Onboard checks will likely be targeting short faring these days as that appears to be the most common scam, rather than people having no ticket at all.
Suppose the passenger claims to be searching for their ticket how long will they wait? If the train is then arriving at a station and the passenger says it’s their destination will they be stopped from leaving the train?

In that case the revenue team (or at least a pair of inspectors) will try to alight the train with the passenger and allow them time to look for their ticket. But it's usually pretty clear if someone is trying it on.

They may move on to check others and come back, or wait (and as skyhigh says, alight with the passenger if they suddenly decide to get off - they won't hold the train). I think that after being in the job for more than about 15 seconds, they can tell when someone is genuinely searching for their ticket or doing a ticket dance.

It just sounds like you have had an issue with this and now have a bee in your bonnet. Maybe you have been caught out in some way?

As you said:

So you were on the train not stepping off the train. No issue at all with checking your ticket. They could also check as you are boarding a train.

Completely agree.

The only point I would raise is barriers are not always the solution. Often see in London people jumping them to avoid payment. The best way would be fully staffed stations with barriers.
Human 'barriers' were far less effective than what you have now.

Of course they could be more like a barrier than a gate...

At Abbey Wood, all day staffing and gates upon TFL takeover saw counted passengers rise something like 50 per cent.
Stephen Poole's book should be a fascinating read. He found that when a particular member of staff was on at Abbey Wood (probably in the 80s), the money paid in rose by rather a lot too.

And the overwhelming suspicion across the stations in that part of the world, was that the dishonesty of the travelling public was only slightly ahead of their own staff.

Back to normal now. Even London Bridge seems predominantly open at the moment
