I have just bought a new iPad and it is saying I can transfer everything on my old one to my new one by placing them close together and going through the procedure given. All that is fine as far as I can see. What I am struggling to find out is whether it wipes clean my old iPad or keeps it on so it’s on both? Any help would be appreciate.

It'll leave the old as is, for you to do with as you please

As an aside, the function will only work if both devices are on iOS 14. The new one should be but depending how old your old one is, it may not support iOS 14

No, on completion of the transfer your new device will effectively be a copy of the old, the old isn’t affected.

You then need to go through the separate procedure to erase and reset the old device. I’ve done it on a few iPhones now, and on this iPad I’m using now.

The direct transfer actually came in with iOS 12.4, according to Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

I know I transferred from my old iPad Air to my new Air in 2019, when 13.x would have been the current version.

Many thanks for all your help and advice. As it turns out my old iPad didn’t have the facility to transfer anyway, but none the less some stuff transferred anyway and I have managed to manually do the rest that is important. Much appreciate.
