I spent a very long day traveling down and back to the Cotswold Festival of Steam on Saturday 23rd May 2026, and with limited time there I had planned all my day out, until I got there at about 10 am and found the timetable all gone west by the first train!!
So instead of being able to travel to Broadway and Winchcombe i had to make due with a short stay at Toddington, with the trains running so late i had to get back to Cheltenham Spa for a certain time and didn't want to miss the bus shuttle (mini bus instead of usual double decker) which enabled me to see the Black 5/Grange double header

Back to 10am and 34070 Manston was still at Cheltenham RC station with the 09:45 service to Broadway

I decided to wait for 45110 to put in its first revenue service since 2008 when it was with drawn on the SVR, bought from them 3 years ago by WCRC, this being its debut running

Now approaching 45 minutes late we waited outside Gotherington station for 78022 to depart

Finally at Toddington nearly an hour late 45110 was taken off its train due to 'sticking brakes'

Just in time for the Spitfire flypast
and to see this little gem
229 ex GER & LNER Y5 Class (visiting from the Flour Mill workshops) arrives at Toddington with a 3 coach shuttle service

Visit to the works to see locos under overhaul 35006,7903,7820 & 2874

Then back to Cheltenham on the 13:04 service which eventually left at 14:00 arriving at Cheltenham RC at about 15:05'which left me plenty of time to see the run rounds and forming up to double head back to Toddington

Yesterday i was originally just going to go to Hellifield to see Blue Peter pass, but due to weather forecast of heavy rail in decided to head to Carlisle, (which as it happened was a good choice as i have seen videos of it pouring with rain at Hellifield in the morning)

60532 Blue Peter arrives at Carlisle with Saphos Railtours 'Settle & Carlisle Fellsman' tour 1Z45 0726 Crewe to Carlisle

60532 Blue Peter at Carlisle with Saphos Railtours 'Settle & Carlisle Fellsman' tour 1Z45 0726 Crewe to Carlisle

60532 Blue Peter leaves Carlisle at the rear of 5Z46 1338 Carlisle to Carlisle Upperby Tmd Lsl for servicing and turning

Nothing much doing freight wise, but this test train arrived just after i arrived at Carlisle
37421 T'n'T 37425 Concrete Bob on 1Q74 0546 Carlisle to Mossend Down Yard test train at Carlisle

Couple of freights

66421 Gresty Bridge TMD with 6K05 1222 Carlisle N.Y. to Basford Hall Yard

Yesterday Sat 6th June i decided to combine seeing Tangmere at Manchester Victoria and later visit the ELR were 60103 Flying Scotsman was working (photos of ELR later)
Yet again another platform change at the last minute, (seems to be the norm for Manchester & York nowadays)
34067 Tangmere with 'The Coast To Coast' tour arrives at the gloomy Manchester Victoria passing 195022

34067 Tangmere ready to depart

I visited the ELR to take some photos of 60103 Flying Scotsman visiting for a few weeks, also in steam running the normal rostered steam service was 80097.

Ramsbottom

I travelled out by bus to Ramsbottom to take these photos there
80097 waiting for 60103 Flying Scotsman to pass
60103 running tender first arriving from Rawtenstall

80097 ready to depart from Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall

some photos now of the 11am Flying Scotsman service from Bury to Rawtenstall passing Ramsbottom

I went back to Bury by bus to get some more pics of Flying Scotsman.
Unfortunately 60103 Flying Scotsman was sent into the wrong platform at Bury P2 instead of P3, after a lot of head scratching a radio messages between rail staff, 60103 took the stock out of P2 down towards the shed area, then pushed all 9 coaches into p3 then had to run round a fill up with water, i later found out there was a problem watering at Rawtenstall!!

On last Friday 12th June I travelled on Vintage Trains 'The Cathedrals Express' from York to Newcastle and back, the tour started earlier from Birmingham with Collett Castle 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe leading and 37240 was tail gunner.
I joined at York where there was a scheduled 35 minute wait. I imagine waiting for a time in the schedule where we could run non stop to Newcastle.
a few photos from York

A very spirited run north with a maximum of 81mph through Durham station

arrival at Newcastle was early so we had a 10 minute wait on the bridge
By the time i got off the tour and walked slowly to the opposite platform for some photos a Azuma had arrived so only managed a few photos

Then off to Wetherspoons for dinner/drink!!!

Made my way back to station to see the 2 scheduled biomass workings through the station that afternoon
66687 Annette on the slow lines at Newcastle with 6N87 1338 Lynemouth Power Stn (Gbrf) to Tyne Coal Terminal Gbrf
66762 on the slow lines at Newcastle with 6N22 1356 Tyne Coal Terminal Gbrf to Lynemouth Power Stn (Gbrf)

37240 brought the empty stock into Newcastle for the return

5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ready to depart with the return 'Cathedrals Express' from Newcastle to Birmingham

Finally i left the tour at York

75078 seen at Oakworth & Oxenhope

Haworth shed yard, with 41241,Dora,08266 & Jinty 47279

I went over to the first day of the KWVR's Diesel Gala on Thursday,
Very well organised, many thanks to the organisers for getting such a large collection of locos, its a pity the Railways 20&37 are out of service.
Very good for the railway as nearly every service was full to standing on some services, and this was a Thursday!! bodes well for a hot Saturday & Sunday, i will be back on Sunday as i got a 2 day members Rover ticket
Bit of a arty photo taken at Keighley station!! just right position at right time

Does anyone know what happened to 55009 Alycidon, as coming out of the tunnel just after leaving Haworth for Keighley it slowed down and stopped, and seemed reluctant to get going, it did but the same thing happened again at Oakworth, (just seen now Friday 08:00 that there is a fault on the Deltic), hopefully it can get back running as it's a big draw!!
Seen here stopped after moving forward a few feet at Oakworth, cab crew kept looking down at the wheels
The double headed 31's & 37's were well full

The boys looking after D9520 were up to their tricks again with renumberings it was running as D37025 ) I wonder why HaHa!!!

37218 Carbon Redeemer runs round at Oxenhope
55009 Alycidon at Oxenhope
50049 Defiance later worked double headed with 55009 Alycidon

The only other steam loco present was 60103 Flying Scotsman

Also present were diesels

37418 An Comunn Gaidhealach (1)
37508
37512 Thornaby Demon

Up the creek
34041-34048 41 is Southampton Tunnel Junction (to differentiate it from Salisbury Tunnel Junction).
70048-70051 41 is at Hest Bank, not on on Hest Bank; Hest Bank is a village, not a gradient.

After seeing Eddystone in Peterborough station I went over to the Nene Valley Railway for their 'East Coast Weekend' services, featuring Peppercorn A1 Pacific 60163 Tornado & Class 55 Deltic 55009 Alycidon.
Also HST Power car 43048 T.C.B.Miller MBE on display at Peterborough NVR station
https://railway-photography.smugmug.com/Days-out/2026/July-2026/Peterborough-/i-ZqckzTL

Unfortunately due to the time table slipping i was unable to get a photo of both locos in the same photo, as the railway decided to T'n'T the services between Wansford-Yarwell Jct-Wansford to avoid delays running round at Yarwell.

I went to my local preserved railway, the KWVR on Saturday 18th July.
41241 was adorned with a wreath for the sudden passing of one of the Damens station staff earlier in the week.

'Through the Arches'

Working the services were 78022, with 41241 T'n'T with D9520. 75078 was in steam in Haworth yard having a steam test after boiler washout, also 47715 failed earlier in the morning, so was unable to work the first diesel hauled service, which 78022 took on.

I had a day out on Saturday at York & Scarborough. At York there was 'The Citadel Express' (125 Group & Retro Railtours) hauled by 43159 Rio Warrior & 43025 Exeter

Then an hour later The Yorvik Discovery (SRPS Railtours) hauled by 50050 Fearless T'n'T with 37025

37025 Inverness TMD which took the tour onto Scarborough

50050 will work the tour back to York and then back to Scotland

There are photos of each coach as well!!
