Hey Y'all
Today ive heard that its been confirmed that NXEA will be getting 188 additional carriages (i think thats right)... 120 new build carriages, to be built by bombardier and 68 refurbished carriages. (again, i think thats right but please correct me if im wrong)

Does anyone know:
- what the new builds will be?
- which company the refurbs are comming from?
- and what stock the refurbs will be?

Many Thanks :D

1. Electrostars
2. 321s
3. London Midland

Oddly, although it's all over the news, this isn't actually new...

Will they build a new maintainance facility to accomodate the new trains and are there any more stabling points for the extra 321s?

No. Clacton is supposed to be re-opening which will create around 100 new jobs. Full details here.

For those who can't be bothered wading through that lot, the headlines are as follows:

- 120 new Electrostar vehicles (30 4-car units) for the StanEx.
- StanEx Cl317's cascaded to other WA services.
- 68 vehicles cascaded from London Midland (17 Cl321's for the GE).
- Infrastructure improvements plus an order for trains from Bombardier Derby safeguarding British jobs elsewhere in the industry.

Another unit class for NXEA, it's like we're on a mission to see how many classes and sub-classes we can get :)

420-437.

Edit: Hang on, thats 18 units. Hmmm....!

Where are you getting those numbers from...?

Who for? WA or GE?

The "Bins" will be no different from those the GE already "sign". As for the new build units for the StanEx, this will take the traction card for a WA driver up from two classes to three. Given that there are TOC's and depots that "sign" considerably more classes, and even a mix of diesel and electric, I hardly consider this to be a major problem.

Besides, it's not the TOC that decides but the DfT. There are sound reasons for buying Electrostars over Desiro's at the present moment and, as the two classes will never inter-work, this won't be a problem operationally.

Are you thinking here of technical reasons, or of political ones? Not that I'm saying buying a british design, built in britain, is a bad thing, mind.

How come London Midland have 68 carriages spare to send to NXEA ? Can someone explain ? What this always part of a masterplan when LM received new carriages itself ?

London Midland are in the process of having 37 new class 350/2s delivered. As a result they're releasing some (perhaps all) of their 321/4s. Most are set to go to NXEA with some going to FCC.

Thanks.

When the order for the new LM 350/2s was placed, I hope the DfT did not put a spin on it and announce them as giving extra capacity. That clearly would not be the case if they were replacements for 321/4s going to NXEA. The public is very wary of the DfT double counting nowadays.

They are providing extra capacity, albeit for the network as a whole since the cascaded 321/4s aren't replacing anything. With 17 confirmed for NXEA, 5 confirmed for FCC and (in the short term) LM keeping 10, that leaves 5 still to be sorted.

Sorry Edvid, I am still a bit confused.

Clearly NXEA is getting extra capacity, no argument.

But with the new 350/2s arriving and the 321/4s departing are LM getting extra capacity ?

See my previous post again ;) (there were I think 37 321/4s with LM before the current cascade started)

Beyond the short term though, there are a few more EMUs (most likely new 350s) provisionally allocated to LM on top of 231-267 but as always this may change.

Political and economic.

Yes it is a political decision to award the contract to a company who will build these trains in the UK. It safeguards British jobs both directly and indirectly. Also, as the value of the Euro has risen against the Pound, Desiro's have become more expensive in real terms.

This is the bit which wont go down too well, although the fall out/comments/lack of reality grasping in the Norfolk rags will once again be amusing

From "Express News"

68 additional refurbished Class 321 carriages
[...]
Provide additional capacity on services between Norwich and London

So is this right for 321s (obviously not right now but I mean is this how it will end up!):

0 London Midland
10 FCC
The rert (exc /9s) to NXEA

I thought Northern were interested in 1 or 2 units from LM to provide an exta service on the triangle.

Wrong. At present the plan is...

401-410 to FCC
411-420 remain with LM
421-437 to NXEA

I assume that's short term though untill the rest of the 350/2s arrive?
Currently all bar 401/403/404/432 remain in service with LM. There is strongly believed to be a further 350 order on the horizon which would replace 321411-420 and the 323 fleet, presumably around late 2010 if the tender is out nowish.

I was under the impression that LM had ordered 37 350/2s, which was a direct replacement for the 321s. I must have got confused though.

I heard something about NXEA wanting to use EMUs as part of the London - Norwich Intercity service.

Does anyone know anything about that?
