Sadly they'll all be short formed.
Didn't know they had gone and borrowed a TfW set? Is fairly sure they are the shorter Mark 4 formation.

But less flippantly, the options were 91 + 7 + DVT or more 5 carriage IETs (and/or fewer services). If the former is 'sadly' then I take it you think the latter would have been better?

As a regular traveller between West Yorkshire and London, I found the previous timetable more useful.

The idea that these were somehow the 'only' options is hilarious...

But yes, if you choose to set up a straw man then it will have the effect of making the alternative look better.

That's would require a full rewrite of the diagrams for LNER, so very very unlikely.
A diagram rewrite is menial and is not on the long list of reasons we won't be sending them to Scotland.

I know it's not going to happen, but just as a general question, how long does it usually take to refresh drivers who used to sign particular traction and have since lapsed?

Their competence will have lapsed so therefore it‘ll be full training (as if they’d never signed them).

Any chance they might stretch it to Edinburgh in the future?

That's would require a full rewrite of the diagrams for LNER, so very very unlikely.
It would also reduce capacity on the Edinburgh route when one of the main benefits of the current ECML timetable is increasing capacity on London to Newcastle/Edinburgh routes.

How would that differ from what they've just done recently to diagram 225s up to Newcastle?
Because the single Newcastle diagram is built within the wider timetable change work that's happened lately - not as a standalone activity. A further change would need a lot more work, including crew training.

All the 225 diagrams start and end at Neville Hill (apart from the one that stables at York overnight, and that's crewed by NH as well).

There are no other Azuma diagrams that do this, apart from
  • one that has to be an 800/2 as it goes to Harrogate as part of the diagram
  • one that goes to Edinburgh as part of its diagram which is a crewing problem, as well as the issue that it would be a 7-car replacing a 10-car
  • one that forms half of a 10-car service in the morning and then splits into two diagrams

Exactly, so for trainspotter reasons, which isn’t a real reason at all, harsh as it sounds.
(even though I completely agree with you)
And for people who aren't spotters, it's obvious that the ride quality and comfort is much better in a 225.

It's a shame that the bar has been set so low for future rolling stock. I've no hope that the quality of a new 897 exceeds the Azuma. The ride quality of an Azuma is not fit for purpose and shouldn't be acceptable for express passenger trains.

Is it? Substantiated with data, e.g. passenger loadings/ticket sales of 225 vs 80x from Leeds for example?

sweeping generalisations about ride quality of 80x vs 225…

Why would that prove anything about ride quality?

A lot of people especially people who aren't train enthusiasts only know the TOC they're traveling with, not the train.

I just know that the azumas haven't been well received by the public since they have come in. That doesn't stop people from travelling though, people still have jobs and places to be

One might argue that people actively booking 225 vs 80x could, in part, be because of this apparent increased ride and comfort.

To be fair, I have witnessed a can of drink launch itself across a mk 4 carriage from one of the seat back tables, so the ride has its blind spots. The seats are lovely though.

I don’t think most people even know the difference. A friend of mine says they love the leather seats in the new trains, for example.

I think that's a stretch! They're decent, and definitely better than the Azuma, but not something I'd otherwise write home about - 35 years ago, I remember them coming in and being far from rated.

When I'm travelling for work, the ride and poor seating of the Azuma is offset against the lighter interior, better legroom, and less unreliable Wi-Fi. As an enthusiast, I prefer the Mk4s, but there's frankly not nearly as much in it as some suggest.

I agree though that the bar has been set low - shamefully low

To be honest I couldn't tell you. Not my area of expertise I'm afraid.

Well we all learn something every day, I had no idea that Newton Heath crews worked the York stabler turns!

That'll teach me to not read what I'm posting. It'd certainly be a interesting turn to drag a NH crew to York by 4am!

In all seriousness, 1Y01 is now a Leeds driver throughout, but there is still a Doncaster TM night shift that works 1N35 DON - YRK, and then 1Y01 YRK - DON. Shift DRC 155. DRC 151 takes over and works DON - KGX and then works 1S07 back to Donny. For 1N35 this is DRD 11 between KGX - DON and then LDD 55 DON - YRK who then has a break, then takes a taxi back to NL to bring 3A08 into Leeds City and then books off. This is all SX. Saturday 1Y01 is a Donny driver throughout & TM (swap at DON). Nice to remind myself why I am not a driver!

There’s a very clear ride quality hierarchy on the East Coast. From best to worst:
Mark 3
(very big gap)
Mark 4
(even bigger gap)
80x sets

The Mark 4s aren’t great and never have been for ride quality, but they are way better than Hitachi.

Blimey, that seems unnecessarily convoluted, but I'm sure there are good reasons for it.
