I have two stations within my town centre, which you can walk between in a matter of seconds. I am the home of a well known betting company, tinned food producer and host premier league football and super league rugby.

(bonus points for naming the companies and teams)

A very old station. Right next to a river. Has a level crossing and a signalbox over the line. A pub on the opposite side to the river butts up hard against it. This pub has a 12 pump real ale bar. The station has a very strong connection with Stephenson.

[Apologies to EM2, your challenge seems to have been lost! I can't answer it...]

A new one from me:

I am within commuter range of one of the UK's largest cities. There are two routes through me, one of which terminates. I have a total of four platforms, at least one (but not all) of which are electrified using OHLE. My southernmost station is the busier of the two.

I can see why you say Lichfield, I'll admit that much. But Trent Valley has three platforms, and City has two. Also, I believe that all five have OHLE (I may wrong).

You know... I'm getting kinda bored of this game now. So unless someone else is willing to provide a few, this may well be my last.

Everyone's still trying to get yr last one, which seems to be confounding everyone. It gets a bit messy if there are several in play because people set new ones before the old ones have been solved.

I realise that... Maybe I'll get back into it after a while. Anyway, to repeat with an extra clue:

I have a total of four platforms, at least one (but not all) of which are electrified using OHLE. My southernmost station is the busier of the two. The city in question is either north or a part of the M62 corridor.

It's not anywhere AFAICS. The city it's within commuting range of must be Leeds or Bradford to be north or a part of the M62 corridor and one of the UK's largest. But nowhere fits the rest of the question, and believe me, I've racked my brains on this one.

St Helens?

I really can't see what it could be, I would have said Wakefield but there's three platforms at Kirkgate and neither station is a terminus, can't be Warrington either. The M62 goes to Liverpool so it could be around Liverpool, Manchester or Leeds.

Did Ivo mean in the north or north of the M62 corridor? Could it be somewhere in Glasgow like Helensburgh?

But Liverpool and Manchester aren't north of the M62 corridor. I might have said Keighley, which has the required 4 platforms, not all of which are electrified, but there's only one station (you could count Ingrow, but it makes a total of five platforms, and is south of Keighley yet hardly busier).

The key is that I said north of or a part of the M62 corridor. I deliberately avoided saying "not south of", because I wanted to see if anyone would think of Glasgow/Edinburgh/Newcastle.

Also... the answer has been and gone:

Did Ivo mean in the north or north of the M62 corridor? Could it be somewhere in Glasgow like Helensburgh?

[Insert Muttley-style growl here]

Okay, with that one having clearly spawned some interest, I'm game. I'll find a new one for you all. Such as this one:

I am part of one of the UK's twenty-five largest conurbations, as suggested by the ONS (and Wikipedia). I am one of the principal settlements of that conubration, though I am not a part of a Unitary Authority whose name is exclusively identical to my settlement name. Indeed, I may not even be in a UA, I am not saying. However, further east in the conurbation is one of Britain's busiest non-suffix stations. There are shuttles between my three-platform station and it. There is also a main-line that has a spur direct to my station, thus avoiding the major station.

Right then I have one.

I am a mining town deep in rugby league land. I have 3 railway stations, 2 are served by regular services to 2 of the major citys of West Yorkshire, while the 3rd has a very limited service on what is an otherwise, mainly freight route between the main city of south yorkshire and the city which has a minster in North Yorkshire.

That would be Pontefract. (Would it not?)

And what happened to my newest one? Which has been sitting around for a few days, idle?

Has to be Pontefract that one.

Come on Ivo, give us a clue. 25 is a lot of areas to look at!

I don't think anyone knows what 'exclusively identical to' means.

Poorly written, I admit...

It is not in a UA whose name is identical to the settlement. This does not automatically mean that it is in a UA, however. To give an example, the 26th largest conurbation is home [Southend]. Southend-on-Sea is a Unitary Authority and shares the name. However, this not the only settlement in the conurbation; the largest other town being Rayleigh. So Rayleigh would fit the bill in that sense, whereas Southend would not.

Correct. It is indeed Pontefract. If anyone bothered, im sure a much improved service could be offered along the S&K route though Baghill.

Right, with 43167's confirmed as Pontefract, I'll make mine a little easier, given that it is the only poser in play... but the clue will be another little blighter.

The settlement in question is not north of the M62 corridor. It may however be north of the physical road [along the lines of Wigan, which has been before so don't say it!]

I'm sure they could, although it does take a while to get between Sheffield and York on the line. I quite enjoyed my trip on the 144 last year, always good to bash a new line.

I remember when there was just about a train every two hours via Baghill (1980s), but this was when the number of NESW workings was a fraction of what it is now (and went over the now lifted line via Wath and Royston to Normanton, going on via Castleford to join the main line at Burton Salmon). Nowadays anyone who wants to go from Sheff to York can just go every hour via either Leeds or Donny, so there's no real need for any other service.
