More problems on WCML. (7/10)

Between 15 and 30 min delays out of Euston on VT services tonight. Incoming trains delayed by signal problems near Crewe. Not a great week for WCML

Track curcuit failure south of Stafford too this afternoon, but trains were being talked past signals in good fashion so the delay wasn't too bad.

Also issues between Motherwell and Glasgow Central, I think in the Newton area.
Southbound Scotrail's 1C52 18:39 Ayr to Edinburgh got stuck outside Motherwell for over an hour, with Virgin's 20:10 Glasgow Central to Crewe also over an hour late.

There have been a few incidents today affecting WCML traffic in Scotland

1. Points failure at Uddingston Junction after overnight works meaning all traffic diverted via Bellshill (hopefully fixed tonight)

2. Freight train got stuck for a while on the incline towards Bellshill (now fixed)

3. Points failure at Newton this evening (now fixed)

For an ignoramus, what's a "TCF"? Thanks.

I certainly noticed the odd running yesterday pm at Wolverton with the UP Fast being host to slow moving passenger trains, and with Voyagers & Pendolinos running on the UP Slow. Down traffic seemed more normal.

It stands for Track Circuit Failure generally used when a track circuit is showing occupied when it shouldnt. Its a bit of a misnomer really as the signalling is doing its job. ie its detected there is a problem and gone into its default state.

Should be track circuit showing occupied when clear (SOWC) or showing clear when occupied (SCWO) if you really wan't to get into semantics.

There is a 50 TSR north of the station on the up fast so that is why trains will be passing by slowly.

The reason trains were diverting on to the slow lines was due to S&T working on points at Ledburn Junction

Seems the wires have gone down again in the northern stretch of the WCML at Lockerbie.

Bad weeks for the WCML so far.

Just curious as then upgrade was done several years ago, were any works done for this part as this area seems quite prone to issues recently.

A failure is a failure, IMHO. Do you also object to the term "fail-safe" because if it fails safe, it hasn't really failed? The track circuit is not detecting trains. It is not doing its job. It HAS failed in a manner which is safe, but nevertheless it is still not operating as a track circuit. It has failed.

Some part of the circuit has failed, be it a relay, track side module, cable, IBJ, part of the rail.

There was a failure this morning as well, London-Manchester via Stoke trains were diverted via Stafford which added quite a bit on. I think it was something to do with signalling.

I notice that a train has broken down this morning, between Penrith and Oxenholme Lake District, causing a few trains to be delayed by over an hour. I don't know which train has broken down though.
