Staines?

I think I misread your post where it said "This town once had three stations but now has one, which is a junction for a secondary line and a branch". I took it to mean that both a secondary line and a branch left from here (i.e. it was a double junction) :(

Battersea is incorrect BTW. My username could be a clue.

Excellent.

I think the answer to EM2's question is Oxford.

My next poser:

I am a town with two stations. One of the two is adjacent to a junction, but has platforms on one of the two lines only. Both lines have through services to London, but to different termini. Both lines are electrified.

Bradford - the GU services and EC

Or Hertford?

Neither. Trains to both London termini leave from the main station in the same direction, and the lines diverge just before the other one. In the other direction trains go one stop to the place where they mostly terminate (station x). Beyond station x, the electrification continues for one more stop (although most electrics terminate at station x and don't go through). After that it becomes one of the only diesel lines in the area.

Okay here is one. This station is a two platform terminus, but the trains that serve it reverse to terminate at a single platform terminus.

How about this one? This station is a two platform terminus, but the trains that serve it reverse to terminate at a single platform terminus.

Sounds familiar, but in this case, the two platform terminus wasn't always a terminus, while the single platform terminus was (kind of the opposite of Cromer and Sheringham). Trains to the branch terminus can leave from either platform, but trains to the main line junction station can only leave from one of them.

so, this place is on a busy 4 track main line, it once had a station but doesn't anymore, if it did trains that stop would only go on one route even though trains that pass through can go as far as scotland, it is a village rather than a town and it is the first station out on its main line that has closed but not been replaced by another on the same or a similar site, oh and this place is also electrified. and once had a castle.

I have made it reasonably easy but I doubt that many would get the answer

Bourne End?

Bourne End is correct!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I found a 1969 Western Region timetable last night, and was interested to see that in the rush hour, trains to Bourne End still went through to High Wycombe, even at that late date. The service during the day was the same as now, an hourly DMU (bubble car I presume) going through to Marlow. In the peaks it changed to being through trains from Paddington or Maidenhead to High Wycombe, with the bubble car shuttingly between Bourne End and Marlow.

isn't this the wrong way round?

Not the last time I was there. It is a most curious arrangement, whereby the old northbound platform leads only to the Marlow branch. Trains going Maidenhead > Bourne End > Marlow use the old southbound platform in both directions. The other platform is only used in the peaks when the service becomes a through Paddington > Bourne End service, with the branch DMU shuttling between Bourne End and Marlow.

Looking at it on Bing maps would suggest the brach is only accessible from the northbound platform. I think Waddon has it right.

Well, it took a few clues TBF! I wouldn't have had a chance otherwise.

I am town with 2 stations, the main one being on a loop off the main line with a large overall roof. The other station doesn't bear the town's name, but is of major historical significance.
