As for favourite bands? In order: Eagles (by a mile), Led Zepp, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, The Who, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple, The Jam.

Favourite musicians? Neil Peart, Joe Walsh, John Entwistle, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson.

To be fair I did put him in as a last minute inclusion! I am not his number one fan but there are some pretty good songs he did (Layla in particular).

His main asset (thats unfair really) is that he is an absolutely amazing guitarist. In fact, absolutely amazing is probably underselling him.

The thing with guitarists like Eric Clapton or Mark Knopfler, is that because of how good they are, it doesnt look like they are putting the effort in. Its literally effortless. So its sometimes diffcult to tell how good they are.
They dont show off either

i used to like indie rock, sort of the killers and stuff, but i slowly slipped into stuff like iron maiden and now i really enjoy avenged sevenfold and the like, heavy technical metal. it probably got 'worse*' (or so my drum teacher would say!) as i got better at drums; although ronnie vannucci of the killers is still one of my favourite drummers.

*(however my favourite ever song is now 'jump' by van halen, which chuffed my teacher no end!)

Ears still ringing as I type this after wednesday's show in Newcastle

Far and away the best show i've ever seen and i've seen some good ones (including Rush, Aerosmith, Guns + Roses, Faith no More, Janes addiction etc etc), absolutely spine tingling from start to finish, Rammstein must be the best gig in the world at the moment!

Back on topic, rock music first and foremost from metal to AOR but i'll happily listen to anything from pop to jazz via rap and country.

Just don't make me listen to Umbrella, ella ,ella ever again............

I have some very strong musical convictions but basically I like anything that was made between 1953 and 1981, I do not like pop at all! I cant stand stuff like Abba and the whole Disco genre. I only have two exceptions to that rule though, Video killed the radio star and Funky Town.

I used to be a bit of metal fan until a couple of years ago when my music tastes have veered towards Punk and Pyschobilly.
Its a shame that Punk didn't succeed in wiping sugar coated crap pop off the face off the earth, otherwise crap like Scissor Sisters would never of existed.

Scissor Sisters are pretty good IMO (and usually my taste is heavier/obscure)

Plus you'd never wipe out any genre of music, if everything was punk it would be pretty boring...

I like a variety of music, depends on my mood, but mostly guitar bands or soloists, but it must preferably have some melodic content. I don't like anything that slavishly follows a formula such that all or most of their songs sound more or less identical. So, forget the likes of Motorhead & other thrash metal bands - they won't be on my list. Chances are that some of you will never have heard of some of my favourites, many are ignored or slagged-off by so-called experts, but others are quite well known.

So, just a few typical names:
Prog Rock:
Earth & Fire (Dutch band, early 1970's)
Rare Earth (soul-influenced prog rock)
Yes, (early) Genesis, Moody Blues, Barclay James Harvest, Kansas.

Classic Rock:
Doors, Rolling Stones, Who, Tom Petty, Oasis, Styx, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Three Dog Night.

Psychedelic era:
Jefferson Airplane, Blue Cheer, Seeds, Mouse and the traps, Quicksilver Messenger Service.

A bit louder:
Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin, Rush.

Country / Folk influenced rock:
Eagles, Byrds, Poco, Green On Red.

Also;
Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen.

Punk, boring, never! Pop punk, yes!
For me punk hits the nail on the head for lyrics, perhaps not so much for melody.
Punk isnt constantly going on about love and relationships. I mean the Ramones sang about the Blitzkrieg gate crashing a pogo party, (or that's at least would a presume it to be about).

A lot of the clashes songs still ring true today.
Punk certainly has far more meaningful lyrics than any love songs.
