I go through Catthorpe regularly (I have to because there is no equivalent railway line) and I have rarely been held up for more than 5 minutes. I know because I've timed it.
Perhaps you'd like to apologise before making presumptive statements.
You should take your own advice (see above)
Your replies usually include some childish insult because you don't like people who hold opposite views to your own. I'm not familiar with the exact phrase but aren't your sort called internet warriors or trolls?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Agreed. Take note of your own behaviour.
Muddyfish, you are ****ing into the wind with these posters. They have some kind of congenital condition that makes them believe they are right every time by suppressing others. Their aggressive arrogance is staggering but don't chastise them as they know not what they do.
I have yet to see any of them, such as AOwen et al, be constructive but obviously they are incapable of being. I know what I am campaigning for is right because of the support locally. I know my facts are right because I have done the door to door campaigning, site investigations, letter writing, emailing, face to face lobbying and engaged professionals such as Arup to verify data. I suppose that is open to attack from them too. I have ploughed thousands of my own money into this campaign in order to get match funding from others. My critics don't have the first hand facts, only what they have picked up on the internet, not always factual.
I have achieved in my professional life what only a fraction have achieved so I am very comfortable with my own ability so any criticism from those not qualified to criticise washes off me.
I was a founder member of the Dean Forest Railway in 1969(success), member of the Committee that saved the Settle-Carlisle in the 1980s (success) and will succeed with reinstating a railway to Ripon so criticise all you like.
Could be that they are jealous of others coming up with the ideas that all they can do is shoot down. Straw men.
We continually try to improve life for others with hours of unpaid campaigning and fundraising. These posters just sit on their fat backsides and whinge from the impression I get..
All I have stated on here has been supported by the Commons Transport Select Committee. I suppose they are wrong also.
It will be sad not to continue on this site as many on here are genuine. I have thoroughly enjoyed following the progress of the Lancashire Triangle electrification as contributors have been extremely active on our behalf, again at great cost in petrol and time, but I think it is time to break off and find a more friendly site that is more enjoyable to use and leave this site to the hyenas.
In time I hope to make the hyenas eat their words.

I think that the second quote is more pertinent than the first (and even seventeen thousand is more than I’ve seen it quoted on some websites)...
Yes, famous people
used to live there and there
used to be a lot of soldiers there, but these things are pretty irrelevant when assessing the case for a railway in the twenty first century.
The number of people living there is what matters; seventeen thousand isn’t a huge number.
You’ve taken a line that has a potentially good case (a place on the outskirts of the Leeds “travel to work” commuter belt) but you’ve weakened the argument by throwing in a lot of “wibble” (to use a term popular on this forum) – forget about Wilfred Owen/ aspirations for TPE services/ Dr Beeching/ Lewis Carroll/ ECML diversions/ Hornblowers, direct services to Edinburgh or Liverpool / historic populations of barracks or a station at Lightwater Valley...
...focus on the straightforward (Ripon has a good commercial bus service to Harrogate/ Leeds which shows that there’s demand... Harrogate has similar demographics/ tourists and will get four trains an hour to Leeds before long... there’ll be regular services from Leeds to Harrogate that terminate there – so that there’s a practical service to run through to Ripon without needing more paths at any bottlenecks...).
It ought to be a simple enough case to make, but you’ve made it quite convoluted by adding a load of smoke and mirrors.
A very good representative sample because it tells you what you want to believe?

Under five hundred people bothered to respond..
With four trains an hour from Leeds to Harrogate in the new Northern franchise (but only one continuing all the way to York), there’s certainly scope for a branch to Ripon.
It’s roughly thirty miles from Leeds, so should be decent enough commuter distance (albeit with a population of roughly fifteen thousand).
The trouble is that the idea of a spur from Harrogate to Leeds gets dressed up with a load of irrelevance (conspiracy stuff about Beeching) and crayonista aspiration (oh, it’s going to be a 125mph electrified railway from Harrogate to Northallerton, with regular services to Edinburgh/ Liverpool/ London? :roll

...
Trying to give the impression that it’d be better for long distance services to run via Ripon instead of York (despite York’s significantly larger population)
See also the SELRAP claims about running fast trains from Hull to Liverpool via Skipton and Colne... which is my favourite bit of delusion!
Could Harrogate to Ripon sustain a half hourly service with a single track branch? It probably doesn’t need anything spectacular.?
The last Census was 5 years ago. Population of Ripon is 17.5k and rising fast. 1000 additional houses already in the planning pipeline for completion by 2018.
Local attractions and famous residents was in reply to Ripon being called insignificant. Because of them, Ripon has over a million visitors annually. Again you are doing what others do, twist posts for the benefit of your own argument.
The online poll was totally independent and done by the local newspaper. It is only non representative in that it is limited to those who read the local paper and those who are internet connected. Nevertheless it has been verified by experts that this was a good sample and very close to the door to door survey done only 12 years ago. Election opinion polls only sample twice this number.
Thank you for your advice but I am being advised by two firms of transport consultants on this matter. There is no wibble and no smoke and mirrors.
Yes, we know there are to be 4tph Leeds-Harrogate in 2017 as was suggested in the 2006 study and mentioned on here three or four times as improving the case and BCR only to be shot down as usual saying this makes no difference, but it does. Too complicated to explain yet again to the hyenas.
No, the population of Ripon is over 17,000 not 15,000 as you keep repeating. Even if it is only 15k, that is a large enough settlement according to ATOC to be rail connected.
Please read the posts and stop repeating drivel. I will say one more time. Please take it in. Beeching massaged the figures, I prefer lied, to make Harrogate-Northallerton look unprofitable when in fact it was profitable. No ifs or buts. It is in documentation that income from the army camps was not included in his profit/loss accounting for the line because it was not paid into Ripon booking office but to York HQ. He chose to ignore this fact. He also heaped operating costs of trains not stopping at Ripon as a loss. If he wasn't deceiptful then he was just plain incompetent and shouldn't have been appointed.
Where have you dreamt up this exaggeration? Harrogate-Northallerton was never mentioned my me as being 125mph. Harrogate-Ripon on the former trackbed can only be 100mph max due to curvature.
The original Ripon-Northallerton trackbed has been turned back into agriculture so could be new build in a straight line as it is flat with no large scale development or settlements in the way. 125mph would be possible on a straight alignment if this speed was required. Who knows in the future what may be needed.
There you go again trying posters patience with exaggerated statements. What an imagination. I have never said that it would be better to divert passenger trains via Harrogate and Ripon instead of York. I said that after statements put out by Network Rail in the Yorkshire Post that Leeds-Micklefield was approaching capacity and two trains an hour from Liverpool to Newcastle would be doubtful without £millions being spent on this route to increase capacity regardless of electrification, the possibility existed in diverting one or both the Liverpool-Newcastle trains via Harrogate without time penalty.
East Coast replied to my question about extending KX-Harrogate trains to Newcastle via Ripon if the link was there in a positive way.
Yes, in the 2006 report Arup stated that two trains an hour could operate from Ripon to Harrogate and Leeds with an extended siding operated as one engine in steam. BCR for this option was 1.3. It would have a very tight turnround at Ripon of only 5 or 6 minutes but if resilience was required then a dynamic loop would be needed halfway along or double track between Dragon Junction and Bilton Junction. BCR for this option 1.2.
No reason why Hull-Liverpool trains should not travel via Skipton and Colne if Leeds-Manchester is full of other trains. Don't know how they would route between Colne and Liverpool though. Leeds-Skipton is faster than anywhere between Leeds and Manchester.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
A minimum cost scheme might well have a decent BCR, but some sort of excessive double track proposal is going to cost hundreds of millions and never break even.
Can you get travel times down 10-12 minutes one way from Harrogate to Ripon?
Yup, exactly right on both counts.
