Hello, (apologies if we already have a topic for this)

Can forum members collaborate to produce a list of serious station opening/reopening projects in this country.

I suggest the categories: Under Construction, Approved, and Aspirational. At this point, I was thinking new stations on existing lines (so not including the stations on the new airport line of the Manchester metrolink, for example)

A couple to start:

Under Construction: Surrey Canal Road (LO)

Approved: Apperley Bridge, Kirkstall Forge and Low Moor (west yorks), Watford West (LU Met)

Aspirational: Bilton and five others on the Harrogate line

There must be lots more?

There's a new station for north east Chelmsford which is due to open next year I think.

There is also Water Eaton Parkway on the line between Oxford and Bicester as part of the Chiltern Evergreen 3 project - the line is currently closed for the upgrade and the station is due to open in 2015 sometime.

And also see http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=97154 for some info on Saltford nr Bath Spa

See these lists on Wikipedia which are comprehensive:

Proposed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Proposed_rail_infrastructure_projects_in_the_United_Kingdom

Current

Are you sure Surrey Canal Road is under construction?

What about Kenilworth? I heard Warks. County Council had planning permission to create a station serving the area on the Coventry-Leamington line a few months back.

How formal do the proposed stations need to be? Those likely to be built at some point or are we aloud to go into fantasy.

There are a few which may be opened at some point which do not appear on the Wikipedia list, these are:
Tavistock, Devon
Hythe, Hampshire (although this held up at present due to lack of capacity due to freight)
Chineham (Basingstoke) Hampshire (although this can not be built until electrification of the line between Basingstoke and Reading)

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Aspirational - Glasgow Cross and Cumberland Street reopened, and West Street new build to interchange with the Glasgow Underground.

These form the plans of Glasgow Crossrail, with the infrastructure (City Union Line) already in place.

Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Partnership (formerly Passenger) Transport have been supporting this over the last 30 - 40 years.

In peace

Pye Corner (Newport) and Ebbw Vale Town would, I think, fall into the "Approved" section. And quite a few in wales in the "aspirational" section.

This comes under the completely aspirational category but i would be a huge advocate for a station at the side of the A6 parallel to the Lancaster University campus.

Several reasons:

-As reported on this forum in the run up to christmas demand for trains from lancaster (and other WCML stations) towards manchester for the christmas markets is huge, the university creates a lot of the demand for this found at Lancaster.

-Anyone who watched the recent tv series All Aboard East Cost Trains and saw the termly weekend chaos when students return home for the holidays at Durham knows that universities create huge rail demand with very few students driving. Lancaster university is not too dissimilar in size to Durham's main campus.

-There are currently freight loops on the site i'd propose for it so adding platforms to the loop could be simulatenously be used as an excuse to extrend them as i believe they're currently too short to accomodate much of the WCML traffic. Personally, i've only ever seen the Chirk logs, engineering trains and i once witnessed a short consist of maybe 12-14 tanks.

-The TPE Barrow and windermere trains could provide a more than adequate daily service and the Northern Furness peninsula to preston trains. These could be suplemented by the odd scotland and london bound train on a weekend due to popular demand from the international students (especially to london and edinburgh).

-If trams were ever to come to Lancaster (as the traffic situation will only get worse from its current horrific state) this would provide a good interface with the heavy and light rail at the bottom of the university's main drive as i doubt trams in the city centre would venture up to the main station.

I would suggest those that are being suggested by either a council or a railway company, rather than our own personal ideas

brilliantly put and couldn't agree more! Former student there and lived on campus for 2 years nearly 10 years ago and always thought back then it was crying out for a station there! Another reason is that it seems a bit nuts that for 20-25 miles there are no stations! And it would surely make a great park+ride - very limited parking at the current station and no room to put a MSCP I think? Interesting about potential for trams too - they'd do well!

Pretty sure Lea Bridge (between Tottenham Hale and Stratford) has been approved. Clearing of vegetation and stuff may have started but I'm not sure.

Under Construction: Surrey Canal Road (LO)

Is this station actually under construction? I think it's still in the 'proposed' stage as there hasn't been a start on works, as far as I know

Just an off-topic observation:

As little ago as 20 years this thread would probably have been called "station and line closures". How times change!

As you were.

We've had hundreds of stations reopened since 1970 and although the pace slowed down into privatisation where a number of options were on the table for the rail network to make it more palatable for private companies, station reopenings continued.

Here are just a few examples.

1993

Gretna Green

1994

Cam and Dursley

1995

Mansfield

In fact I would say we've probably gone through some of the slowest times for reopenings in recent years. The early noughties were pretty slow with numbers being only between 1 and 3.

... and 20 years ago the future of the whole Settle - Carlisle line hung in the balance.

My point was specifically about 1994, not 1970. I am aware that stations have re-opened, however three doth not a hundred make; you have actually only cited one counter-example? How many stations have re-opened each year since 1st April 1994? Has this trend increased since then? That is my point.

This is not an attempt to rile you but it was 25 years ago (1989). They have been celebrating that anniversary this year. To me 1994, was rail privatisation year and if this forum had be in existence then I would expect any discussion to be with regards to what could be cut as a result of rail privatisation. However, I would still expect there to be a very healthy discussion on additional rail stations with the Robin Hood Line being a big driver of rail station reopenings throughout the mid nineties.

http://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co...le_Carlisle_railway_line_was_saved/?ref=var_0

Well, since you asked! I have a log of the stations since 1999 (whilst I would desire a full list, I've not had the time to develop and verify that yet). However, this includes both openings and reopenings. There is no real trend here although numbers were low in the early noughties. They are also going to be low in the early part of this decade too with it likely that some of the 2014 planned reopenings being pushed into 2015. 2015 is going to be a big year with Waverley kicking in. It might even match 2008.

Year Count of New Station
1999 4
2000 5
2001 1
2002 3

2007 3
2008 11
2009 6

Beaulieu Park won't open next year, or indeed any year soon. Still just on the drawing board. If I recall correctly it was originally planned to open around 2004, so 10 years later it is no nearer construction.

I'd add York, Haxby to the list - its on City of York Council's top priority transport list, planning application is underway, and its likely to be funded from the West Yorkshire infrastructure fund.

Well hopefully Worcestershire Parkway will get funding at some point - I think the county council are going to try and reapply for the funding from NR.

Oddly enough yes. York is one of a number of North Yorkshire council areas which form part of the Leeds City Region. Whilst North Yorkshire County Council control transport for the rest of North Yorkshire, York being a unitary authority is participating in the West Yorkshire fund. York is also an observer member of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (I think it'd probably be a full member if it wasn't for the requirement for CAs to be geographically contiguous).

http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co....lution-for-leeds-and-west-yorkshire-1-5899579

Yorkshire Evening Post said:
West Yorkshire’s five local authorities will join forces to create the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, absorbing Metro, the existing area-wide transport authority, along the way. York will also join but, for complex technical reasons, not as a full member from the outset.

James Cook Hospital near Middlesbrough on the line to Nunthorpe (& Whitby) is under construction at present.

Its suppose to open around the timetable change in May, but whoever is contracted to build it is running behind.
