cranbrook which are under construction, and Marsh Barton and Edginswell?
