Yes, the working assumption when the business case was put together was around a 8-10 year life extension. The payback was reasonable considering the Valenta was 18/36 months for half/full life overhaul. The MTU is around 30/60 months and VP185 36/72 months for the same. Quite a saving, even given the use of MTU for overhauls and the associated costs (but you get the OEM warranty).
Not a huge difference, I don’t think. I haven’t got the figures to hand, but there was no change to the van area loading limit as a result - the only change for this was due to Brush cooler group installation.

One of the disadvantages of the Brush Type 2 re-engining was an increase in weight of about 4 tons, partly compensated by an increase in power.
But, like the MTU HSTs, the EE powered Brush Type 2s needed fewer overhauls: classified repairs about every 4 years instead of every 2½ years, and two intermediates between each general instead of one. There was a big saving on engine spare parts too, with nearly everything common with the EE type 3s. Later on the longevity of the class 37s was assisted by being able to use engine parts from withdrawn class 31s.
And I didn't know that the MTU HSTs had a new cooler group. The cooler group was not changed in the Brush Type 2s and the EE engines pushed it up to (and in some circumstances over) the limit of its capability.
