The latest City of York Council transport plan I have seen calls for a station at Haxby with the Scarborough trains calling, and then, if that is a success new stations, and a new shuttle service calling Strensall, Haxby, York District Hospital and York. It wasn't clear whether the Scarborough services would continue to call at Haxby.

Of the three stations of Strensall, Haxby and York District Hospital, would Haxby be most likely to have a service on the York to Scarborough rail line ?

I would think Haxby would have the best case by a country mile. Haxby has a fair size centre compared to Strensall, which really is a village with the very most basic of facilities.

York District Hospital would probably be a contender for the "shortest distance between stations" when compared to York. Its really only suggested because it is the other side of the river as far as I can see.

There is - mostly medicals I believe. It's just south of the village, about half a mile from the closest level crossing, and just over a mile from where the original Strensall station was (Lords Moor Lane LC).

The Hospital station seems to re-emerge just before every local election, just like the Haxby one... the reason they always seem to give is the lack of parking at the hospital. It would probably be about 0.8 miles from York station (Google maps estimate) - where does that put it on the 'shortest distance' list? :)

A park and ride station would be fantastic around York. They have buses but only one of the routes goes to the rail station, and it stops operating at around 6pm at weekends, so no good if you want to go out for the day. Your only option is to park in town and pay very high parking prices.

Park and ride facilities around the peripheral areas of York are intended for visitors who come by car to enjoy all the benefits that a renowned major tourist city has to offer, without bringing road traffic into the city. They are easy to depart from, for the very same reason.

I would imagine there is a strong case for all three as many people will be commuting beyond York to Leeds. Not sure about what The Scarborough people wold think of three extra stops though.

York District Hospital is going to be more than ten minutes walk from the Central Station. If a station were to be put at the eastern end of the hospital then it would also give good access to the Rowentree factory and as the area is also stuffed with upmarket back to back houses I would imagine it would get good commuter patronage as well.

I am sure a park and ride station to the south of York where the old ECML used to run to Selby would work wonders!

Is it not time to view the York to Scarborough line with a different vision, if these three new stations were to be constructed.

What I had meant to say was that I thought a service that continued on to Leeds would be of more use than one that just terminated at York.

I suppose we have to wait and see as even one extra station has not been confirmed yet.

Although Haxby is bigger than Strensall, owing to its proximity to York city centre, adequate bus service provision and large car ownership, is there really a decent business, economic, environmental or social case for a new station?
The existing Scarborough-rest of world journey already takes long enough thanks to the Kirkham curves.

As I said in an earlier post there was talk of a Northern service operating the route by reversing at Strensall and ignoring any further move towards Scarborough.

I wonder if the reason for suggesting a station at York Hospital is due to the difficulty of getting there either as a pedestrian or as a motorist. I think this is an issue that is complicated further by the amalgamation of Scarborough Hospital Trust with the York trust and the potential reduction of services at Scarborough. A station at York hospital would make access to service there much easier.

Am I right in thinking that the bus (number 1 ?) that used to only show Wigginton now shows Haxby and Wigginton on its destination displays ?

Oh.

Why exactly?

I am not any kind of expert on the York Scarborough line but every time I have used it recently the train seem at near capacity. If three new stations are introduced with just the existing trains stopping then somethings going to give.

My solution would be to allow some of those TPE York turn back trains to serve these new stations or put an extra set on the Existing Scarborough TPE services which drops off at York to serve these stations. I am sure people from those new stations would want to travel on to Leeds and Manchester anyway so why not give them a direct train.

First TPE are not exactly known for running services to serve local stations only on their routes.

There I go with my thinking of the railways as an integrated whole rather than a mass of sectional interests. :)

I am just assuming that many of the people living in the north east of York will want to go to the south west to places like Leeds. Of course the TPE and Northern franchises might be combined at some point anyway.

Equally the good folk of Scarborough and Malton will want to get to York (and beyond) without having to stop at some tin pot places on the outskirts of York that have a bus service every 10 mins.

As said I am not an expert on this but given that the are some north bound TPE services that terminate at York could their run be extended to Strensall?

Again as said above I assume extra services are going to have to be introduced rather than just stopping the existing TPE service.

Could run a PPM that terminates at Strensall and uses Platform 2 at York?

Well you could but it would be better not to have to change trains.

Parry People Mover, in case anyone is wondering. (Please bear in mind our rules regardng “jargon” (including acronyms, station codes and specialist terms);))

Yes, at those times (early in the morning and late at night) that could happen, in addition to a regular daytime service.

More like Political People Mover...

And a direct service from Haxby to Leeds would be nice, but it's really not that hard to change at York, and you're just not going to get it, the obsession with direct trains, over a more frequent, reliable service is frankly jokable in this country at the moment. </rant>

Since the lines to Leeds via Garforth will soon be electrified, why would one send a small, local reigonal train that will likely be diesel, down an inter-reigonal main line, taking precious paths away from >90m long trains with their 30 - 40m long reigonal units? What, is, the, point?

The DfT will decide.

Here's an example of a TPE Sheffield-Doncaster stopper.

There have been numerous other examples on other routes.

The kind of examples where an inter regional cals at local stops are generally because of local quirks. The split between TPE and Northern has always been a bit messy in places, and you're right that calls you wouldn't expect have been placed on various services. I'm not sure thats really a strategy for obtaining a service for a new station.

(Although I do agree that Haxby, if built, would almost certainly be served by the TPE Scarborough - in fact there are line speed improvements linked to the project to ensure it woukd not impact end to end times. That said further new stations would almost certainly require a new service.)

The point of not having to change trains and maybe saving ten or fifteen minutes off your journey. As you get older that gets more important. Believe me on that. :D
