Does Southampton Central count? It has a 'P5' but it's now just a parking bay.
And Bournemouth? The bay is effectively out-of-use.

Brockenhurst is not included as P4 is unidirectional as is P3 I think...Down only.
Totton has two bi-di platforms but the Down platform would only see passenger services under special authorisation as the signalling on the Test causeway and at Redbridge are freight-only. That also goes for Redbridge!

We seem to have threads for every other type of station so we may aswell chew this one over.

Basically we are looking for non-terminus stations which have more than one platform, where every platform can have passenger services leaving in either direction (not neccesarily in normal service, but always controlled by signals)

So to clarify, non terminus means not Euston or Thurso etc?
Bay platforms obviously count??

(not neccesarily in normal service, but always controlled by signals) means any platform with any sort of signal controlling the exit then?

apologies for seeming slow...

Nottingham certainly has a bay; without checking, I thought Cardiff did too.

The original post ("where every platform can have passenger services leaving in either direction") certainly seems to exclude stations with bays. I'm slightly puzzled by the subsequent reference to passenger trains "not necessarily in normal service". Does that mean that platforms with only a shunt route available in one direction (so not normally available to passenger trains) would qualify? That'd certainly increase the number of contenders: Nottingham would be a good example (P6!) if it weren't for the bay.

You need a station which is completely bi-directional. Every platform

I'll claim Leicester though, as I put it on page 1. It's equal platform numbers to Newport (also me on page 1). Cardiff is difficult, not sure if every platform has the shunts required, such as from Plat 7 towards Queen St for example. It would be easier to just include fully signalled ones that passenger services can use both ways, otherwise you're going to need very close knowledge of the signalling and layouts.

Leicester is still looking good then.

How does Motherwell fare, certainly just 4 through platforms but whether they can be used bi direcitonally...

No, cant get in the Up direction off the down main..

Do you have to be able to get to every track from the platform to make it bi-directional? I always thought it was just that trains can travel in both directions :?

Meadowhall? Or are there limits on certain platforms there?

Is there a 5?

Others that could work as 4 include Leyland, Selhurst, Thornton Heath etc...

Thorton Heath isn't bi-di AFAIK. Now, Meadowhall isn't I don't think, but if it is, would you include the trams?

Nope - Only the platforms on the loops are at Intl, and p1 isn't at Cov

All platforms at coventry are bi-directional and i think the platforms at international are.

Just to confirm, only one platform line at Meadowhall is reversible.

No one has said Westbury? And I think Newbury too :/ something like this occurs at Theale sometimes... I cant believe no one mentioned Reading!

Newbury has a bay on the up side which is used hourly for a terminating service to and from Reading.

Finsbury Park has been used for terminating trains hasn't it, but whether that means that the platforms can all be used bi directional or not I do not know.

If I have missed that in a post earlier like I did with Leicester then sorry.

My problem is knowing which stations are signalled in which way, because ones I think might have flexibility do not seem to. The only one I am certain of is that East Midlands Parkway does not count.

Geordie back from exile.
I'll open with Dunbar. Only one platform though, hope that counts. :p

Edit: I see it's multi-platformed stations in the OP so I withdraw Dunbar.

lancaster isn't, all stations that are 2 plats (Diss, Stowmarket, kelvedon etc) on the GEML are bi-di, mas is Chippenham, Bath (?) and Swindon :D

Quite a few in the ECML are as well (at least officially, perhaps not in practice) because of bi-di signalling. Durham (I think), Chester-le-Street (definitely), Manors (if anything still stops there), Cramlington (definitely), Morpeth (the sidings don't count), Pegswood (definitely), Widdrington (definitely), Acklington (definitely), Alnmouth (definitely) and Berwick (I think). Not sure about Musselburgh, Wallyford, Prestonpans, Longniddry and Drem, but they're all candidates as well.

Doesn't Swindon have a west-facing bay?

Cov: 1 is only signalled up, and Bhm Intl: 3 is down and 4 is up only, 1,2 & % are bi-di :D

At coventry platform 1 is bi-directional as the Nuneaton shuttle can depart from there

Not a terminus station...so not Euston, Thurso, etc.

Capable of leaving in either direction....so bays are out because you can only leave one way. A couple of interesting points about trains departing both ways, but not being able to arrive both ways. For clarity, they only need to DEPART both ways.

It needs to be a departure which is allowed using signals.

Basically we are looking for stations that have more than one platform, where train services, not neccessarily timetabled, can depart in either direction from every platform, thus services using 'Simbids' are allowed. Shunt moves are not permitted, but permissive working is.

Is it a requirement that a train can depart in either direction irrespective of which direction it arrived in? That'd certainly rule out one or two, including the SIMBIDS examples if I'm not mistaken, where reversals wouldn't be possible.

I'm not 100% sure how this fits in, but how about Ebbsfleet international? 6 platforms, no bays, TVM430...
