What about the VP185 re-engined power cars, understood they were possibly even better than MTU in terms of fuel consumption, anyone have any data to prove/disprove this?
To quote what EMT’s HST Fleet Engineer wrote in an article in the 125 Group’s magazine:
At full load the VP185 fuel consumption is slightly better than the MTU, and the improvements at the lower loads given by the electronic fuel injection on the MTU are small numbers.
43076 was experimentally modified with electronic fuel injection on its VP185, so this power car is probably more fuel efficient than the MTU, rather than being on a par.

Yes, the working assumption when the business case was put together was around a 8-10 year life extension. The payback was reasonable considering the Valenta was 18/36 months for half/full life overhaul. The MTU is around 30/60 months and VP185 36/72 months for the same. Quite a saving, even given the use of MTU for overhauls and the associated costs (but you get the OEM warranty).

Not a huge difference, I don’t think. I haven’t got the figures to hand, but there was no change to the van area loading limit as a result - the only change for this was due to Brush cooler group installation.

One of the disadvantages of the Brush Type 2 re-engining was an increase in weight of about 4 tons, partly compensated by an increase in power.

But, like the MTU HSTs, the EE powered Brush Type 2s needed fewer overhauls: classified repairs about every 4 years instead of every 2½ years, and two intermediates between each general instead of one. There was a big saving on engine spare parts too, with nearly everything common with the EE type 3s. Later on the longevity of the class 37s was assisted by being able to use engine parts from withdrawn class 31s.

And I didn't know that the MTU HSTs had a new cooler group. The cooler group was not changed in the Brush Type 2s and the EE engines pushed it up to (and in some circumstances over) the limit of its capability.

All the HST power cars got new cooler groups: Brush for MML/EMT, East Coast, XC, NMT and Grand Central, Voith for FGW.

They aren't UK loco's, but they were built in the UK, ran in a part of the the UK, and one is preserved in the UK.

The CIE A class.......

A3R & A39R at Downpatrick? And the related, but smaller C/201 class applies here as well, which ran with NIR (as the 104 class) until 1995 after IÉ withdrew their last examples in 1986/1987.
