I'm sure kieron was joking about Coleraine. It wouldn't be accepted on the ferry and you'd be told where to go if presenting it on a train there.

Yes, sorry. I noticed they'd put (Birmingham) after University, and tried to think of a reason for it. There's a station for the University of Ulster campus in Coleraine, and a Metro station for part of the University of Sunderland.

ATOC did finally add that update to the change page. They described this change like this:

For customers travelling from Barnt Green to Cheltenham the customer has to double-back at either University or Birmingham New Street to complete their journey, however this double-back in currently not permitted. On other flows in the area surrounding Barnt Green, namely Redditch, Alvechurch, Longbridge and Northfield for example, the routeing guide permits double-backs for travel to Cheltenham. Amending easement 700331 will allow a double-back at University and Birmingham for the Barnt Green to Cheltenham flow​

There are five different easements which allow you to double back via University for journeys to and from places south of there (700128, 700330, 700331, 700445 and 700474), so I'm not going to try to work out what the overall effect of them is.

Some changes were made to the routeing guide yesterday.

New dataset RJRG0394 published 22 January 2016



to remove circuitous routes between Newark and Lincoln, (via either Doncaster or Peterborough introduced when map ER was amended in 2013). And other circuitous routes from Sleaford and between Grantham and Ely, the following changes to map permissions have been published

This removes a route via Cambridge and Hitchin.

700611: Sleeper services from Euston to Fort William, Aberdeen and Inverness are diverted in February 2016 passing without stopping at Haymarket. This positive map easement will provide temporary map permissions for the use of journey planners during these diversions. This easement will operate in both directions.​

This is a bit more specific than 700610. That said, I wasn't aware that the Highland Sleeper ever stopped at Haymarket.

For engineering work affecting the Great Western Mainline the following easements have been published.

Easement added

700612: During Engineering works on Sundays 7 and 28 February and 06,13, 20, 27 March 2016 the line between Radley, Didcot and Tilehurst will be closed. Services will use the diversionary route via Newbury. This map easement will allow Customers travelling with tickets on Fare Routes ANY PERMITTED (00000), Via EVESHAM (00805), Via AP EVESHAM (00433), Via LONDON/EVESHAM Fare (00799), Via EVESHAM/STROUD Fare Route (00803), Via LONDON/STROUD/EVESHAM (00827), on journeys that would normally only be permitted to travel along the closed route to travel via Swindon, Chippenham and Newbury to and via Reading. This easement will apply in both directions​

Three things strike me about this easement:

1. "journeys that would normally only be permitted to travel along the closed route" seems like a rather complicated thing to work out.
2. I wonder what's so special about Evesham routes here, given that someone with a "not via Birmingham" ticket (for example) may find a 'bus between Oxford and Reading equally inconvenient.
3. Some of the diverted trains are scheduled go via Swindon, Chippenham and Newbury, but at least some of the London-Worcester ones are shown via Bath and Newbury instead. This easement would not enable you to use a London-Droitwich ticket on one of those.

700613: During engineering works on Sundays 7 and 28 February and 06,13, 20, 27 March 2016 the line between Radley, Didcot and Tilehurst will be closed. Customers travelling on journeys that would normally be routed on this closed line using tickets on Fare Route NOT VIA READING (00810) may do so to utilise bus rail replacement services. This easement applies in both directions.​

If you assume that "may do so" means "may travel via Reading", this allows people on cheaper tickets to avoid a change at Didcot, needed as the Didcot-Swindon line is also closed then, and Didcot services are slower and less frequent than usual.

700609: During engineering work on the 16 and 17 Januray that will close the route via Newbury for journeys between London Paddington and the West Country, journeys using fare route 00063 VIA NEWBURY will be able to travel via Swindon. This fare route easement applies in both directions​

Surely easement 70445 does

Customers travelling from or via Bromsgrove to Alvechurch or Redditch in possession
of tickets routed "Not Via Birmingham" may double back between Barnt Green and
University stations. This easement applies in both directions.

If you're using route Evesham or similar (as listed) then yes I don't see why not.

Just don't try to break your journey outside the area or while off the normal route - that takes you into a grey area where there are contradictory rules.

I think there is a missing easement for travel via Kingston to/from stations on the Hounslow Loop during current engineering work.

There is engineering work between Barnes and Clapham Junction on all Sundays (and some Saturdays) until 21 February. Some trains to/from Reading or Windsor & Eton Riverside are diverted via Wimbledon and Kingston, as well as there being replacement buses via Putney.

If travelling from Hounslow or Isleworth to Clapham Junction, Vauxhall, or London Waterloo (in either direction actually), it is almost always faster (by about 30 minutes in some cases) to use the diverted train services via Kingston (by changing at Twickenham or sometimes Feltham) rather than use the replacement buses. However, the route via Kingston is not permitted for the journeys mentioned above, which means journey planners only show the replacement buses and not the faster all-train route.

Only the timetable search on MixingDeck can bring up the all-train route via Kingston, but you must use the "Services which call at" option which forces services via Kingston to be used.

This easement applies in both directions.​

This easement includes a long list of stations, but only Weymouth, Upwey and Dorchester West actually have tickets to Bristol TM with any of the specified routes (I haven't checked other stations in Bristol).

Redundant easement dated to end 12 December 2015

Easement removed

000031: Journeys to Yeovil Pen Mill may not go via Yeovil Junction and journeys to Yeovil Junction may not go via Yeovil Pen Mill. This prohibition applies in both directions.​

Neither redundant nor with any published end date. Removing this easement may lead to a few more people using the 18:33 from Yeovil Pen Mill to Yeovil Junction, though.

Easement 700612 was modified in this set of changes, but this wasn't mentioned in the summary.

It's now:

The change was to restrict the benefit of the easement to people travelling to a station beyond Bristol. This is all on the route London-Cardiff (and beyond) trains will take during the works, so a London-Bristol Parkway ticket will remain valid, provided you catch one of those trains.

Interesting - the problems with missing routeing permissions via Solihull may not have been noticed because for a lot of those journeys (e.g. Banbury to Preston) that will be within 3 miles of the shortest route.

To prevent a doubleback on journeys to Morpeth from London the following easement has been published.

No problem. From trying a few searches for a Bristol TM-Southampton Central journey, Assertis and WebTIS planners seem to interpret the easement correctly, but I could only get Trainline ones or NRE to give me the "via Salisbury" fares when I put "via Salisbury" in the search. Getting a 'bus which goes through Salisbury is not enough.

The other changes do more or less what ATOC say they do, but I've attached the notes I made for them here:

St Leonards Warrior Square also fails the fares check for "Plus High Speed" tickets between Pevensey & Westham and London. I don't know how far you'd get with the argument that a "Plus High Speed" ticket allows you to use HS1 for at least one stop. It does let you use Thameslink through Farringdon, though.

Pevensey Bay-London is another journey for which no tickets are valid via St. Leonards.

To compensate for timetable changes that will apply from 15 May 2016 that would reduce journey opportunities to Denham Golf course, the following easement has been published.

About bloody time! I have mentioned this a couple of times, a few years ago it was valid via Derby so glad to see it reinstated! I remember going back home (Thirsk) from student digs (Newcastle under Lyme, from Stoke station) via Derby during WCML disruption a couple of times. Good to see it back. I wonder if they've updated Northallerton though.

Friday's change allowed you to use a Newcastle-Southampton train between York and Newcastle, but you can still only use Plymouth-Scotland ones as far as Sheffield as it didn't touch that route. This is a pity when Plymouth-Scotland trains usually have a better connection to Derby-Crewe ones.

By contrast, a ticket to Stoke from Leeds, Selby, Scarborough, Northallerton, Middlesbrough or Darlington isn't valid via Derby at all. Tickets to Longton from those stations are, though.

This gives the same benefit as 700620 to journeys from the same stations to or via Bristol, as well as those from Chippenham, Melksham and all of the stations on the route between Bath and Weymouth except for Upwey.
Unlike 700620, this does not affect any advance tickets.

This means that the situation would have been exactly the same if 700620 had only applied to "AP Salisbury" tickets.

Easement 030024 is withdrawn. It was first published on the 18 August 2003. Since then a new Routeing Group at Wrexham has been created which meant that the easement has had no impact on permitted routes. This is because both the origin (Gobowen) and destination (Wrexham General) share a common routeing point and the journey via the applicable location of the easement (Shrewsbury) would fail the steps of the Routeing Guide by not going via the shortest journey. Therefore Journey Planners and manual calculations of Routeing Guide permissions will have ignored the easement.

Easement removed

030024: Journeys from Gobowen to Wrexham general and beyond may doubleback via Shrewsbury. This easement applies in both directions.​

Whatever it used to do (and I've seen a version of the routeing guide from 6 years earlier which contains a similar, but more restrictive, version of this easement), it's gone now.

Easement 700618 has been amended to only to apply when Denham Golf Club is the destination station. Timetable changes mean that it is not required when Denham Golf Club is the origin station.

Easement changed

These stations are associated with Bedford and West Hampstead Thameslink. I don't know off-hand what journeys were being prevented by this.

For engineeering works affecting Cross Country services the following easement has been published

700623: During engineering work on the 01 and 02 May 2016, Cross Country services between Chesterfield and Wakefield Westgate are replaced by rail replacement road services. This map easement will create temporary map permissions directly between Chesterfield and Wakefield Westgate, to allow Journey planners to show the full range of tickets for journeys via Chesterfield.​

I'd be disappointed if this didn't also cover journeys to Chesterfield on those dates.

Regarding the most recent changes, several loopholes in Yorkshire have also been removed. It was possible to pay a fraction of the asking price for journeys to Doncaster etc.

To be fair, that thread was supposed to be about defunct loopholes. But everyone needs to be very careful what they post, as rail industry pricing managers are certainly reading everything that is written on this forum. I'm all for sharing information but careless talk costs loopholes! PMs and Forum Meetings seem to be the only safe ways to exchange tips.

I suppose an "invitation only" forum for loopholes could work but there would be the problem of how to vet members and it would risk becoming a clique. It would only take one ATOC spy to get access, or a poacher to turn game-keeper, and they'd have a field day! Best keep it all Secret Squirrel.

A recent change to map sequences between Shrewsbury and Goole added a permission that mirrored those in place for Birminghm (G02) and Goole . However that particular permission created unintended circuitous routes and has resulted in this correction.

When Cross Country services are diverted vi Romsey on route to Weynmouth a Journey Planner system is currently confusing the routeing; in that when doubleback easement 30263 is applied the doubleback is stripped out of the route check and therefore for journeys beyond Brockenhurst from Origins not on a direct train are failing. The solution is to add a map link between ROM and BCU. This will be removed once the diversions are concluded.

Map RM - ROUTES VIA READING TO MANCHESTER changed (1 added links)​

Easement 30263 only affects journeys from and to Redbridge, so I can only assume that a new easement will be added for longer distance journeys before Crosscountry go to Weymouth.

It says above that this route will be removed once the engineering works finish. I don't see the benefit of this, personally.

On map RM, Romsey is connected with Basingstoke, Brockenhurst and Southampton. Going to Brockenhurst and going to Southampton both involve the same route to Redbridge. Going to Basingstoke involves going through part of Salisbury, but not going as far as the station, before joining the line from Salisbury to Basingstoke.

Some routes involve RM either before or after another map. It's never used before or after a map which contains a link between Romsey and Salisbury, however, so you can't get to Romsey on RM, and then travel onward on a different map.

This means that, once the timetable goes back to normal, the presence or absence of this link (or, indeed, of Romsey on this map) will make no difference to rail travellers.

Of course, I don't know how this affects journey planners.

Due to engineering works, trains from stirling are diverted via Springburn on route to Glasgow Queen Street and beyond, and therefore are not found by Journey Planning systems. The response has been to add a map link between Stirling and Springburn Routeuing Points. This will be removed at the end of the works.

SG is used for a lot of routes from Springburn and Stirling. In general, routes from Stirling are now valid via Springburn, and ones from Springburn are unchanged.

To facilitate diversions during Engineering works the following easement haseen published.

700624: Due to engineering works from the 28 May 2016 to 30 May 2016, services that travel from or via Cheltenham Spa to Bristol and beyond will be diverted via Kemble and Swindon. This positive map easement will provide temporary permitted routes via Swindon and will apply in both directions.​

Another engineering works easement which starts in more than 12 weeks' time.

Historic (NFM64) Fares checking has shown that the permitted routes as intended by pricing for journeys from Lichfield City and Shenstone to Lancaster (and destinations beyond on the WCML) were only via the Lichfield Trent Valley Routeing Point. To include journey options via Birmingham Group Routeing Point the following new easement has been published.

Easement added

700625: Customers from Lichfield City and Shenstone travelling to Lancaster and beyond may travel via Birmingham New Street. This positive Routeing Point easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement applies in both directions.​

This affects journeys to Lancaster and Carlisle, doesn't affect ones to Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen, but does affect ones to Inverness.

Easement 700235 was created in 2012 when Farnborough was a Routeing Point. Fleet, Winchfield and Hook had Farnborough Group as their applicable Routeing Point. The journey from Farnborough to Aldershot was a mapped route which did allow travel via Woking. In this configuraton, the Doubleback Easement 700235 would have been required to ease the 2 timings through Brookwood. However since the Farnborough Routeing Point was deleted (prior to April 2014 ) the easement has no purpose.

Easement removed

700235: Customers travelling from Alton, Bentley, Farnham, Aldershot and Ash Vale to or via Fleet may double back between Brookwood and Woking. This easement applies in both directions.​

I don't know if this means that they were only interested in shortish journeys (i.e. ones not as far as Basingstoke, which is still a routeing point), or if there's something else there which duplicates it for those journeys.

Oh yes. There were a lot of changes to the routes, but I still calculated there to be 118 routes between Goole and Shrewsbury which didn't change.

These include both the one you mention (which I understand to be the shortest route between Goole and Shrewsbury), and a slightly longer one using the one or two trains a day between Goole and Knottingley before continuing to Shrewsbury via Wakefield, Mirfield, Manchester, Stockport and Crewe.
