New Station Fund: Ilkeston

Hi

Following the announcement of the council committing money to reopening the station

Does anyone know what is planned? I think the previous Ilkeston stations (Town and North?) were on lines now closed, so is it likely that a new station will be built on the Langley Mill line (near where Ilkeston Jn and Cossall was) and so be out of the town?

There were three stations - on the Erewash (which is the one being re-opened), Town which was on a branch (like Sutton & Stourbridge) and the GNR one.

Thanks for the info Philip - it is as I thought and will mean that the station will be on the east side of town. The BBC video gave the slight impression of the station being actually in the town (which I thought was fairly unlikely!)

It would be impossible to get a line into the town now, since the building of the inner relief road. There's no way that a branch would ever be built anyway.

Something similar to this also occurred at Ashbourne, where the former railway station site there now lies under the car park for the leisure centre.

Probably plenty of people in Ilkeston who'd like to leave though! I'm sure there'll be a market for that.

After the announcement today by the DFT, it seems certain that Ilkeston will get the money to enable re-opening.
If it re-opens, what services would call here? Northern/EMT? All services?

Look at what is said on posting # 74 on the "Network Rail's new station fund" thread on this Infrastructure forum, where Ilkeston is named as one of a short list of three stations.

It is being built off Millership Way (A6096)
This is the new road which runs from Tesco's to meet up with coronation rd/shill way.
The station will be on the right as you approach the roundabout.
The old station site is not being reused, a fact which East Midlands Today failed to research when the new station was announced, preferring to interview the current owner of the old station (car breakers), much to his confusion!!

Yet another unfortunate case of a local television news team not having their subject fully researched. I feel totally confident that it will not be the last occasion that this will occur.

I understand that the promoter (Derbys CC) is in detailed discussion with the planning department about the outline plans with a view to submitting a formal planning application. Whilst the site is right on the edge of Ilkeston and is being promoted by Derbyshire CC, the site is actually within the boundary of Broxtowe County Council so will be heard by the Broxtowe planning committee.

If anyone has views on this station or knowledge of the vicinity, now would be a good time to lobby the Council to ensure a good design is progressed.

I would be interested to hear what people think about access for buses, cyclists and pedestrians to the site?

Just checked my maps and you are right. The railway line is in Derbyshire with the county boundary running immediately to the east of the line - ie along the platform of the southbound line. Presuming at two platforms then the northbound platform will be in Derbyshire (Erewash) and the southbound in Nottinghamshire (Broxtowe).

The station will be on the Trent Barton bus route 27 every 30minutes linking Larklands,Ilkeston to Swingate, Kimberley with no evening or sunday service. There is a cycle path from Tesco roundabout at Ilkeston to the station site and onto Ikea at Giltbrook along the Awsworth Bypass.
Sadly the Phoenix Flyer bus that linked my village with the station & Ilkeston every 30minutes 7 days a week was withdrawn last year. Means I am less likely to use the station - still be using Langley Mill even though it is further away.

With the new railway station at Ilkeston about to commence build there is a interest / debate whether to save the original station building that is still present instead of erect the bus shelter style canopy . This is a good idea as it would add character to the station . It is in the new station plans for demolition .

Not a good idea, it will simply be a target for vandalism. We've waited so long don't do anything to hold it up.

BTW Trowell would have been a good site for a P&R. Pity.

True, and that may be a good reason not to have used the Trowell site, spacious though it is.

Access to the new station is easy from Ilkeston via Millership Way, or Station Road, and from the Eastwood direction via Shilo Way, so as long as parking proves adequate, I reckon the location is about right.

Pity it's so far to walk to it from Ilson, but I guess it's too much to expect them to move the line

Anyone so unfortunate to have used Upholland station on the Wigan Wallgate to Kirkby line and then have had to yomp the long distance from the railway station along the outlying roads to the town would bear out what you say above.

Ilkeston Rail Station

Work is currently under way to build a new station on the Erewash Line in Ilkeston, in between Coronation Road and Millership Way.

The station will feature two platforms and a car park situated close by, with dedicated cycle spaces and wheelchair accessibility throughout.

This development will enable journeys from Ilkeston to Nottingham in just over ten minutes, Chesterfield in just over twenty minutes, and Sheffield in under forty minutes.

The station is expected to be fully functional by December 2014.

I believe the idea is simply to add this as an extra stop on the existing hourly Northern Rail service from Nottingham to Leeds. So there should be a northbound service at about xx30 and southbound at xx45

As it's in EMT territory, I'm surprised they are not planning to have the Norwich - Liverpool service stop there too, giving two an hour to Nottingham and a choice of northbound destinations.
