Hopefully it gets preserved or static display in a museum, would be great as its a unique train, although the likely future of this unit will sadly be the the scrap yard
The reports up thread saying it's full of corrosion would tend to weigh against preservation wouldn't they?

Always hard to define uniqueness: to me it's no more than a 150 with some doors and windows blocked off and various bits of kit bolted on. More of a footnote than a chapter in railway history?
It differs in the fact that it was purpose built as a monitoring unit rather than converted from a passenger unit. Also given the focus of the refurbished NRM on technology and innovation then surely it makes sense to have a unit (or even half a unit) full of the different equipment to help explain how the rail network is monitored.

True, but as you can’t preserve one of everything, I’d say the vehicles themselves aren’t massively important,

I’d say explaining the monitoring function would better done with text/pics/video/interactive displays, even actual camera footage from a monitoring train, rather than a generic DMU full of kit which the average person would be at a loss to identify beyond “electronics and cameras”.

Thats probably supported by the fact the new NRM Central Hall doesn't have any obvious facilities for items of rolling stock.

On the question of where can a 153 go it should be noted that 153 test trains operate under a different route clearance arrangements. They are mparked in a number of ways but most notably the steps are smaller. That’s what in a lot of cases made them not fiT in places they did fit when 155.

Did I say that one of everything should be preserved?

But if you did it in the right way it would be so much better than just another screen on a plinth.

The NR 153s are a different gauging profile to the standard passenger 153s.
