I want to create a simple two-track loop with a couple of sidings and a station or two.... I don't have much room for a model railway so N is my only option..... what's the minimum board width I'd need? (Thinking of wall mounting the whole thing).
Agreed.
I started one last year 3 feet by 7 feet and it seems enormous though I can almost manage 'real' radii on the curves. If yours will be level, then 2 feet by 6 or whatever you can manage should give a lot of scope.
I have gradients on the curves (grade separated figure of 8) so the extra space makes that work.
